Surnames: Perry, Brown, Flower, Penney
My great-grandfather was Alfred James Perry b. 15 aug 1881 in Rodborough, Stroud, Glos. He is the son of James Perry b. abt 1858 in Rodborough and Caroline Brown b abt 1855 in Stroud, Glos.
James is the son of James Perry b. abt 1816 in Woodchester, Glos. and Jane ? b abt 1823 in Rodborough, Glos.
James' parents were Barnabas Perry b. abt 1778 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset and Jane Flower b. abt 1780 in Shepton Mallet.
Barnabas Perry b. abt 1789 m Elizabeth Penney.

This is the only information I have available on my Perry side of the family...if there is anyone who can help fill in blanks or continue the lineage...your help would be appreciated.

You may already be aware of some of this so forgive me for telling it please.

It is fairly straightforward to get back to about 1837 by using the Office for National Statistics' birth, marriage and death indices at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl to find the necessary district and reference numbers (Registration District, Volume and Page) then go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ to order cert's on line. Freebmd is not yet complete so beware.

This really is the only way to procede if you would like to be sure of your facts and not have to use the dreaded, "abt" which is a euphamism for a guess and may even apply to the location! One cannot rely on anything other than source documentation such as cert's and church records but even those can be inaccurate sometimes. If anybody tells you anything, ask them for the data's source and a copy if they have it.

It might be a good idea for you to visit the Genuki site at http://www.genuki.org.uk/ where you will find a wealth of useful information, advice and links.

Regards

Geoff

We are aware of the Genuki and free bmd locations, but have hit a bunch of brick walls, so we are just seeing if any one else is researching the same line. What brought you to my message board posting...do you have any Perrys in Rodborough, Stroud or Shepton Mallet Gloucester and Somerset? If you do please write back. Thank you for responding to my posting I look forward to your next message.

Janice,

I read the GLS board now and then and have only just read you last. Sorry about the delay.

My gr grandfather Nathaniel Pinegar married an Eliza Perry of Kingswood on 1 Aug 1863. Her father was William - a weaver - deceased.

Nathaniel Pinegar of Kingswood - a widower - married an Ann Spencer of Wotton Under Edge in August 1868. I have not bothered to get the d-cert for Eliza who died in the March qtr of 1868 (freebmd).

Both marriages took place in the Independent Chapel in Kingswood in the district of Dursley.

In the 1871 census of Kingswood in a cottage named, "Muncom Thorns" on the census (actually Monk in Thorns), on the road between Charfield Green and Kingswood, is shown Nathaniel's family which includes Mary Ann 5 years old. I have not bothered to follow that twig but I confidently expect Mary Ann to be the daughter of Eliza nee Perry.

Regards

Geoff

Janice,

I've had a look at the 1851 census of Kingswood - Charfield Road - and there was a Perry family there :-

Mary Perry: Head: W: 60: Handloom weaver:Somerset Letton(sic).
Elizabeth Do: Daur:U: 25: Power loom weaver: Wilts Chippenham
Benjamin Do: Son: U: 23 Cordwaina(sic): Do Do
John Do: Son: U: 20: Handloom weaver: Gloster Nailsworth
Eliza Do: Daur: U: 18:........................: Do Kingswood.

There's no such SOM place as Letton but there is Leighton which would be phonetically nigh on the same spoken with a GLS accent to GLS ears!

Looking at the SOM Leighton on www.old-maps.co.uk shows an M.S. giving Frome 6 miles and Shepton Mallet 5. I reckon that's where Mary came from but what was her maiden name? There's the rub!

Wish your husband all the best.

Geoff

Janice.

Using Google Earth I found Litton SOM about 7 miles north(ish) of Shepton Mallett (SM)

Neither the Litton nor the SM C of E data has been extracted and placed in an LDS batch according to the procedure at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/FindingBatchNos.html so any PERRY data purporting to be from Litton (e.g. a submitted entry in the IGI) is not to be accepted without checking LDS film number 1470871 which covers Litton and 17 more Somerset villages' parish church records. There's quite a few LDS films of the churches in SM to be checked as well.

Geoff

Thank you so much again Geoff for the continual information. I have forwarded your information to my mother and she may add more information necessary to our search once she reads the message board, and she probably has the information to answer your questions readily accessible. I will also take all your information into consideration as soon as I return home. By the way, my mom's name is Hazel....you have both of us on cloud nine with this new information. Talk to you soon
Best regards-Janice

You might want to check out the Perry entries on the Gloucestershire Genealogical database.

THere are several for Rodborough, and I also noticed a 'Barnaby' Perry. (Overseers Record).

http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleID=1335

Copies of items can be ordered from the Glos Record OFfice.

Good luck
Sonia

Thanks for the information Sonia, I will have to check it out. Are you related to the Rodborough Perrys? Let me know if you have anything else, it would be nice to get Perry information before the 1800s. Take care and thanks again.
