Surnames: Madison
My grandparents (Charles and "Lutie" Steinberg) had an old photo album in their home in Fairbury, IL. In the album is a picture of a family. On the back of the picture written by an unknown person is the name, Annie Madison. Maybe she even wrote it, I don't know. The picture was taken by H. W. Lawhead, Onarga and Gilman, IL. I would love to know who Annie Madison was and also identify the people in the photo. I will share the photo with a family member as well, if I can locate anyone. Can anyone help me?

I have an Annie Madison in my family tree. I do not know if she ever lived in Illinois or not. She is a distant cousin and I have only sketchy information about her and her family. I'm pasting the details about her family into this posting. I hope it can help you identify your Annie. It also includes all four sides of that family line (my father's side) just in case there were any family members from the other families, Wilson, McGarry, Markey and Cannon

Best of Luck,
Pat Wilson-Perkins

Note: Gen 2 - On Annie’s & Thomas’ son's birth certificate it is noted that Annie was born in Scotland, however, my father remembers his “Aunt Nellie” (her sister) telling him that the family home was in Armagh, Ireland.

Note: Gen 2 - In the 1930 Census for Katharine Fielding it has that she was born in Scotland but both her parents were born in Northern Ireland

Note: Gen 2 - On May 29th 1890 Ellen F. McGarry was married to William Kirby in Brooklyn, NY. The marriage certificate states that Ellen's home address was 196 15 St., S. Brooklyn. She was born in Kilmarrick, Scotland. Her father was J. P. McGarry and her mother was Catherine McKeon; which is another spelling for Catherine's Maiden name! William Kirby was the son of Samuel Kirby and Mary Walsh.

ANDREW WILSON - (GG-GF) b. IRELAND D.O.B.: Unknown Spouse: Unknown Date & Place of Death: Unknown, presumed USA, NYC area

THOMAS FRANCIS WILSON, (G-GF) b.1863 in Connecticut (?), USA, married to Annie MCGARRY, lived in Brooklyn, NY, died 6/19/1928 and buried in Brooklyn, NY, Green-Wood cemetery.

Have TFW on census records in 1900 with his wife, Annie C McGarry & son, TFW, Jr., 1910 (after his wife died) and 1920 census all in Brooklyn all saying birthplace "Connecticut" and both parents from "Ireland".

We don't really know if the Wilson's were Catholic or Protestant. We sort of feel that they might have been Protestant and converted to Catholic when they married into the McGarry line, but again no solid proof. Until I can get more details about Andrew or TFW, Sr.'s birth and youth I really don't have anything to go on.

Note: On their son's birth certificate it is noted that Annie was born in Scotland, however, my father remembers his aunt (her sister) telling him that the family home was in Armagh, Ireland. It was verified on her death certificate that both of her parents were born in Ireland. She was Scottish by birth since she was born there and lived in Scotland until they emigrated to the U.S. however her parents were both Irish so she was of full Irish ancestry. Her father is John McGarry Birthplace: Ireland. Her mother's Maiden Name is listed differently in various sources. Annie's death certificate has it as: Catherine McGone (I think, but I'm going to have to check the penmanship and see if it's anything else.) Birthplace: Ireland, for Catherine. Annie was born in Scotland. Annie died at the age of 44 yr. 10 mos. 9 days. She was a resident of the U.S. and of NYC for 41 years. So she lived in Scotland for 3 years. Her parents must have gone to Scotland to find work either before Catharine was pregnant with Margaret or during her pregnancy and then stayed in Scotland. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1874 (?) date not definite. Margaret was the oldest child (b. March 1864, Scotland; d. September 23, 1940); Annie was second (b. February 6, 1870, Scotland, d. February 3, 1915); John P. Jr. was third (b. 1876 (?) I'm not sure where this date came from; or 1864 according to the 1910 census, d. 9/1934, he is the only family member interred in the McGarry family plot in Holy Cross cemetery. All the girls are in Green-Wood cemetery.) I had thought that John had been born in Brooklyn, NY but the 1910 census has his birthplace as Scotland so we aren't sure. Katherine "Kate" is fourth (b. 1880, d. Apr. 2, 1939) and Ellen "Nellie" is the youngest (b. Sept. 1867, however on her marriage certificate it said "age 26" on May 29, 1890 which would have put her birth year 1864 & d. Dec. 7, 1936) My husband found a McGarry family on a ship manifest for the Olympia that arrived 17 June 1872 with all five children with the same names, there was one additional child, Mary A. born 1858, and an adult female that was probably Catherine but her signature didn't transcribe correctly when they were copying it. Could it be that an older child died some time during childhood but I don’t have any record of it?

