I am researching the Hyde family who settled in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess county. My ancestor Liberty Hyde came to the United states early in the 1800s, supposedly from Hyde Park, England. I would love to correspond with anyone who might be reseaching this family. "Joanie"

Hi Joan:
I have some Hyde ancestors from Poughkeepsie NY that
might be a relative of your ancestor Liberty Hyde.
My third Great Grandfather, Dyer Hyde, was from
Poughkeepsie NY. I don't know anything about
his parents or siblings.
His son Edwin Numan Hyde was born in
Poughkeepsie on June 22, 1816. Edwin married Julia Brown,
and they had 5 children: Julia Augusta Hyde b1838,
James Cadle Hyde b1840 in NY or NJ (my great grandfather),
Charles E. Hyde b1841, Theodore Hyde b1844, and
Weston Cairn Hyde b1847.
I know their children as well if you want it.
Good luck on finding more.

Thank you so much for your reply. You are the one and only person I have heard from with a possible connection to my family. I note that one of the children of Edwin Numan Hyde was a Charles E. Hyde, born in 1841. Edwin and Charles seem to have surfaced , as family names, in my Hyde family. I have a Edwin Charles Hyde, who was my G-Grandfather, who married Abbie Moseley of Mass. in 1842. Also, found pictures with the notation of Edwin Nelson Hyde on back. I, too, have no idea who Libertys siblings were, nor his ancestors. However, my Aunt Grace, before she died, sent me a sheet with supposedly the family tree on it. Since she was in her 90's, I am afraid it is really not that accurate. However, she notes on this paper that Liberty Hyde owned a Mens clothing/shoe store in Poughkeepsie in 1830 and prior. She claims that the Hydes migrated to the U.S. in the late 1700s nd were from Hyde Park, London, England prior to their migration. Liberty Hyde and Laviniah Vail Hyde had the following children: Emma Hyde, Sarah Hyde, Beckie Hyde, Edwin Charles and (name really unreadable) an Edward ? Hyde. Please keep in touch and I will do the same. I plan to go to the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery and review their records as I believe my Hyde family is buried there. I will look when I am there to see if I can come up with anything on your line. Take care and Happy Hunting. "Joanie"

Poughkeepsie, NY "Hyde's"

Hi Joanie:
I am more intriqued by the similarities between your Poughkeepise ancestor "Edwin Charles Hyde" and mine "Charles E. Hyde", because you mentioned an Aunt Grace and a picture of "Edwin Nelson Hyde."
My family records show that Charles E. Hyde had three children: Albert, Walter, and Grace. But that is all I know about Charles' family, since it was his brother that was my great-grandfather. My family records are handwritten notes from my Grandmother and I wonder if they could be wrong enough to match your names. Edwin Nelson Hyde and Edwin Numan Hyde are close, and my Dad told me that they weren't sure of the middle name being Numan.
Also, one other similarity is that you said they may have come from "Hyde Park" in London in the late 1700's. That is what my Grandmother told me.
One other thought, do you suppose that the name "Liberty" for Liberty Hyde could be a nickname? If so, it may be that your Edwin Charles Hyde's father was Dyer (Liberty) Hyde.
Thanks again for your info.
I'll keep looking for more about Dyer.
John

John: Wow, there sure seems to be a similarity in our Hyde line. My Charles had five children: Laviniah (my grandmother); Charles N. Hyde; Aurelia Hyde, Nelson, and David. I do have a copy of the wedding announcement from the Poughkeepsie paper with Libertys' marriage announcement to Lavinia Anne Vail. What I am thinking is that since there are so many similarities, maybe Dyer and Liberty were brothers. Another similiarity is: Laviniah, my grandmother named her children Walter (my dad); Grace, Robert, and Margaret. Walter and Grace, matching yours. Let's keep in touch and look into this further. Where did your family settle? Thank you so much for your reply. Happy Hunting...be sure to keep in touch. Thanks "Joanie"

Hi Joanie:
Thanks for the info.
I think my Hyde ancestors all lived in Chicago or Detroit during the 1880-1920 period. After that, they spread all over the U.S.
I'll keep looking for more about Dyer Hyde.

Hello John, I've corresponded a couple of years back with Joan House about Edwin. My father's name was Joffre, his father was Rollin, and his father was James Cadle Hyde. Thank you for the additional information. I can give you more on James if you need it. I have a copy of a handwritten letter he wrote to his son Rollin.
