Looking for living relatives of Philip Server born 1885 in Crow Montana, son of Frederick (b.1849 Penn). He had a sister, Marie, b.1887.

Philip was married to Thelma Austin. They had a daughter Darlene.

Tragic circumstances surrounded this family.

All died in Santa Monica California in April 1930.

No connection to Michigan, sorry. This connection goes back to Germany and then to Pennsylvania... then out west. If you'd like to give me some names, I'll take a look in my genealogy to see if there is a connection.

Thank you so much! I am related to Server's who go to Michigan, but past Frederick the trail evaporates completely. Since I live about 80 miles from Big Horn in Miles City MT it is interesting to me to see if I can establish a link. Esp since our great-great grandfather was also named Frederick. Philip and his father owned the Server Hotel that was located in what is now Custer, MT. Found a wonderful write-up on your Frederick on here. I am fairly certain our branch of the Server family originated in PA as well, but like I said, there is a huge hole in my info. Again thank you for your help.

Surnames: Server or Ross
I am great granddaughter of Robert Park Ross & Marie Server (Ross), sister of Philip--just learned about the tragic circumstances surrounding Philip's wife & daughter--pretty horrifying really.

Hi Julie-
I am the great granddaughter of Marie Server (Ross) sister of Philip and daughter of Fred and Annabelle. My dad is James H. Ross, grandson of Marie Server Ross & Robert Park Ross from Hardin. My dad passed away in June 2011 (see Obit in Billings Gazette) and my brother Deren, mom Grace and my family reside in Northern California. Yes, her father did run a hotel in Big Horn County--how are you connected?

Julie,

I am the great grandson of Frederick E. Server. His biography was published in 2011 under the title "First to Arrive on Custer's Battlefield.

I live in Billings and there is some information that I would like to discuss with you.

I just found your entry today and am responding.

My e-mail address is raross45@gmail.com

Theresa Ross in California is a cousin.

Kind regards,
Rickard Ross

Hi Rickard, nice to see you on message boards, I've been thinking of you and meaning to email you with a document I recently acquired. I was able to get a hold of Phil's interment record from Woodlawn Cemetery.

There isn't anything we don't already know on the document with the exception of two items:
1. Friend /near relative: C.J. Mendenhall
2. Remarks it states: "Free grave - Donated by City Council, 4/22/30".

I can finally put an end to my question of who did bury Phil. I know it wasn't my Grandmother's Family. I thought it could be his sister Marie but it wasn't her either.

The one thing I found odd was "Friend/near relative: C.J. Mendenhall". Mendenhall is the funeral home where Thelma, Darlene and Phil were taken after their deaths.
I asked the cemetery director if it is common for a funeral home to mark them self as friend/relative. She said no, and maybe I should seek more information on that relationship.

Would you like me to email a copy to you?
Take care.
Kim

Thanks, Kim.

I will keep the information you sent and do not need the information you will get from the cemetery director.

I am glad you saw my reply to Julie Server. I do not know if there is a connection with our families, both our Frederick E. Server and the Minnesota Fredrick E. Server originated in Pennsylvania. I think there is some family relationship rather than a coincidence.

I send you my best wishes,
Rickard
