My brother and I are trying to search back over family records and have come to a standstill. We are descendants of Francis Kipling, who father Thomas Kipling was from England but we don't know where in England. Thomas' father's name was also Thomas. Thomas Kipliing m. Mary Jane Hassop in England and were the parents of the Francis mentioned above. If you have further information, we would be grateful.

My great-grandfather (Thomas) was a brother to your Francis. I believe they were born in Middleton on Teesdale (Durham) ENG. They also had a brother, William. Their parents were John Kipling and Elizabeth Thompson. These 3 brothers mined coal in area around
Colchester (McDonough) Il. I don't have much going back any further but do have some
info on the brothers.

Thank you so much for responding. Yes, my grandfather, Francis, was a coal miner in Colchester, McDonough County, IL. He had nine children and I know that his father was Thomas Kipling and his mother was Mary Jane Hassop. They were from England. I will be happy to share information with you. I would love to get information on my grandfather's brothers. Thanks again.

Please contact me at kipper326@hotmail.com
Maybe we can share some new info with each
other although I do not have a lot, even after years of "searching", including a sister who has been to England twice and spent
some time in the institutions that should have held some information on this family. I
have also looked at some census film that was very much unreadable--lots of Kiplings but couldn't figure out much. Please respond to me directly, and I will be glad to send you what I have--mostly from my father and grandmother (wife of your grandfather's brother).

Karen, Francis "Pete" Kipling was my father's father. Francis' father's name was Thomas and he married Mary Jane Hassop, who, according to the census report, came here with a son (always referred to as Mike Harpe. His given name was William). I believe they were married after she got here. How she came to Colchester, IL or where they met is not known. Francis (Frank, Pete) was one of a big family. His brothers and sister were Mary, Septimus, Thomas, Josephus, John, Abraham, Clarence and Benjamin. They were all born in the US. Great-grandfather, Thomas, came from England. Francis was indeed a coal miner in Colchester, IL. He died of "consumption" when I was very young...probably in the mid or late 1940's. That is basically all the information I have, except I can pretty much trace Francis' offspring down to present day.

I do know that Thomas' (the ancestor)parents were John Kipling and Elizabeth Thompson, but I have had little luck in getting much info about them. My grandfather was Clarence, brother to Francis. Thomas served in the Civil War, and I have his pension, etc. papers from the National Archives. I believe that Mary Jane Hassop may have been a niece to William (Thomas' brother) wife, and that she came back with them on one of William's trips to England (he took several) to marry Thomas---but I have no proof of this--just the times and names seem to fit. I did find a Septimus Kipling and a William Kipling born in England to John and Elizabeth at about the right time, but there wasn't much other information. I have been working on this for years, and my sister has been to England twice searching records but finding nothing. There is a story that Thomas (and his brothers??) were "kicked out" of England for poaching on posted land so maybe there aren't many records. Anyway, I do have dates (births, deaths, some marriages) of your Francis' brothers and sisters if you need them. My father is Ray Kipling who still lives in Colchester. Who was your father?

Karen,

Yes, I would love to have the information you have available. The Kipling information on our family tree is pretty scarce. We also were told that Thomas "left England with the Sheriff one step behind for poaching" so must have been true.

Thanks so much for responding.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that my father was Homer Kipling Sr., son of Francis and his wife, Altabelle Cooley. I have a brother, Homer Theodore Jr. also. My two sisters, Verna Lucille and Frances Irene, passed away in 1987 and 1984.
