Looking for the mother of Lydia TALLANT. Lydia TALLANT married Calvin P. HARMON and lived at Houlka, MS (Chickasaw County) at one time. Lydia was born in Philadelphia, MS. and was a small girl in 1903 when her mother died. "Buster" TALLANT (brother to Lydia) and Lou Tallant THUNDERBIRD (Sister to Lydia) were other family members. "Buster" TALLANT became the guardian of Lydia TALLANT.

Please contact Sandy Stocks if you have information.

Sandy...I may not help much but I will make some inquiries...my grandfather was J. B. "Buster" Tallant. I remember Lydia and Cal very well. I have seen the supposed "gravesite" of Buster's and Lydia's mother. I have heard stories about their mother's death and about him raising Lydia.

Thanks for responding to my inquiry. I would love to know where my great-grandmother's grave is located. Also, I would love to know what native american bloodline we have; i.e. I have been told it is Cherokee. I would love to know if that is correct. Any information that you are able to give me will be most appreciated. (My last name is now Ray - due to marriage) I wonder if you knew my mother and father - Maybelle Harmon and Jim Frank Smith? They have both passed away (one died in 98 and the other in 99).
Thanks, Sandy

Sandy, sorry it took so long to get back to you. Lydia's mother's name was Mittie Ella (sp.?) Tallant. I know of one brother named John who ran a trading post. There may have been more siblings. Her gravesite is in Calhoun County Ms. It was a concrete marker with the name Tallant etched on it. It was very overgrown with brush and we cleared some of it. I remember meeting Maybelle. My mother's name is Ruth. I think the grave is located on some land ownwd by the Bailey's. I will try to find out exactly where. My grandfather did not like to talk about their childhood. It was like pulling teeth! I know he loved Lydia very much. I know that when their mother was dying, she sent him to town for sweet milk. He took a job working for a farmer and was allowed to keep Lydia with him. I will try to find out if anyone is still living that knew something about their family. I have also heard that Funderburk has been used instead of Thunderbird. There is a wealth of information on them, but not too much on the Tallant line through Mittie Ella. I'll talk to my Mom some more and tell her who you are. Where do you live? I am in Tupelo, Ms.

Sandy, I have some more information for you about the mother of Lydia, Buster, and Ida. This information came from Ida and some of it conflicts with some other information that I have. "Bub" Tallant had four sons Dan, George, Millard, and Solomon Tallant, three daughters, Dovie, Della, and Mittie Ella . Jimmy Thomas married(?) Mittie Ella and they had Ida Lou. Her people told her that Jimmy Thomas went to war with her grandpa Henry Soloman and never returned. Ida Lou and her mother lived with her grandfather. She says that then they went to live with Mittie Ella's brother and his wife Hattie Snyder Tallant .Ida Lou says that her mother did not have Buster and Lydia when she lived with her. Mittie Ella and Lydia and Buster lived with her sister in her last days.Mittie Ella had 160 acres of land that her mother gave her. Sandra Tallant Schlicht,(who has researched the Tallant family) says that Mittie Ella was born in 1868. Family members believe she was married to Jimmy Thomans but all the children kept the Tallant name. Ida Lou was raised by her uncle John B. Tallant. Ida Lou was born in 1889. Jim Buster was born in 1892. Lydia was born August 3, 1904. She married Calvin Pinkey Harmon who was born August 24, 1895. Lydia died July 1975 and Cal died August 1975. They are both buried at Rose Hill Cemetary in Chickasaw Co.

I have been trying to sort this out --Ida, Lydia, and Buster Tallent-th way spelled on all documets I have. I have a copy of Ida's death cert - , Lydia's death cert --doesn't make sense--Lydia is buried at Rose Hill
cemetery - you probably know this by now -I have just started looking. I also want to know about the
Cherokee heritage (what everyone said -that the Tallents were part Cherokee) and they all looked very much so. There sems to be a lot of conflicts in what is out there re Mittie Ella (orMiddy) with what I was told or heard and what others have been told.
Please e-mail me.

You talked to Ida Lou? When? She was my grandmother and the subject of her childhood, parents was a topic never to be discussed with her so I never asked her-asked others -all pretended not to know anything and when anything said -certainly conflicts with all I've seen. Have you been able to sort it out? I would love to hear from you. at merfrancis2@aol.com.

I would love to hear from you. I am your cousin on your Dads side of the family. My Dad and yours were Double first cousins. Also have a name that might be able to help in the Tallant-Harmon info you need. I knew you a long time ago and your brother (Danny). Have often wondered where you were. Take care. Barbara

Sandy I do believe you are my cousin. Was you mothers name maybelle? mine was hazel. I have been looking through many old pictures scince my father jack hogue died march 1st. many questions have been brought up. I dont have any answers you propably dont already know. The name funderburk keeps coming up thought to have been changed from thunderbird. If you are my cousin you know shiela walls. She had told me you had the orginal birth cirtifacate of Lydia Harmon. The information I gathred was strange. Seems as her mother or her mothers sister was married to a Thoman, thomas something like that but kept the name of tallant for her children. Who knows about her real father? I have a picture of Lydia when she looked to be about 9 or so. she has cole black hair and very dark skin. the other two children in the picture are blonde and very white. Thier names I believe from whats written on back or Lorree and Leonard. I hope you recieve this message. I am so interested in our ancestory. but as you say it seems to be very secretive. from all I gathered we may have cherokee blood. Which for me is strange because that is what is on my dads side. Wish I could prove it maybe we could get some free land. Ha Ha just kidding. nevertheless it would be great to know. of course there is alot of info that she married calvin p. harmon. If you get this my email address is susan.grubb@sbcglobal.net My husbands name is Fredrick Grubb. I'm also on facebook. If we are cousins was you maiden name smith with your stepfathers name of marks? Love to here from you.
