Hi Cynndi,

I list Levi J. Hooker on the 1840 Virginia census as living in Pocahontas County before West Virginia was formed. He was living alone at this time. Levi is also listed on the 1850 Virginia census as living in Nicholas County, 43rd District. Nicholas County is also part of West Virginia. He is again living alone. There is no Levi J. Hooker listing on the 1860 Virginia census. This is a 30 year passage and it is doubtful that he had any wives or children. Hope this helps a little.

Warm regards,
Ernest (Ernie) Hooker

Henry A Hooker

Hi Cynndi,

Are you still seeking information on Levi J. Hooker? If so, I have the family members as recorded in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

Let me know and I will be happy to provide that information for you.

Hi Cynndi,

Previous information that you were given that Levi lived alone in 1840 and 1850 and probably never married or had children was erroneous. Here is what I've found as taken from the census images, but have not been able to locate him after the 1860 census. (His middle initial in the 1860 Census looks like a "P", but it may be just the style of writing.....)

1840 Census Pocahontas County, VA

Levi J. HOOKER Males 0-0-0-0-0-1(ages 20-30)-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 Females 1 (Under 5) -0-0-0-1(20-30)
-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0
Neighbors were: John Bruffee, senr., Isaac Hill, Richard Hill, George Hill, and Abraham Hill.

1850 Census, 43rd District, Nicholas County, VA, enumerated 23rd July, 1850 by D. O. Kelly, Stamped #346, Lines 9 through 15, HN/FN: 81-81.

Levi J. Hooker, 43, M, Farmer, 15.00, Connecticut,
Nancy Hooker, 37, F, VA
Urania Hooker, 10, F, VA
William C. Hooker, 8, M, VA
John Hooker, 6, M, VA
Mary Hooker, 4, F, VA
Edward Hooker, 4/12 months, M, VA
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1860 Census, Unnamed District, Nicholas County, VA, enumerated 5th July 1860, Page No. 55, Lines22 through 27,
HN/FN: 489-374.

Levi P. Hooker, 55, M, Farmer, 10,000 / 3,000, Conn.
Nancy Hooker, 40, F, Farmer Wife, VA
Chancy Hooker, 19, M, Farmer, 500/200, VA
John Hooker, 17, M, Daily Labor, VA
Elizabeth Hooker, 14, F, VA
Edward Hooker, 10, M, VA

The Hookers lived next door to Andrew H. McCoy and his neighbor and son, William H. McCoy (these are part of my McCoy family research).

I also found a land grant for Levi J. Hooker as follows:

LEVI J. HOOKER.
LOTW 22467.
SURVEY 26 Mar 1859.
Nicholas Co VA.
Area: 80 acres, on Brushy Fork of Mumblethepeg, joining lands of
WILLIAM HILL, HENRY W. POWELL (POWEL), and DUNBAR, beginning on the
first line of a 700-acre survey patented to PHILIP HAUL, at a stake
which is a corner to a 200-acre tract of land sold by PHILIP HAUL to
BAILS.
Land Grant 03 Jul 1860.
VA Grants 117, p. 163.

Hope this all helps!
Bea

Hi Bea it has been along time since I reviewed your message. These were my Hookers/Powells .
Henry W.Powell was my great ,great, grandfather he married Urania Hooker. In the 1860 census. She must be his wife,

My question is the 1850 or 1840 Does Henry W. Powll show up under John Powell and Agnes Womack Powell? I don't have acess to these census.

Did the Hookers or Powell marry any McCoys?
Are your McCoys related to the famous Feud? My co-workers husband is related to that family.

thanks Cynndi

Hi Cynndi,

Yes, he does show up in 1850 as the son of John W. and Agnes W. Powell in the Southern District of Halifax County, VA.

1850 Census Southern District, Halifax County, VA, enumerated 10th Aug 1850, Lines 23 through 32, HN/FN: 94-94.

JOHN W. POWELL, 43, MW, Planter, 18000 (?), VA.
AGNES W. POWELL, 48, FW, VA.
HENRY W. POWELL, 18, MW, Overseer, VA.
ELIZABETH S. POWELL, 15, FW, VA.
JACKSON POWELL, 13, M, VA.
JOHN J. POWELL, 11, MW, VA.
LOUISE B. POWELL, 10, FW, VA.
AGNES W. POWELL, 7, FW, VA.
MARIA S. POWELL, 6, FW, VA.
THOMAS J. POWELL, 4, MW, VA.

Value of Real Estate looks like it could be 18000 or 1800, but it's hard to tell if the enumerator was trying to make a correction.

The 1840 Census only lists head of household.

I'm still trying to prove a McCoy connection through Urania's mother, Nancy Bruffey. My McCoy line is not connected to the Hatfields-McCoys of feuding fame, at least not that I've been able to find.
