James and Jemima Justice CHAFFIN were m. 1836 in I believe, Lawrence County, KY. The 1870 census of Lawrence Co. lists them and several children and a mother, Mary Chaffin. My ggrandmother, Margaret Elizabeth Chaffin was b. 1878 in Lawrence Co., KY and married William Jefferson Newman in Forney, Kaufman Co., TX in 1895. Don't know where or when either James or Jemima died, but I suspect it was either in Kaufman or Dallas Co., TX, or maybe even in Tillman Co., OK.
Would love to have any info you have on them. Thanks a lot! Ann Harlow fharlow@mail.wcc.net

Thanks for the info on the marriage of James and Jemima CHAFFIN. Would love to have any further stuff on Jemima's family. I know that she and James were in Lawrence Co. KY at least from 1870 when they appear in the census with some of their children until my ggrandmother, Margaret Elizabeth Chaffin was b. in 1878. The next I have found them they were in Kaufman Co., TX when Maggie married in 1895. Wish I could find out when and where they died.

Ann, Sorry but I don't think I have the CHAFFIN you're looking for. I still have some searching to do through a bunch of papers and I will let you know if I come across anything. But I am a little confused, I saw a 1870, Lawrence Co., KY census that lists a JAMES CHAFFIN, age 44,
and EMILY, age 34 with several children with a MARY CHAFFIN age 79 living with them. Is this the same family you are referring to? Was EMILY a misprint? One more mystery to solve!! Anyway, I will continue to look because the odds are, there has to be a connection to your CHAFFIN'S and mine since everyone was related to each other then anyway.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help. Brenda

In a posting dated back in 1998, I have James Chaffin married to Jemima Justice. My James Chaffin was married to Jemima Short. Also, have found out that according to Lawrence Co. Kentucky birth records, Margaret Elizabeth Chaffin's mother was not Jemima, but Mary Jane Chaffin, her oldest "sister." No father is listed. My grandmother, daughter of Margaret Elizabeth Chaffin and William Jefferson Newman, used to tell me that she had Indian blood, and I wonder if Maggie's father could have been Native American, since that is the only unknown link I have discovered so far.
