We are seeking descendants of Matthew Naughton and wife Mary Elliott of County Roscommon, Ireland. Little is known of this line of Nortons in Ireland, however, we do have these baptismal records:

The Baptismal Registers for the Roman Catholic Parish of
St. Peter's Athlone, County Roscommon, Ireland from 1810 to 1816:

Baptised on 7th June 1810, James, the son of Mathew Naughton and Mary Elliot. William Elliott and Margaret Kelly stood as James's sponsors.

Baptised on 6th November 1812, Thomas, the son of Mathew Naughton and Mary Elliott. Joan Bannon and Mary Dolan stood as Thomas's sponsors.

The following information were the records of James M. Naughton (Norton_ Bap: 7 June 1810) and his wife Anne Dolan:

Baptised on 23rd November 1834, Mathew, the son of James Naughton and Anne Dolan. Patrick and Mary Dolan stood as Mathew's sponsors.

Baptised on 3rd February 1839, Mary daughter of James Norton and Anne Dolan of Ballymullavill. Mary Norton stood as Mary's sponsor.

Baptised on 9th November 1846, James, the son of James Naughton and Anne Dolan. John and Rose Naughton stood as James's sponsor.

There was another daughter Rosanne borne to James Norton and Anne Dolan, however, we can't find her record.

We like to find the descendants of Mathew Naughton and Mary Elliott's son Thomas Naughton born in 1812, County Roscommon, Ireland. Any information on the names mentioned in the baptismal records would be great.

We have had our Norton line throughly researched in Ireland ....there are no more places to search. So, now we are hoping descendants of our Naughton/Norton.....Dolan, Kelly and Elliot lines can tell us more about our ancestors.

We can trace our Norton line in America and will share that information with descendants of James M. Norton and Anne Dolan. They lived in Columbus County, New York and Knox County, Illinois.

Thank you,
Mary Boudeau

I have both the Naughton and Dolan Surnames in my family tree. I am searching for my Naughton ancestors, but have not been able to establish exactly where they are from in Ireland. I have the same family names of Thomas, James, Matthew, and Mary Naughton that all settled in Broome County, NY between 1880 and 1920. Do you have any more info on your Thomas Norton (1812) brother to your James M. Norton (1810)? He would be the right age for the one that I am researching. My direct ancestor is Richard Naughton (1856-1916), son of Thomas Naughton and Mary Grady. Richard had a brother James (1862-1939) who married Bridget (Unknown) and named his first son Matthew. Both Richard and James also had daughters named Mary. Also, a daughter of my James Naughton married a Robert Dolan. I could not find a Columbus County, NY but found a Columbus, NY in Chenango County that is very close to where my ancestors lived. Do you have any of these names in your NY Naughtons?

Laura, thank you for replying to my Naughton query. I miss posted, when I put down Columbus County, New York; it was Columbia County. I have a requester who lives in Columbus, Ohio.

James Norton and his family arrived in America at the New York port of entry in 1848 according to some records, however, his oldest son Mathew’s declaration documents said it was July 3, 1850 when they arrived in America. So the Norton family arrival to this country is in a little dispute. However, we believe James was 36 and his wife Ann was 35 when they first stepped on to the shores of America with four children. At some time they changed their name from Naughton to Norton.

In the first years in America, my Norton line lived in Lebanon Springs, Columbia County, New York and worked for Shakers. James Norton family are listed on the Columbia County, New York census. In the late 1850s, they moved to Henerson Township, Knox County, Illinois, near Galesburg, where they bought a farm.

James Norton and family were listed on the 1860 Knox County, Illinois census and his son Mathew Norton filed for his Naturalization papers, in 1858. So, your Naughtons came to America much later than my did.

It would be great if we could make the connection and be cousins.
And with the Naughton and Dolan connection it very well could be.

Let me know how your Naughton research goes......

Mary

James M. Norton (Naughton), his wife Anne Dolan and family lived in Lebanon Springs, Columbia County, New York, not Columbus County, New York

Also, they were listed on the 1850 Columbia County, New York Census.

My name is Michael NAUGHTON. I come from a family of 3 brother and two sisters. My father Joseph NAUGHTON originates from Roscommon. I am aware that I still have an uncle in Roscommon, again Michael NAUGHTON. My sister Margaret lives in Athlone.
I recall that my dad comes from "Kiltoom" ( well it sounds something like that).
Perhaps you can contact me.

Hi Michael, I descend from the eldest James Naughton, son of Mathew Naughton and Mary Elliott.

The information, I have on my Naughton line in Roscommon is pretty much all I have of them in Ireland. The researcher really couldn't find any more than the baptismal records. We have been hoping that a descendant of Mathew Naughton's son Thomas would find the query.

We would love to learn what townland that our Naughton line comes from. We do know that it starts with "C," but really couldn't make out anyother letters as the print faded.

When James Naughton and his wife Ann Dolon came to America in the late 1840s, their last name became Norton. We have several years for their arrival. We can trace James Norton from Lebanon Springs, New York to Galesburg, Illinois and his son James C. Norton to DeWitt and Crete, Nebraska.

Can you tell me about your Naughton line? We would love to learn more about Roscommon, also.

Mary

I am trying to locate Joseph Naughton who was born in Co. Roscommon between 1927-33 and emigrated to the United States afterwards. He served in the Korean War and later settled in San Francisco, where in 1963 he was active in the local Irish Club. At that time he was working as a carpenter but studying to become a teacher. Our family lost contact at that point.

I am also looking for a Joseph Naughton born in Roscommon who emigrated to San Francisco I think. Served in the Korean war, was a carpenter I think. Contact me if you think this is the same person.

Thanks

Hello Mary
My Great Grandmother was Sarah Naughton who married Thomas Lennon, Co. Roscommon, Athlone, Ireland. I believe they lived in the Drum/Athlone Area. Their son Edward Joseph Lennon migrated to Australia and he was born in Athlone in 1878.
So that puts Sarah and Thomas's birthdays around 1840's or 50's? It is quite possible that Sarah is also one of James & Anne Naughton's children or perhaps from Thomas?
I am sorry, I know nothing further about Sarah. Can you see any connection?

Hello Peter,

Mathew Naughton's son James, who I descend from, didn't have any daughters named Sarah. James lived in New York and then settled in Knox County, Illinois.

We do not know anything about Mathew Naughton's son Thomas, except his baptismal record We are hoping to hear from his descendants.

Good luck in your search,

Mary
