Looking for parents of William Polk, b circa 1786 maybe in Davidson , TN, married Susanna Gamble 1808, died either in Rutherford Co., TN or maybe Sabrine Parish, LA. Had daughter Elizabeth who married Alfred Neal. Family legend has William kin to Pres. Polk.

In reply to your posting: I am a descendant of William Polk (1775-1844), who married Susanna Gambill (1790-c1871)in Rutherford County, TN, April 14, 1808. William Polk died in Sabine Parish, LA, on January 27, 1844. If Susanna was with William in LA, at the time of his death, she moved back to Memphis, TN, where they lived before they moved west. Susanna died in 1871 or later in Memphis. William's son Bradley Kimbro Polk (1815-1857) was my gr-gr-grandfather. He lived in Ouachita County, AR (in southwest AR) from the Fall of 1844, until his death on November 22, 1857.

Even though I have found information to the contrary, ie., United Ancestries CD #100, I think, that there is little doubt, that the father of William Polk (1775-1844)was the John Polk who lived in Burke County, NC, from December, 1778 until some time in 1796. However I have not yet successfully connected him to the other Polks in NC or SC. Even though there are some clues.

I hope this has been some help. I would like to hear what you think.

I found your message as referenced in the subject line and wanted to respond concerning the tombstone of Joseph Lee Polk.

Joseph Lee Polk's tombstone has no information other than his name (no dates or other information), just "JOSEPH LEE POLK". A footstone bears the following initials, "J. L. J.". His approximate date of birth came from census records, and his date of death from papers left in the family of a descendant.

His tombstone is next to that of his wife, Hannah Lemaster and reads, "In memory of Hannah, wife of Joseph Polk Daughter of Josehp Mary Lamaster, born March 26th 1795 died Sept. 1st 1853 (Note: The spelling of Joseph Lemaster's name appears above as it does on Hannah's tombstone.)

Their tombstones are located near that of a grandson (son of William and Susan Bridgeforth Polk). It reads, "In memory of W.J.B. Son of W. and S. J. Polk born July the 21st, 1849 died August the 5th 1853." [Footstone: "W.J.B.P."]

All three tombstones are located in the cemetery next to Mt. Nebo Methodist Church on Brown Hollow Road off Williamsport Pike, west of Columbia TN. I visited this cemetery and took photos of these tombstones in the summer of 1990.

It was great to see your name associated with Polk family research again. Although I haven't been doing Polk research, I look online occasionally to see what I can find.

We moved to CO last year.

Diane, thanks for replying. I it has been some time since I have heard from you. As you can see I'm still looking for Polks.

The Joseph Lee Polk tombstone data that I got about him being born in Mecklenburg, NC, was sent to me by a descendant of Joseph Lee Polk less than a week ago. He said that "I found his grave marker and it is still in pretty good condition have been put up in 1868. The incription reads: Joseph Lee Polk born Mecklenburg NC 1788 died 1868. It also has the month and day of birth and death but was hard to read." He goes on to tell about Hannah Polk's stone "loving wife of Joseph Lee Polk." What do you make of this? It seems almost impossible that there would be two graves for Joseph Lee Polk and his wife Hannah! I have known for years where Joseph was buried, but knew nothing about the wording, if any, on his tombstone. And, I,of course, have never been there.

Let me know what you think of this.

John,
I don't know what to make of that, unless they were talking about another Joseph Polk tombstone in another cemetery. I have photos of both the Joseph Lee Polk tombstone and the Hannah Lemaster Polk tombstone in Mt. Nebo Cemetery which is adjacent to Mt. Nebo Methodist Church on Brown Hollow Road off the Columbia-Williamsport Pike, west of Columbia. The only other Polk I could find was that of a grandson, buried near the tombstones of Joseph and Hannah, which were adjacent to one another.
Someone recently sent me notice of the following tombstone (completely new to me):
Joseph L. Polk born Aug. 20, 1816 died June 22, 1854. This one is supposed to be located in the same Polk cemetery that contains the graves of Richard Polk (1777-1837) and his son William R. M. Polk (1829-1846). It was said that this was Joseph Lemaster Polk, son of Joseph Lee and Hannah; but, Joseph Lemaster Polk's birthdate--fairly consistent on census records--was recorded as 1818/19, not to mention that he was enumerated on the 1880 Perry Co. TN census.
The Polk cemetery referred to above is also supposed to contain the stone of Louisa Polk (1812-1848).
Do you know who these people were?

In my family history, I have documented that Alfred Neal married Elizabeth Polk, Sep 16, 1829 in Bolivar, Tennessee and resided in Yell County, Arkansas. I would be interested in any information about Alfred Neal, as to his place of origin. My Mother, Hazel Frances Copeland Neal did a family history book (Descendants of Alfred Neal) which is in the U.S. Library of Congress. She was unable to get back beyond Alfred Neal, and had no information back beyond Elizabeth Polk. She thought that they were related to President Polk, but was not able to document it. Thanks.

My Great Aunt left me some information about my family tree. I am very "green" at researching genealogy and was wondering if you could confirm the information I have. My tree is as follows: Thomas Nathan Polk (1880-1940), William Polk Jr. (1843-?), Bradley K. Polk (1815-?), William Polk (1776-1843). Is there any way to aquire dates for William Jr. and Bradley K.? I have absolutely no information and have no idea where to look. I aslo can't seem to confirm the children and grandchildren of William (1776). I'm afraid the connection to William (1776) may be speculation. What I do know is that my family came from Tennesee to Texas. My doubt lies in speculation that Thomas Nathan is one of the two sons, "Tom and John" of William (1843) and Martha Polk.

Any light you can offer would be greatly appriciated.

Hi,

This is an update of this thread. I have been in contact with Diane Norton. Most of these names in this post are listed in our Hodge/Giles family Bible. The Bible is not in my possession, but I was given a copy of the information by a family member of my husband's mother's generation. The information in the Bible was written by Nancy Hodge GILES during the 1800's and I never could find out who the POLK and BOLEJACK names were in relation to the GILES family members. I put my head together with Diane and found that Richard POLK and ELIZABETH Martin LEMASTER were the grandparents of Sarah Hodge GILES. The others appear to be her Aunts and Uncles. The Joseph L. POLK b. 20 Aug 1816 is in the Bible along with about twelve other family members. If anyone wants information, write me at Nangotoo@aol.com.