Gaelic spelling of McGarry/magfhearadhaigh sent by: Philip McGarry on 29 Mar 2005 link to

The 1870 Federal census for NYC, 8th District, 18th Ward, page 24, lists a “Thomas McKEON” age 40, Furniture Dealer, Irish nationality, and a “John MCGARRY”, age 35, Marble Polisher, Irish nationality, both living at the same address. This could be my John and a relative of Annie’s family. The age matches for my John.

The Green-Wood records only had the dates of death. From Annie's death certificate her birth date may be March 25th 1870 since they listed her age as 44 years, 10 mos. and 9 days but no birth date. On her gravestone, it's February 6th 1870. We'll have to work on clarifying that some more. She had been sick from April 1914 until her death on February 3, 1915. She died of General Exhaustion (primary) and Pernicious Anemia (secondary). Initially interred in Holy Cross Cemetery but removed to Green-Wood Cemetery on 5/16/1919. Annie was 19 yrs. and 7 or 8 months when she gave birth to Grandpa/Dad's Dad, Thomas F. Jr. on October 14, 1889 so her death was unrelated to his birth.

Catherine McGarry’s Maiden Name was spelled as MCGONE on her daughter’s ANNIE MCGARRY WILSON’S death certificate. It could also possibly be spelled MCGORE on Annie’s death certificate since it is difficult to read. On her daughter’s MARGARET’S death certificate her Maiden Name is spelled MCKUHNE. However on Catherine's daughter's Ellen's marriage certificate Catherine's Maiden Name is spelled Catherine McKEON, which is probably the one that is correct since she was still alive at Ellen's marriage and not at the death of Annie and Margaret)

The CANNON side

These are all siblings, I don’t know who their parents’ are other than the notation that Gram made of a “Michael Cannon” on the old map of “Erin’s First Families” from 1964 and the other notation of “Clark’s and Corbett’s” (see below).

Gram's map from the NY Sunday News, for March 15, 1964, that was titled "Erin's First Families" had noted on it:
"Clark's & Corbett's - Grandmother Cannon's family from Tyrone.
Michael Cannon from Connaught.
Markey's from County Meade "Towns Land of Ervey"'

====================================================================================

From this we know that The Markey's are from: County Meath, The townland of Ervey, in the Civil Parish of Enniskean in the Barony of Lower Kells, Kells Poor Law Union.

We do not know the church parish that they were from which is where most of the records were probably kept during that time. They were Roman Catholic.

Although I'm not sure who the "Clark's & Corbett's" were, I presume they were Gram's grandmother Cannon's family names, her grandmothers' parents last names. They were from County Tyrone which is in the Province of Ulster. The County is now part of Northern Ireland. Ulster has nine counties -- six are part of Northern Ireland (now a separate country) and three are in the Republic of Ireland.

I'm not sure who "Michael Cannon" was but he was from Connaught. It's a province. Ireland is divided into four provinces - Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaught. Connaught is made up of Counties Mayo, Sligo, Galway, Leitrim and Roscommon. Trying to find more about him will be very difficult because we know so little about him.

====================================================================================

Francis & Fanny Markey (our Great-great-great-grandparents) are the parents of Patrick Markey.
Patrick Markey became a US citizen. I have a copy of his naturalization papers. I don't know if Francis & Fanny did.

In a nutshell: The Markey's are from: County Meath, The townland of Ervey, in the Civil Parish of Enniskean in the Barony of Lower Kells, Kells Poor Law Union.

We do not know the church parish that they were from which is where most of the records were probably kept during that time. They were Roman Catholic.

====================================================================================

The Cannon's were Gram's mother's side of the family, (Alice Gertrude Cannon). She was Betsy's and Dad's Grandmother. Betsy and her mother are named after her, well Betsy is Alice Elizabeth.

