Augusta M. NORLING

Surnames: Bergman, Bergmarker, Hietala, Leste, Soderin, Norling
Augusta M. Norling married a Fred P. Bergmarker. They both immigrated from Sweden in the late 1800's and became naturalized between 1918 and 1919. I don't know if they were married before leaving Sweden, or if they met in the U.S. and married there or what. I know at some point they were in Illinois (Cook county) because their first sons (Fred E. Bergmarker, and Archie Bergmarker) were born there according to the 1920 census info. I would love any information anyone may have on this family or if you know where I could possibly get a lead. It would be greatly appreciated.

Hi..I was looking on the Ellis Island database and found two
entries for an Augusta Norlin. I wonder if either of these could
be your relative, with the last name misspelled (as could
easily happen at Ellis Island).

Augusta Norlin--Barsberg, Sweden--1912--Age 21

Augusta Norlin--Malnis--1892--Age 18

You might have to make a guess as to which might be your
relative by looking at their ages upon arrival.

Hope this helps in some way. Norling is not the easiest
name to research, especially when your search takes you immediately "across the pond" (my father was born in Sweden) and you don't speak the language and can't read
the Swedish genealogy websites. Good luck!

Hi,

THanks so much for the info. I will use it and see what I can find out. I know what you mean about "jumping the pond". That is kind of where I am stuck too with all my research thusfar. I guess I may just have to break down and learn Swedish. I am sure that is easy (NOT).

Thanks for the look up, I do really appreciate it very much.

I too am looking for NORLING family from IL. I am interested in your query because my ancestor, Charlotte M. Norling, had a daughter, Mary, with her husband John Rulius Peterson. This may be relevant because they lived in Mercer Co. IL around 1891. I have heard from family members that Charlotte MAY have come over from Sweden with her sister . . The sister's name I do not know, but interesting that the same name, same state, and near the same time . . .

Hello, I found your note very much of interest to me. The reason it is of such interest is because recently I have obtained a couple of birth certificates for the children of the August M. Norling and Fred P. Bergmarker union. This has really shed some light and confusion as to what her real last name was because on some of the birth certificates her maiden name is listed as NORLING, and then on other's it is listed as PETERSON!! This has me so confused. I am requesting the birth certificates of three other children they had together that were born in Cook county. Another note of interest, the last name of the father and baby on one of the birth certificates was listed as Bergmark. At some point in time, they added an -er to the name. And now for another twist, is that on the birth certificate of what I thought was her second child (at least in this union) this birth was listed as her sixth child. I know the older brother, but the other four before that are a huge mystery to me. Who knows, it may be the same person we are looking for. It is amazing how confusing this can get with what people did to names, trying to hide the past or whatever. It makes it hard for us who just have a paper trail to follow.

E-mail me and I can share more of what I do know. I have learned quite a bit more since my original post on this subject. I just find it very interesting that she had the last name Peterson at times, Norling at others. Yikes!
