Does anyone know if there are records on seamen form the 1800's? I would like to find records on some of my ancestors. William Coverdale was born in 1814. His daughter, Sarah Coverdale married Chritiaan Jansfen in 1868.
Would there be records if this men died or were losted at
sea?

You could try Trinity House records which might show money being given to their Widows. I can't remember whether I found the records through Ancestry or some other source.

Also try looking in the newspapers of the time. Possibly available via your local library.

Thanks for the information.
My William was married to Ann, but they did have a son born abt 1838. I hate to seem a dullard, but what is the GRO index, and is it available online?
Thanks again, Rick

"GRO Index" is the index to the civil registration records of Births Marriages and Deaths which started in 1837.
You can see the records which have so far been indexed online using "FreeBMD" which any search engine will find for you.

Surnames: JANSFEN , PRATT
The marriage of Christian JANSFEN in Q4 1868 S. Shields - looking at the other names on the page - the only Sarah is Sarah PRATT.
However all is explained by the marriage in Q1 1861 S. Shields 10a 534 of Sarah Coverdale and one of the possible grooms is Isaac PRATT.

So somewhen between 1861 and 1868 there is likely to be a death of Isaac and the 1871 census may well show Sarah having children called PRATT.
