Surnames: Thompson, Harding, Smith
I am looking for decendants of John and Sarah (nee Harding) Thompson, of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
John would have been born o/a 1850
One daughter I am aware of; Isabelle Thompson, born in 1880 in Kensington (then known as Long River) Prince Edward Island.
Isobel married Harry Smith of Shediac, New Brunswick o/a 1879, and they produced four children.
Vina (1900) Lucy Rebbeca (1902) Leslie Amos (1904) and Villah (1907)
Any information of John Thompson or Sarah Harding is appreciated.

I am searching the Thompsons of PEI as well. John Thompson b. 1858 married a Sarah Francis Harding in New London PEI. They had 5 childrenIsabella, Anne Marie, Elizabeth Jane, William Ernest and Mary Lottie.
Sarah Francis died in Spring Valley in 1892 and the rest of the family left in the late 1890's. John was last known to be living in Shediac NB.
The road block I have hit is John's father "Thomas Thompson" date and place of birth unknown and wifes name unknown.
John Thompson also had several brothers and an unknown daughter (known as Mrs John McLean living in San Jose California). Their names were Andrew b. 1853, Thomas ( last known to be in Michigan) , William ( last known to be in Kensington) and Johnson (last known to be in Moncton)
I am a direct decendant of Andrew's oldest son John William.

Hi Edson,

I responded to your other post and was most encouraged to find this one about the Thompson family of Shediac!

I have found nothing but brick walls trying to locate the corresponding family members for any of my Kent County surnames in PEI, including Thompson, and so just recently, began searching in Nova Scotia and elsewhere in NB and it does look more promising than PEI.

There are a couple of Thomson families that seem to be connected to PEI but pieces are missing. The Island Register lists descendants of James and Helen Thomson and one is William MacGregor Thomson who married Margaret Miller

WILLIAM MACGREGOR THOMSON was born October 10, 1824 in North Tryon, Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and died in Rexton, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada. Buried in St. Andrew's United Church Cemetery, Rexton, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada Occupation: Farmer He married MARGARET MILLER. Buried in St. Andrew's United Church Cemetery, Rexton, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada
William Mcgregor Thompson married Margaret Miller, May 20, 1847, Dundas Parish, Witnessed by John Muiller, John Powell

They have only 2 children listed on the Island Register

1)SARAH THOMSON, b. North Tryon, Prince County, Prince Edward Island; m. LEWIS BAKER WOOD, 1865, North Tryon, Prince County, Prince Edward Island. Occupation: Merchant, they resided in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.

2)MARGARET/MAY/MAGGIE THOMSON, age 27, born abt 1854 in PEI from the 1881 Census, b. 1853, age 38, born in PEI, father born PEI, mother born in Ireland, Presbyterian on the 1891 Census, Richibucto, born June 26, 1852, PEI, of Scotch origin from the 1901 Census, she died in 1901, Buried in St. Andrew's United Church Cemetery, Rexton, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada she married JAMES B. I think they had more than 2 children ......

Next on this list is Henry...

HENRY THOMPSON was born June 10, 1842 in New Brunswick, Canada, and died Aft. 1901 in Ford's Mills, Kent Co., New Brunswick, Canada. He married JULIA ANN MCDOUGALL February 04, 1871, daughter of ARCHIBALD MCDOUGAL and SARAH GRAHAM.
We know Henry and Julia's descendants and Henry's mother who was Mary Jane Marshall wife of Garcon Young but we don't know who was Henry's father?

and just to put a twist on this little mystery...
RUFINO OLIQUE THOMPSON (HENRY1) was born March 20, 1876 in Ford's Mill, Kent, New Brunswick, Canada and died 1953 in Salisbury, New Brunswick, Canada. He married LOUISA ISABELLA LAWSON October 14, 1903 in Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada14, daughter of ROBERT LAWSON and MARGARET THOMPSON. Margaret was born 9 Jul 1859 in Northern Ireland and we don't know how she met Robert Lawson or which family she is connected to but somehow she ended up here and was known to have an Irish accent so we are guessing she arrived here as an adult. Otherwise there seems to be some connection between Margaret and the next family we can't place but we're not sure what that relationship might be....

JAMES THOMPSON born about 1814 in Londonderry, Ireland who came to this country in his 29th year, a resident of Bass River until the time of his death 22 October 1891, at age 82. he married Christianne Fearon born 1818 in Richibucto, they raised a large family - descendants are known.

living next door to James and Christiannne is found...

