Chantlers in Ontario

Hello Dianne and other friends....

I have some information on your (and my)ancestors. I have collected this from other relatives who have done the research over the years. Principally another relative, Betty Gillespie (nee Chantler).

Betty's research lists 8 children of James George Chantler and Elizabeth Rogers:

Milton G. (1871-1929)
Lavinia (1873-1873)
Amy Ethel (1875-1948)
Laura Evelyn (1881-1934)
Mina (1882-1973)
William Orval (1888-1951)
Isaac Otto (1890-1976)
Winfred J. (?)

I found it quite remarkable that although James and Elizabeth were both born in 1845, they had children in 1888 and 1890, i.e. at age 43 and 45!

James George's parents were William Nathaniel, born October 14, 1813 at Abinger Mill, parish of Abinger, county Surrey (died May 15, 1904) and Margaret Booker, born June 6, 18?? (died Feb 1, 1907). They were married in Canada in 1839. William Nathaniel and Margaret settled in Newton Robinson where they built a home and general store (still there -
currently an antique store) and cleared the land for farming as well. There are interesting records in the Ontario archives census' about the number of acres they cleared, how many pigs, horses, chickens etc. they had. Theses people were true pioneers, homesteading in Newton Robinson.

William Nathaniel is my great, great, great grandfather. The emigration to Canada was really the work of his father and uncle, Moses (Nov. 7,1793 - Oct. 9, 1873) and Nathaniel (June 22, 1780 - July 15, 1832). The family were Quakers, and suffering from persecution in England. Moses is William Nathaniel's father. (there are 2 Nathaniels to this point).
William Nathaniel was the oldest of five sons and six daughters fathered by Moses and his wife Sarah ?.

Moses' brother Nathaniel died during the trip to Canada from cholera, as the family was coming down the St. Lawrence river. There was a cholera epidemic at that time. It also claimed the life of Moses' daughter Ann, who had just turned nine. Later Nathaniel's wife would also die from cholera (after she had stopped in York) leaving their 5 children as
orphans.

Our ancestor, William Nathaniel, Moses' son was not killed in the cholera epedemic and went on to found our lines.

Here's how we are related (all Chantlers):
