Help researching Genealogy in the Black Country

If anyone is researching their family history in the Black Country Region then I would recommend taking a visit to BlackCountry Gob, the community forum for the Black Country.

Since the closure of Rowley Regis Online ( www.rowleyregis.com) Black Country Gob ( www.blackcountrygob.com) has taken it's place with most of the regular members from there moving over to BCG.

A vast amount of data is shortly to be uploaded to the site which may well help in your search.

I found a number of inaccuracies in that bc Tribal Pages. Seems to me it's a case of quantity, not quality, with information being entered by various people.

If anyone is thinking of taking information from there, I would recommend they check it all out at the archives before using it. As you should when using all information taken from other people's research.

Black Country Connections (http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/) is indeed a team effort with a lot of people adding information - that is the whole point of it really.

Naturally this can lead to errors but we have a clear policy on this matter. If anyone disagrees with some of the information on the site then they are welcome to contact the administrators and we will look into the matter.

Usually what we do is throw the topic open for discussion on http://www.genealogyforum.co.uk/forum/ and/or check the original data at the archives.

It works a little like Wikipedia - we rely on people pointing out the mistakes so they can be fixed but do not see our site as 100% reliable. The up-side of having so many contributors is that although there may be more errors entered there are also more people to spot them :-)

Occasionally there may be cases where there are two interpretations based on the same inconclusive data. When that happens we tend to let the first post stand and add a note pointing out the second possibility.

So, if you have spotted any mistakes please let us know so that we can look into them. We now have over 16000 entries on the site and I would them all to be correct if possible.

Kate (one of the administrators of Black Country Connections)

As an original member of RRO, I was sad to see it go but was pleased to also be an original member of Black Country Gob. Which apart from being able to help with Black Country History Family Research, also has forums covering Black Country Trades and Local History. The Black Country Gob Gallery is a marvellous collection of images of BlackCountry Folk and Buildings including many no longer standing.

Well known Black Country names, like Tibbetts, Hadley, Willetts, Rose, Parkes and many more besides can be found there.