TIMPSON, Robert (Nelson?) born about 1814 in Belfast Ireland, Pres. Farmer noted on the 1861 Census, Widow and head of household on the 1871 Census at age 60, both of his parents were born in Ireland, His wife was Lucinda THOMPSON born about 1793 Londonderry, Ireland, She was Presbyterian and died before 1871, she is believed to have been a relative (sister?) of James Thompson who lived next door with his wife Christianne Fearon. Robert and Lucinda were married June 3, 1845 St. Mary’s CofE, Richibucto, Witnessed by James Thompson, Samuel Robertson

Believe it or not.... these Thompson/Thomsons' above are all from my "unrelated to me as far as I know" file!!!!

My own Thompson family is also of Irish origin and coincidentally it is a John Joseph Thompson born about 1804 Ireland and his wife Sarah Unknown born 1808 Tyrone, Ireland who is my brickwall point. He petitioned and received our land grant in 1840 but it may have been earlier because his namesake son is said to be born on the property 1834.

Children are
1)MARY ELIZA born 1830 in Richibucto, NB who married William Fearon and raised a large family in this area all known to me, he was brother of Christianne married to James Thompson above.

2)LUCINDA ANN born or baptized on Sept 9th 1832, in Richibucto, SAM BACON, Offic. Priest, she was married May 1st 1849 to JOHN MORTON, born 1829 and died in 1894, we don't know exactly when Lucinda died but it was before the 1861 Census and after 1859 - we don't know where she is buried.

3)JOHN JOSEPH THOMPSON JUNIOR, possibly born March 3rd? about 1834, Bass River, New Brunswick, he married Margaret Elizabeth Graham daughter of John and Ann Graham

4)SARAH JANE THOMPSON, born 1836 namesake of her mother, married DAVID LAWSON on September 4, 1855 Richibucto, Witnessed by GEORGE LAWSON and ISABELLA WHITAKER., they moved to St. John NB.

5)GEORGE HENRY THOMPSON, born March 15, 1839, Kent Co. NB., married Lucy Ann Ward - this is my direct line!!

6)DAVID THOMPSON, born 1841 in NB., is our mystery son! He was found in Puget Sound, Washington at the time of the reading of John Joseph Junior's will in 1892 but we have absolutely no additional info on him after the 1861 Census where he's listed as brother to John Joseph Jr.

7)MATILDA THOMPSON, born April 4, 1844, NB., married JOHN HENRY GRAHAM, who was born February 3, 1827, Kouchibouguac, NB., son of John and Ann Graham.

JOHN GRAHAM SENIOR and ANN were married 1818 Miramichi, NB. so that's where my search on Thompson's has led so far... not all of the above may be correct... there are tons of POSSIBLY connections so I'm very interested to compare notes with other researchers.
Thanks,
Elaine

I too am looking for a John Thompson, mine however hails from Galway Ireland I believe. He was born about 1845 and married a woman by the name of Ellen Murphy. They had at least two children, a daughter Helena who was born in 1881 and a son Robert born about 1888. Helena emigrated to Boston at the turn of the century (1900) and her younger brother followed in 1910. Helena is my great grandmother and I know very little more about her. She married a John Humphreys Harrington who was born in Cork in 1874 and also emigrated to Boston in the 1890's. They married in Boston probably in 1901.

My first reaction, Elaine, is to offer a bit on James B. Stymiest, in the family group below; to which I have added some of your information. As for the rest, nothing immediate comes to mind. If opportunity allows, I may look this over more carefully to see if anything occurs to me.

