I have been researching in the 1850 and 1860 census data. I found Miles R Barnes in these schedules in Marion County, but there was no Morgan or Cleveland Barnes in the household. What source material do you have which connects Morgan Cleveland and Miles Reeves Barnes?

Lee,

I know Morgan Cleveland is not on the 1850 and 1860 Marion co., AL., cens., I don't know why. He is on the 1880 Marion Co., AL., cens. I do know he was a brother to Dr Thomas Benton Barnes. Dr T B Barnes was my grandfather and Morgan Cleveland Barnes is in Miles Reeves Barnes bible as a child. My mother was a child of Thomas Barnes' second wife Nancy Elisabeth McKinney. My grandfather Thomas Barnes was sixty years old when my mother was born in 1909. Morgan Cleveland Barnes was in the Union Army in the civil war. Below is an article I have on Morgan written by his daughter Ollie F. (Barnes) Weatherford..

Memories

Red Bay, Ala., Sept. 7, 1936. Sweet memories of father and mother. Mr. Morgan C. Barnes and Martha A. Barnes.

At 8 o`clock on Sunday morning, June 2, 1929, and at eleven o`clock Monday evening, August 10, 1936, the death angel visited my home, hovered over the bed-side of father and mother and bore away their spirits to a sweet and everlasting place of rest, a home of peace where all is love and sunshine, and no dark shadow ever presents itself in the path of those who are so fortunate as to reach that sunny home. I feel sure they are now basking in the sun light of God's heaven. Oh, it was such a sad hour to mother and me and the rest of his children to look up on father's form for the last time in this world.

He was born September 30, 1844, in North Carolina. Leaving there in early child hood with his father and mother, Mr. And Mrs. Miles Reaves Barnes, in an ox wagon. After traveling two months they landed in Marion County, Alabama, near Shotts' Mill, Bull Mountain Creek, where he lived most of his life. He united himself with the M. M. church in early life and took a leading part in it's affairs. He was a member of Providence Masonic Lodge, No. 401, Itawamba Co., Mississippi. He was a firm believer in it's principles and tried to practice the teaching of Masonry. In 1862 he volunteered his services to the Union army for fourteen months after peace was declared, joined the navy, and there remained in government service eighteen months after being discharged from the navy. He was a railroad man by profession, being located at Centralia, Illinois. After serving in this work for quite a while he returned to father's home in Alabama. Soon he met my mother, whose, maiden name was Marther Beaver. They were married December 20, 1866. He then took up the profession of literary teaching in the public schools of Alabama. After a course of time he moved to Rara Avis, Miss., where he continued teaching for years. He served as rural letter carrier seventeen years, fours months and fifteen days, resigning on account of old and feeble age. His remains were laided to rest in Providence cemetery, June 3, 1920, with Masonic honors.

Mother was born January 3, 1847 in South Carolina. In 1851 her father and mother, James and Bettie Beaver, loaded their furniture in an ox wagon and started South. After traveling six weeks they landed on Cotton Gin road at the state line, near Rara Avis, Miss., Itawamba county.

To this union were born ten children, of whom four died in infancy. One son, Noonan Benton Barnes who departed this life June 30, 1933, and leaving her surviving five daughters - - Miss Florence Barnes, Red Bay; Mrs. Lucy Williamson, Baldwin, Miss.; Mrs. Ida Tyra, Marietta, Miss.; Mrs. Ada Barnes, Fulton, Miss.; and Mrs. Ollie Weatherford, Red Bay; also twenty grand children and twenty-two great grand children to mourn her passing.

Oh, mother, how I do miss you! It doesn't seem real that you are gone. It seems that you will soon return yet I know that you can never. With the help of God I'll meet you where there will be no sad farewells. If your death had not been so sudden, and I could have cared for you it would have been more comforting to me. God doeth all things well, but it was hard, Oh, so hard to give you up. Just behind death's silent river in that home so bright and fair. Dear father and mother for me are waiting, and some day I will meet them there. I am sure I shall know them in heaven on that final judgment day. They are gathered around the throne singing with the angels. They have no pain or sadness and shall suffer no more on that golden shore.

God plucked mother from my sight in my lovely home in the midst of the night, and said all things are right. He left me with the battle to fight around my lonely home that once was so bright, for mother was the light. I won't say father and mother were perfect, but they were above an average.

Jerry,

Thanks for the quick response.

My relationship to Morgan Cleveland Barnes is great-great-grandson. Using an interview with my father (also named Morgan Cleveland Barnes) and census data from 1930 through 1870, I have been able to trace my line through my grandfather Fred Morgan Barnes, to Noonan Benton Barnes, to Morgan Cleveland Barnes.

I am just getting started in my research, and to this point I have not obtained any birth, marraige, or death records on my ancestors. I have asked my father about family sources such as family bibles, but I do not think that he knows of any. I was wondering if the Miles Reeves Barnes bible you mentioned has been transcribed or copied in any books or periodicals.

Since it is so early in my research, I have not published any of my information; however, if you would be interested, I can prepare a GEDCOM of my Barnes information and send it to you.

The narrative written by Ollie (Barnes) Weatherford contains some good information and plenty of new leads for me to pursue. Thanks again for your help.
