Have traced back to Alfred and Lucian McDaniel as far back as 1850. Lucian married into the Shortt family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Joe, I too, am trying to find out as much as I can about this family . Lucian McDaniel is my great-great grandfather, his dghtr. was Olive A. she married John Anderson from Summers County W.Va.. She was my fathers grandmother, I just found out about Lucian and Albert through Wes McDaniel, Any info that I can find out I will pass it on to you and would love to find out any that you would be willing to share. Where does your link come in(from which child)? Do you still live in the Floyd County area? I was born in W.Va., but we moved to Maryland when I was seven years old, where I live now. I would love to know just where the McDaniel family lived in as far as Floyd County goes.Grandma Ollie always said that she was from around Salem but don,t know just where as she only went back only went back once, many years after she left at the age of 19. My Dad passed away in 1992, but he always said that the family was from Ireland but I'm not sure when they came to America are you? Looking foreward to hearing from you, Pat

Alfred McDaniel's parents were:

William McDaniel b. c.1735-1740 probably Va.
d. April 1800 either King George co. or Prince Wm. co.
[no will, died intestate, estate probated in King George county including his assets in Prince Wm. co. Va. (King George co.Sherriffs Bond Book 1795-1825 pages 201-202, 172-177 and 206-207 ]
William McDaniel was an Inn/Tavern owner in Dumfries, Prince Wm. co. VA. starting in 1778, he first ran the Inn/Tavern from his home then later built a seperate building which burned 12 September 1786 and he rebuilt and re-opened 24 November 1786 - Per the "Virginia Gazette and Alexandria Gazette". Other advertisements between the years 1784-1790 in the same paper spell the surname: McDaniel, MacDaniel, M'Daniel and M'Donald [all in refference to the tavern in Dumfries, Prince Wm. Va.]

Alfred's mother was Nursey [potentially Ursula Gravatt]
b. 10 June 1752 in King George [Stafford co. VA.] co. VA.
d. abt. 1793 in Prince Wm. co. VA.

William married a 2nd time Lucy Gravatt and they had 3 children together.

Alfred was born in Dumfries, Prince William, Virginia, not Agusta county as has been suggested. He married Nancy Goodwin.

10th Infantry, age 23; born in Dumfries, Prince Wm. Va. enlisted Hilsborough, NC. 15 Sep. 1814 discharged Raleigh, NC. 24 April 1815
This puts his birth between 1789-1790 which does not match the census records of 1860 that give his age as 76, b. 1784-1786 but the occupation is the same, Hatter. The birth dates are as we all know subject to question in census records.

Cousin,
This is sort of a form letter and will be sent to each person that has inquired about Alfred McDaniel. I have made contact to the messages about Alfred McDaniel in July 2009 and info from Joe McDaniel gave me the most information. It seems his info was well researched and sort of gave the resources from which his info came from. I do not like to put info into my family tree without telling where it came from. I am hoping that if we could all pool our info and where it came from it would save us a lot of time. I would be glad to collect the info if you will email it to me and then I would print it out and send it by regular mail or email. I am wondering if Joe McDaniel is the same Joe McDaniel that wrote the loose leaf notebook about the McDaniel family from Montgomery Co. VA and gave copies to the children of Charles Henry McDaniel who live in Winston-Salem, NC? If I add Joe’s info my family tree goes from his William McDaniel in King George and Prince William Co’s. in 1734-1740 to the McDaniel family as they lived in Botetourt, Montgomery and Floyd Cos in VA and I have just traced one family into WVA. Some of the McDaniel’s lived in Salem, VA (a short distance from my house). I just found a cemetery that is full of our relatives and I would be glad to send you photos of their tombstones. I am going to Floyd Co sometime in the next week or two and I will try to find the records of Alfred in Floyd Co. I will give you my email address and email address. I you will do the same and attach all the info you have on the McDaniel family and tell me where the info came from I will put it all together and send it to you. My grandfather was Charles Henry McDaniel, ggrandfather was Edward, gggrandfather was Reuben, ggggrandfather was Alfred Sr. I have already begun tracing Alfred’s children.
Please help me.