Betsy, I know you sent me everything you had about the Cannon's and Markey's but do you remember anything from your conversations with Gram about the Cannon side of the family? I haven't started on that side at all. I should start posting messages on the message board since there were several siblings. Last question; Lucy asked was if Betsy was a McGarry. No, McGarry is on the Wilson line, Annie McGarry married Thomas F. Wilson, Sr. Betsy is related through the Markey's and the Cannon's side.

====================================================================================

1) Francis & Fanny Markey had 5 children, one of whom was Patrick Markey
2) Patrick Markey married Julia Gargan had 12 children, one of whom was Edward Joseph Markey
3) Edward Joseph Markey married Alice Gertrude CANNON had 5 children
4) Mary Angela Markey married Thomas Francis Wilson, Jr. had one son, Thomas F. Wilson, III
4) Rose Cecilia Markey (died age 45 in 1945)
4) Lawrence Aloysius Markey (died in 1959)
4) Edward Joseph Markey, (died age 60), married Nettie Mae Tracy had one son Edward J. Markey lives in Blue Hill, Maine
4) Alice Gertrude Markey (died age 56) married John J. Clements had one daughter, Alice Elizabeth (Betsy) Clements McKenna

====================================================================================

Betsy is related to the Markey and Cannon side not the McGarry and Wilson side but she likes reading the different stories and being kept in the genealogy loop so I keep sending her the information about both sides of the family. We have only that one 2nd cousin that I met through my research on Dad's side. They live down near Mom and Dad in Florida. Even though I've been "talking" to the husband, it's actually the wife who is the relative. His last e-mail to me Spring 2004 said that he had sent me pretty much all that he had. (Notation – I heard from RLM – he said the big roadblock was John McGarry, Jr. I have much bigger roadblocks than him in my other trees.)

Fr. Tom Cannon
Fr. Tom Cannon was the son of Thomas and Ann Cannon and Sr. Margaret Cannon's (the Maryknoll nun) sister. They had one other sister, Mary, who died in childbirth with twins. The twins did survive. That's a path of relatives I need to track down. Thomas Cannon, Sr. was Alice Gertrude Cannon Markey's brother. Alice was Dad's and Betsy's grandmother; Gram's mother; our great-grandmother. I do remember going to his funeral and feeling pretty special since we were the relatives of this important priest. I remember Gram used to have him for dinner whenever he was back in the US and we would go over to see him. Gram was always so proud of him and Sr. Margaret for the work that they did. Dave and I kept up contact with Sr. Margaret up until she died just a "few" years ago. (It's probably closer to 9 or 10 by now but she lived a good long life.)

I wish I had more because it would be interesting to have more details on both of their lives.

From Betsy:
My main memory of Father Tom is when we were at graveside at a family funeral (I’m suddenly wondering if it was your grandmother’s) and he was asked to say the Our Father. He was so ponderous and gave such a dramatic rendering that my Tom said that when he was a Jesuit seminarian they used to call priests like that “ferverts”—fervent to the point of perversion!

On Father Tom Cannon: He was President of the Sodality of Mary in Manila in the Phillipines for 25 years. Periodically, he would come and visit your grandmother and grandfather. He was always begging for money for his mission work. Your sainted grandmother would, of course, write him a check. Your ever-wise grandfather was always suspicious of where the money was actually going and knew that Father Tom was just counting on your grandmother’s never-failing generosity.

About the Powers Family
I don't know where the name Powers came in. Although I have heard it before, I don't see it on the papers I have from Betsy / Gram. Yes, I did like Johnny Powers who lived next door to Gram and eventually they moved into Manhattan. He was my first boyfriend who bought me a gift of two Beatles records and a horse statue. He also used to walk me home from St. Ignatius each day. We'd walk up the stairs rather than ride the elevator! It's amazing the things that come back to you when a name gets brought back up. I hadn't thought about that in, oh, some 30 odd years. I don't know if we're related to them in some way. He had an older sister who was your friend.

From Betsy:
The Powers family had 10 children. They were not related to us. Your grandmother told me that when Mr. Powers was out of work, her father, E.J. Markey, Sr., would send bags of groceries over to their house on Senator Street. That’s all I know.

Do you know where she lived in Illinois? I don't know anything about Annie. Her name is on the back of the picture that was taken probably in Iroquois or Ford County, IL. If you think this could be your Annie, I could scan you a copy of the picture.
