I am researching this family too. I am a descendant of Eliza Ann Hillary, born 23 Dec 1851 who immigrated to Sydney Australia around 1880. I also have some information on Mary, born 10 Dec 1839.
I am happy to swap and share information.
Hope to hear from you

Hi Jan,
I am researching this family for my friend in Western Australia, her ancestor was Frederick Hillary, brother to Eliza Ann.

How tragic that Eliza lost so many children.

I thought she must have left England when I couldn't find anything after 1871 census.

I would appreciate anything you can impart to me and if you are interested I can give you my freinds details so that you can make contact.

Cheers
Mary

Hello Mary,
Eliza Ann HILLARY is my g grandmother on my mothers side. I too have made contact with some of Frederick HILLARY's descendants who live in WA. Eliza was the seventh of the eight children born on 23 December 1851 to Richard HILLARY and Susan GIFFORD. My aunt remembers being told that Eliza arrived in Australia in 1880, but I am yet to find the shipping records. She apparently travelled alone and I would like to find out why she would have left England and travelled by herself to Australia. Anyway she married Joseph SIBLEY on 8 September 1882 in Sydney and they had nine children - 6 of them dying as babies. My grandmother was the youngest child. Eliza died on 31 July 1928 and is buried at Rookwood Cemetery with my grandmother Florence Kate SIBLEY.
I am happy to send you more information - perhaps it would be easier to email information. I have a photo of her grave and also a lovely photo of her - her daughter Beatrice was the spitting image of Eliza.
Any information that your friend might have about the HILLARY's or GIFFORD's would gratefully accepted.
My email address it five_hudsons@hotmail.com
Regards
Jan

Have you found a connection with my Hillary family?
My George and Elizabeth Hillary lived at North Wootton just outside Sherborne. George was born in Sherborne in 1812. Their children were Gerard (born c. 1835), Frederick, Louisa, Mary, Elizabeth (born c. 1847) and George. Elizabeth (daughter) went on to marry George Stacey, in Sherborne, and emigrated to Australia in 1884. They had a daughter Mary and son Hillary but 4 or 5 other children/babies had died.

Hi, I have come across the name George HILLARY born in 1812 and have wondered if he was the brother of Richard HILLARY born about 1814 in Nether Compton (which is close to Sherborne)but have not been able to prove the connection. Richard is the son of Lodwick HILLARY (born about 1777 in Nether Compton) and Frances READ. My difficulty is that I haven't been able to trace any parish birth records. Lodwick HILLARY and Frances READ married in Sherborne in April 1813 so perhaps George is not their son but is a cousin of Richard.
The name HILLARY is not that common in Dorset so I am sure that George and Richard are related in some way. But how? Have you been able to trace the names of George's parents?
Please let me know if you find out anything.
Regards,
Jan (Richard HILLARY is my gg grandfather)

Surnames: HILLARY Woodland Diment
I am a 2g-grandson of Mary Hillary(b.1843). She married John Woodland in Bedminster in 1870. They emigrated to Canada in 1879 with their only surviving child (of three) Frederick George Trevelyn Woodland (b. 1875, Sherborne Dist.).I have a record of nearly all of their descendants.
Mary's older sister Louisa(b. 1840) and her husband Edmund Diment (marr. 1863) emigrated to Canada in 1874. A brother Gerard George* (b. 1834) emigrated to Canada in 1868. Their parents, George and Elizabeth also emigrated to Canada between 1871 and 1881. What else would you like to know?
