My grandfather's brother was named Godfrey. Apparently his family had migrated from Pennsylvania to Arlington, Ohio. My grandfather's brother may have been named after the Godfrey you are looking for. The original Crates in my tree was named Christian and migrated from Germany to Pennsylvania. Unfortunately that's all I have right now.

Christina,

Good news! My father just told me that his great grandfather was Godfrey Crates who had three sons Daniel, Henry and John. Daniel is my greatgrandfather who was from Hancock county. I was also told that the Crates in this tree had migrated from Pennsylvania. Let me know if this fits. The dates work as my grandfather was born in Ohio in 1904 to Daniel G. Crates and Etta Baime(spelling).

My grandfather's brother was indeed named after his grandfather also named Godfrey. Daniel G. Crates was married to an Swiss woman named Etta but I'm unsure of her last name. Daniel was one John Wesley Crates's brothers. He had seven children with Etta, Robert Henry, Daniel E., Paul, James, Godfrey, Lydia, and Frances.

I made an effort to get more information on Christain's family in Germany. I found a family that had similar names to the ones in ours, but there is a Gap between what could be Christain's grandfather and Christian.

Christina,

I got the news on Christian from a newspaper article about his burial monument. I would be happy to send you a copy.
