I am researching the Filer family. William and Laura Filer were my paternal grandfather and grandmother. They were married in the 1800s. William died in the flu epidemic in 1918. I think they were both born in Gloucester Co. but moved to Bridgeton, New Jersey at some time. Any information at all would be helpful. Thank you.

Katie,
since posting my original message in January I have discovered many things about our family. I purchased a two-volume book called The Fyler-Filer Family written by Jean Fyler Arnold. I am descended from George son of Roman and brother of Walter who came to New England in 1630 along with their sister Ann and his son George. George was a surgeon. He married Susannah Miller in 1663. She died early. He then married Edith Shaw. George and Edith had three children, Samuel born 1666, Judith 1664 and Mary born 1670. I can only go back to 1630. Was your grandfather George W. born in about 1848 and were his parents George and Susan Nichols? George's parents were William and Parnel. There does not seem to be any information on George W. in my books But will look further if you are interested. I am interested in knowing more about Roman Fyler and life before coming to the United States. If you need any more information, these two volumes have over 700 pages each. It gets very confusing sometimes as the first names are repeated throughout the family history. It is hard to keep everybody straight. Much information. Let me hear from you. Thanks for responding.

I am also researching Filer's in Glouchester Co, NJ.
I have a Benjamin Filer who served in the War of 1812. He served in Lieutenant-Colonel Joshua L. HOWELL's Regiment of Infantry, N. J. Militia. They were stationed at Billingsport, N. J. in Capt. Richard W. CHEESEMAN's Company of Infantry. Glouchester County.

Benjamin was married to Deborah DILTZ, and had the following children:
Catherine FILER, July 02, 1837 m. John Farren SMITH in Warren Co, Oh
Josiah FILER b. 1807 NJ, February 27, 1833 m. Ann TURNER in Preble Co, Oh
Mary Ann FILER b 1809 NJ, November 02, 1826 m. U Stacey COOPER in Warren Co, Oh
Benjamin FILER b 1813 NJ, October 28, 1837 m. Mary E HUDSONPILLER in Putnam Co, IN

I cannot locate any record for Benjamin FILER other than this military record. This has been a stone wall for me for a long time. I need some additional information/help.

Hi I also have progressed my Filers/Fylers originated from Stowmarket Suffolk William Fyler and Elizabeth Barker. Their son William born 20 Dec 1793 is my line. He went to Fornham St Martin and married Elizbeth Goddard (who married Richard Pettit - Richard died and Elizabeth married William in 1814 in Fornham St Martin, Suffolk. He was a journeyman Malster. They lived in Fornham St Martin for a while and then are on the 1841 census in Borley Essex. Elizabeth died in Borley and William married Susan Theobold, whose husband died in 1838 and William and Susan were married in Borley in 1844. They had a son William in 1845 and they are on all the 1851 census in Fornham St Martin with two of Susan's children George and Elizabeth. Susan died in Bury St Edmunds in 1855 and William (Snr) died in Bury St Edmunds workhouse in 1862. William (Jnr) can not find them on the 1861 census yet they are not in Bury St Edmund town. William appears on 1872 and marries Catherine Bantock in Bromley London. Found them on all census records after that date and he is listed as coming from Borley (except the transcription says Warley - misread) but tracing back is the correct family. Children of this family are George William or William George my grandfather and Walter Edward (where did he go) married one of my Mason relatives I think Ellen Sophia . Son Douglas Edward Walter John Alexander, Winifred Christine. Where are you. John Thomas (he went to Portsmouth) Albert (killed in lWW enlisted 2nd time as Adams) Rosina married Anderson and there is a son on death cert. RH Anderson West Bridgeford Nottingham 1969- where are you. Sidney lived in East London until early 1920's where did he go? married Eliz Ann Rookes Matthews son Sydney Herbert. Lillan, Alice Elizabeth (married Price and went to New Zealand) any relos? Catherine Selina married Henry Stroud.
Ellen. Please contact me if you are related to any of above.