Thomas

16. PHOEBE URQUHART b. Tabusintac 24JUL1818, d. Fairville, City of Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 10JAN1915 (or 6JUN1914), m. Newcastle, NB 26OCT1839 FRANCIS PEABODY STYMIEST [J3] (b. ca. 1816, d. Rexton, Kent Co., NB 10MAR1894), s/o Benjamin Gerritt and Charlotte Mary (Hierlihy) Stymiest.
In 1881, in Richibucto, Kent Co., NB, Peabody was age 65 and a farmer, and Phoebe was age 62. The whole family was b. NB and C. Presbyterian. Children were: Maria L. (38), Susan A. (26) and Benjamin (18.)
In Richibucto, Kent Co., 1901, ‘Pheobie Stymest’ lived with her grandson, James P. Wood (b. 19AUG1866.) Another such grandson would appear to be John H. Wood b. Richibucto 13MAY1863, s/o James M. and Margaret (Stymiest) Wood. It is not clear whether this Margaret might be the same as Maria; but it seems not all of their children are listed below. Other examples are a Peter Stymest of Kingston, Kent Co., NB who m. Maggie____; and a William Stymest who m. Mary Priscilla Thomson. These may well be children of Peabody and Phoebe as well.
children:
161. MARIA L. STYMIEST b. ca. 1843
162. JAMES B. STYMIEST (assumed to be Peabody’s son), b. 25MAY1845, d. 1929, m. MARGARET (MAY/MAGGIE) THOMPSON (THOMSON) (b. PEI 26JUN1852, d. Mill Creek, Kent Co., NB 10JAN1902 (1901 on headstone) age 48 years.) Both are buried in St. Andrew’s United Church Cem., Rexton, Kent Co., NB; originally Presbyterian. He and his family are in Richibucto, Kent Co., NB in 1901; when one son was Francis P. Stymiest.
Maggie is said by Elaine (Ancestry.com, Thompson board, 2JAN2005) to be the d/o William MacGregor and Margaret (Miller) Thomson. William was b. North Tyron, Prince Co., PEI 10OCT1824 and d. Rexton, Kent Co., NB. Margaret was b. Ireland ca. 1829.
children:
1621. PHOEBE STYMIEST b. ca. 1878 (in 1891 census)
1622. MATILDA STYMISET b. ca. 1880 (in 1891 census)
1623. LOUISA STYMIEST (in 1891 census)
1624. LAMAR STYMIEST b. 12NOV1883
1625. JAMES STYMIEST b. 8OCT1885; possibly the James Ambrose Stymest who m. Kent Co., NB 25DEC1917 Agnes Ruth Richards. Also possibly the James A. Stymiest who d. Kent Co., NB 18OCT1954.
1626. JENNIE ORLENE STYMIEST b. Mill Creek, Kent Co., NB 4JUN1888, m. Kent Co., NB 29MAY1918 CHARLES A. SMITH
1627. FRANCIS J. P. STYMIEST b. Mill Creek, Kent Co., NB 20OCT1891
1628. BENJAMIN ALFRED STYMIEST b. Mill Creek, Kent Co., NB 7FEB1895, d. Mill Creek, Kent Co., NB 21APR1897 age 2 years

Hi Bob!
Thanks for the tips, I haven't found any of my Thompson's in PEI. There seems to be at least 2 groups of Thompson's coming from Ireland.

The first group arrived between 1803 and 1819. They were Church of England or Protestant in religion and first settled in Mirimichi, moving throughout the province following the Great Fire of 1825.

The next group of Thompson's arrived with the "Irish Famine" in the 1840's and were mostly Catholic in religion.

My Thompson's and I think your's too Bob, were both part of the first group coming from Mirimichi. They came to develop farmlands from the newly cleared forests. I think the forests had either already been cleared by the shipbuilding industry of the late 1700's or were still covered with trees and that is the case with my Thompson land grant. It seems the land was transferred around a lot between these early settlers and known shipbuilders/lumbering industries of the time.

Port of entry to Canada is still not known.

Hi Elaine,

I was reading through your information on the Thompson's you've found in your research.
My family isn't from PEI, we are in Ontario.. but some of the information and names looked familiar.

One paragraph caught my attention....

"My own Thompson family is also of Irish origin and coincidentally it is a John Joseph Thompson born about 1804 Ireland and his wife Sarah Unknown born 1808 Tyrone, Ireland who is my brickwall point. He petitioned and received our land grant in 1840 but it may have been earlier because his namesake son is said to be born on the property 1834."

My Thompson family is of Irish origin as well:

1. John Thompson (date unknown)

2. Thomas Thompson b. abt 1825 (Co. Tyrone)
married: Nancy Agnes Andrew (b. 1827)
October 1852 in Aghoghill, Co. Antrim

Thomas came to Canada in the 1870/80's with only his children:
Ann, John, Thomas, Andrew, Henry, Sarah Jane, Elizabeth and James.
I have found their marriage and a birth record for Henry from Co. Antrim.

My Thompson line is also from Ireland and settled in Ontario, Canada. My Joseph was born about 1800 in Armagh, Ireland, his wife was Isabella Rutherford. His father was John Thompson. Joseph immigrated with at least 2 brothers David(born about 1816), Samuel and William. I have been trying to figure out where they first landed when they arrived in Canada. It is possible they are connected to your PEI Thompsons and spread out from there.
