The challenge is this: Can you find out when or where or what happened to Andrew Grant.

He was born in 1876 in Victoria under the name Henry Depan. Apparently his name was changed to Andrew Grant when he was young. His parents are John Grant and Emily Thompson. In 1901 his youngest sibling was born where it is listed that he is 24yrs old and still alive however when his father dies in 1929, he is listed as deceased. Meaning that he died somewhere between 1901 and 1929. To date I have not been able to find any trace of his death. Can anyone help?

Hi,
Just trying to organise some people before trying to look too much..

The siblings to John were born to Emily/Emelia/Amelia THOMPSON and John DEPEAN from 1894 till 1901 at Point Nepean.

I would be double checking his birth details..IF his father was GRANT and mother Emily THOMPSON then he was probably born Andrew GRANT...

I cannot see any births 1889 to 1913 for GRANT children with mother Emily THOMPSON or DEPAN children.

John Grant was born John DePina or Depean, or a variant of the name. He was a portugese sailor and apparently the ships captain had trouble in identifying the men by their native names so he gave them english surnames. So John Depina became John Grant. Emily (Amelia) Thompson and John Grant had 14 children:

Joaquin and Emily had the following children:

Emily Depenie (1875) #22546
Henry (Andrew) Depan (1876) #22822
John Depean (1878) #15648 ????
Johana (Katherine) Depene (1880) #15576
Elizabeth Depena (1882) #9120
Alice Depina (1884) #4062
Mary Amelia Christina Depina (1885) #19635
Georgina Agnes Depina (1887) #30010
John Albert Depean (1889) #24884
Matilda Depean (1891) #26361
Walter William Grant (1894) #23360
Frank Depean Grant (1897) #13550
Frederick William Depean (1899) #21183
May Depean (1901) #13530

Andrew was educated 1/329 2/1885 - 1885 at Sorrento School, Vic. Was 9 in 1885, registered at school as Andrew Grant.

Hi,
If he was portugese he would have had to become naturalised..A ships Captain cannot give them different names to live by in Australia.. (maybe he called them different names on the ship as he couldn't pronounce the names,,BUT he couldn't give them different names to go by)
On naturalisation most people anglicised their names..

The #23884 for John Albert,,just lists him as Albert DEPEAN
Walter William #23360 is registered as DEPEAN (not Grant)
Frank #13550 is also listed as DEPEAN.

I would say after naturalisation their name was anglicised to GRANT.

I can see Joaquine De Pina arriving in NSW 14 JULY 1874..

OH,,
I forgot to say,,
Maybe try finding him in Electoral Rolls..

I cannot see a death that fits up to 1920,,,so maybe someone will check deaths after that.

Hi,
There is an Andrew GRANT died NSW 1901 with parents listed as John and Imila..(I think Imila is incorrect and thought it might be Emelia/Amelia,,which is listed on some of the childrens births)

There are also De Pina's listed on NSW Electoral Rolls.

As far as I know he wasn't naturalised because he jumped ship before it entered port
