I have been researching this family as part of a review of Cornwall. St Cleer/Tremar & Liskeard Rodd's are ancestors of my children and grandchildren. Trying to find a link for John Rodd and Sarah, parents of William Rodd born 1818, probably at Tremar, and christened at St Cleer.

I do not know of a John Rodd and Sarah, nor of any William Rodd of that date.

The Trebartha family has

Vice-Adm John Tremayne Rodd (1769-1838) who married Jane Rennell in 1809;
Adm John Rashleigh Rodd (1816-1892) who married his cousin Wilhelmina Rodd in 1852.

Also William Edward Rodd died an infant in 1734;
William Rodd another infant died in 1780.

There are no other Johns or Williams that I know of in the 18th or 19th centuries. So, in spite of the proximity of Liskeard, etc to North Hill, there seems to be no connection, I’m sorry to say.

These landed families tended not to mix with the rest of the population, except when having affairs ! My great-grandmother was the result of such an affair in 1861 at Trebartha between the squire’s son home from university at Easter, and a kitchen maid !

Our Rodds are from Boscastle, so I'm sure they're no relation to yours, however I do know that at least one member of the Rodd family of note from Cornwall emigrated to Sydney, Australia. There is a Rodd Island on Sydney Harbour, and there are some interesting government records on the activities of this family in the NSW archives online. If it is the same family (I think the military background is a giveaway) then you may find some interesting information 'down under'.

The Rodds I know of moved from Hereford to Devon c.1600 and to Trebartha in 1730. The only others of this family in Cornwall that I know are a couple who lived for a short time in Crowan (south of Camborne) c.1800 before inheriting Trebartha, and bachelor who lived in Penzance. One of the Trebartha Rodds owned a holiday cottage near Newquay in the 19th century.

Thank you, I will investigate the Australian lead.

Delighted to hear from you.

I expect you've read all my Ancestry posts, so you'll know my connection to the Rodds.

You will also know that the Latham family purchased the Trebartha estate. I have visited Trebartha a number of times over the last fifteen years to tour the lovely gardens, and Rosemary Latham was extremely helpful in providing information about the Rodds and Trebartha. Rosemary alas died a couple of years or so ago, but I am still in touch with her daughter Caroline whom I saw on my visit last September.

You mention your mother and aunts. I have been trying for half an hour to remember the name of the fourth sister, and of course her name was "Hope". How could I forget that?

I have a number of photos you may be interested in, some of which you may have more information about than I have. Most of them were given me by the Lathams, or rather they lent me the negatives, but some have come from other sources. I also have an extensive Rodd tree for you.

I can't send you attachments through Ancestry, so please contact me at:

I look forward to hearing from you.

You can find that William Rodd here
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kayhin/722...

In the 1871 census he is 54. His son, William John Rodd emigrated to New Zealand and then to Australia. My grandmother was a descendant.

It would be strange to be a Rodd living in Cornwall and not be a part of the Trebartha family.

I doubt it's true that all Rodds in Cornwall are related, despite the rarity of the name.

The Rodds came to Trebartha from near Exeter in 1729-30. On the LDS Family Search database, there are a number of earlier Cornwall Rodds, including a couple of records in Bodmin in 1560, maybe 40 years before the (Trebartha) Rodds arrived in Devon from Herefordshire.

I have inherited from my mother, Hope Rodd, whose home was Trebatha Hall, (She was one of the four sisters mentioned earlier in correspondence) a portrait of James Rodd - Admiral and Privateer 1741 to 1782 - I think. It is a splendid portrait and I am soon to get it looked at by the experts on the Antiques Roadshow. I have tried to find out more about James Rodd but sadly to no avail. If you come across anything please let me know. My mobile number is 07768868848 if you wish to discuss.
