I was wondering if anyone could help me? My father was from Dundee and worked on this ship in the Antarctica back in the early 1950's with mostly men from Norway. I have been looking for anyone that may have worked on this ship and remembers my Dad, Thomas Cook? He spoke of a friend "Chunky" and of a good friend Olof Kerkeberg(spelling?) from Tonsberg that he actually went home with to visit Olof's family. I think that Olof's father was a Mayor of their town.Anyone that knows these men or their families please contact me.Thank you so much. Also anyone with photos of this ship, please let me know.

Hello, I live near Tønsberg and can probably help you if you like.
I found 2 photoes of the Southern Venturer on the net.
Southern Venturer
Give me some time and I look into Olaf Kirkeberg. One of the whaling ships that followed the Venturer , "Southern Actor" is preserved as a museum ship in Sandefjord. There is also a" Salvesen Ex Whalers club" that might help you.
You could probably ask for help in the local newspaper http://www.tb.no/ Many of the readers are ex whalers.
Yours
Gunnar G

thank you so much for the information. I would be so grateful for anything you could turn up on this gentleman.
I have looked for a website for the ex-whalers group but haven;t had any luck finding it. Do you happen to have an address for them? Thank you so much for taking the time to help me.

Well I just came across this post of mine from quite some time ago. Thank you to the folks that replied and helped with info.
An update to this is that the son of Olav got in touch with me from another message board and actually sent me photos his father had taken while at the whaling...my Dad was in a few of them! His father always talked of his friend from Dundee, Tommy, Isn't that wonderful?! Unfortunately his father had passed away a few years before so it was a bit sad for my Dad. He would talk about the pictures and Olaf constantly for the next couple of years until his passing. It seems the bonds they made back them stayed with them for life xoxo
