Trying to trace my Great Grandfathers family, born 1873 Buckinghamshire. His father was someone Redden and mother I belive Harriet Jenkins and this is how his name became hyphernated in the 1911 census he was living at 10 Leys Cottages, The Warren, Clapham, Beds with his wife Ellen and 5 children Mary, David, Harry, Richard and Gladys.

The 1901 census, as Joseph Redding, gives his age as 29 born Newport Pagnell. In 1881 (available free on www.familysearch.org)there's a Joseph Jenkins age 8 born Newport Pagnell living with his grandparents George, 57, and Elizabeth 51 Jenkins. All of their children were born at Gt Linford. In 1871 living in Newport Pagnell was Harriet Jenkins 17 born Gt Linford.

If you check the GRO index on www.freebmd.org.uk there's a birth of Joseph Redden Jenkins in Newport Pagnell registration district in Mar 1873. He may have been the illegitimate son of Harriet, and she gave a broad hint as to who the father might have been. If you purchase his birth certificate you'll get his parents' names, although I suspect the father's name will be blank.

I have applied for a copy of his birth certificate so maybe that might throw some light on his fathers background but as you say maybe not! Thanks
