When population became such that it was difficult to distinguish between people of the same first name, and Old Tom and Young Tom was no longer enough for identification... the practice of Surnames came into use. Then the Thomas who lived by the streams and the Thomas who made barrels, could be identified by being called Thomas Brooks and Thomas Cooper. As sons so frequently followed their father's occupation in those times, the last name was passed down, and that became the naming practice. (Now there are a bajillion Thomas Brooks, and Thomas Coopers, making their genealogy search a nightmare... thank goodness Gorsuch isn't so common)Other surnames were taken from the location, and are called place names. Gorsuch is a place name. It is from a town in England. The info below is copied....
"In the Visitation of London 1633-5 (Harlein Society; Visitations, vol XV, page 327) is found the pedigree of the Gorsuch family of Bishopsgate Ward, London, recorded in 1633 by Daniel Gorsuch of London. There is an illustration of the Gorsuch arms, and it says: "Letters pattents dated 1577 granted to Robert Hillson of London marchant (that's how they spelled merchant then) by Clar. Cooke and continued to the descendants of Gorsuch to bear as their paternall coats."
The above refers to the granting of a Coat of Arms. My source goes on to say.....

1. William Gorsuch (1), died in 1575/6, a young man; descended out of Lancashire from the town of Gorsuch, which was apparently about 4 miles northwest of Ormskirk(Ormschurch), Lancashire; was a London merchant; married in 1566 to Avice, daughter of Robert Hillson, a London merchant. They had: 2."
Then there follows the information about their son Daniel and his infamous son the Rev. John Gorsuch who married Anne Lovelace, descended from much historical and royal heritage. I'm directly descended from this John Gorsuch and Anne Lovelace, and have lots more information that is in the family book. Let me know if you are in this line, or want more of it posted here. Why was the Rev. John Gorsuch refered to as infamous? Ah...
THAT story..... wanna hear it?

I was browsing on the surname Gorsuch.
My great grandmother was Annie Gorsuch, daughter of John Gorsuch of Litherland Park and Parker Street, Liverpool.
I was born in Southport near Ormskirk.
I am interested in more information on the Gorsuch connection and in particular Litherland Park where John Gorsuch lived. I have this from the obituary of my great gandmother and I also have her photograph.
Sincerely Kathy Upex

Dear Kathy,
I have been researching the Gorsuch family for many years so I might have a mention of your John Gorsuch somewhere but you haven't given any dates. The family came from the Liverpool area of Lancashire in the 12th century from a place called Scarisbrick. If you can give me some dates I might be able to help.

Hi Dorothy. I have seen your comments about the Gorsuch's and your research into the family. Amelia Gorsuch 1814-1886 was my GGG Grandmother - she married William Took in 1831. Her parents were Henry Gorsuch b.1791 and Elizabeth Barker, and I have obtained info that the line before Henry includes 4 Williams b.1760, 1718, 1681, and 1647, a Thomas b.1826 back to Henneus Gorsuch b.1603. They all seem to have lived in Huyton, Liverpool until around 1750, and William b.1760 was born in Clerkenwell, London. Subsequent generations until my father's all lived in the East End. Before Henry and Elizabeth the information is limited to male ancestor and year of birth. Does any of this make connections with your work? Do you have more information? My direct email address is lioneltook@aol.com. All the best. Lionel Took
