Does anyone with a Butler lineage have mention of a William Lewis Butler, born mid to late 1700's, who was in the Army, asked for leave to go see sick wife, was denied and deserted, and disappeared with family? I have a William Lewis in my line I have had more than one "cousin" say they always heard in their branch that this happened, he dropped the Butler and moved as William Lewis.
TIA, Alicia

I don't know where he is from. All I know of him is he died in Guilford County, NC in 1831, had a wife named Courtney and children William A., Derastus L., Ira R., Elvina, Ethalinda, and Ophelia.

My Butlers were in SC in late 1700's in Abbeville District. Names of Enoch, James and others. What are the names in your lineage. We have at least on brother that has not been determined. Will share more info if any chance of a connection.
