In the last part, I meant to say that I couldn't find Mary or Richard in the 1841 Census. This could be because the parish name is different. I did find on Richard who's parents were Thomas & Jane, can't confirm it's him.

Dear David, Your James had a sister called Frances Mary who married (as his second wife) John Naylor Warwick, a brewer from Boroughbridge. They had two daughters, Emily and Julia. Julia was my great grandmother. Having spent many years researching the family I have collected a large amount of documentation and if I can help further I am happy to do so. Best wishes, Jane Moubray.

Hi all,

Just looked on a map and it seems to me that Boroughbridge and Hovingham/ Coulton don't appear to be that far away - certainly within 15-20 miles... or a good day's walk!

Has your research pulled up any connection? Through the Census the last person I've managed to trace on my side is Thomas Ridsdale b. 1795 (Coulton) d. 1871 (Hovingham)

This is the earliest Ridsdale I've found that I can directly trace from available census material that my side of the family is related to - although I'd be very interested to hear from any earlier references if you have them!

Thomas Ridsdale was the son of Richard Ridsdale & Grace Pape.

Thomas was baptised at Hovingham on 4 Oct 1795, Coulton being too small to have a church. The parish register reads: Thomas, son of Richard Ridsdale of Coulton.

In Baines' 1823 directory, Thomas is listed as a saddler. He must have taught his trade to Richard, his son, who followed in his footsteps.

Richard Ridsdale, his father, was born circa 1768 at Thornton-le-Street, according to the 1851 census. By 1840 he was farming at Flower of May farm at Husthwaite, where he died on 13 Feb 1858.

Grace Pape was baptised at Gilling on 28 Sep 1766, the daughter of Edward Pape and Ann Nowleson. The Papes can be traced back to the late 1500's at Gilling.

Grace & Richard were married there on 20 May 1786 and had 8 known children. Grace died on 09 Nov 1816, she and Richard are buried in Gilling churchyard.

Dear David, the "James" with a sister called Frances Mary was born in 1816. Framces Mary was born in 1820 and married John Naylor Warwick of Boroughbridge in Ripon Cathedral in January 1850. I may have confused you in the earlier message. Jane.

James born 1866 is my great father he is the father of my grandfather Richard Burton Ridsdale born in Bishop Thornton in 1890. Sadly James was the black sheep of the family. He married Jane and they had four children, Richard, Harry, Mary and Annie. James and Jane both died in Halifax. Richard died in 1983.
