Death & Burial - Florence Mabel Funnelle Vaughan

Our great grandmother, Florence Mabel Funnelle Vaughan (nee Newman) lived in Canning Town but actually died in the West Ham Mental Hospital (aka West Ham Borough Asylum) Ilford in 1929. We are trying to discover where she is buried and have tried both West Ham Cemetery and the East London Cemetery at Plaistow with no success. If a person had no known family to claim them and the Asylum was responsible for their burial, would anyone know if they tended to use any specific cemetery?

Thank you for the info re death certificate. Now we are hoping to find the most likely place of her burial. Perhaps a local Ilford historian or anyone who may have local Ilford knowledge might have some ideas?

If you obtain the death certificate for Florence Mabel Funnelle Vaughan this will give details of her last usual address and it may be possible to find news paper entries of were she has been laid to rest.
Councils of the area may have records also.

These are the Romford registration details and area's it covers which can be found at

Thank you. We know her home address at the time of her death was 96 Dale Road, Canning Town E16 (probably lodging there) but we have checked the local paper, The Stratford Express, for both a death notice and/or obituary but there was nothing. There are also no records kept at West Ham Mental Hospital, Ilford (now Goodmayes Hospital), where she died, as they apparently 'work to Government guidelines' and destroy all their patient records after 20 years or so. We therefore have no idea whether she would have been buried in the Canning Town or the Ilford area but suspect she probably had a paupers burial organised by either the Mental Hospital or the local authority.

Hi,

Although you now her address you need the death certificate so that you can confirm that this is so. For even though that may be her registered address it will state her actual place of death and who registered it. That person may be the key.

Her husband Benjamin H Vaughan died in 1922, she may be with him.
These are his registered details
Death Mar 1922 Vaughan Benjamin H 57 W. Ham 4a 194

Also the marriage details which you may have..
Marriage Jun 1913
Newman Florence M F Vaughan Willesden 3a 479
Vaughan Benjamin H Newman Willesden 3a 479 Middlesex

His twin sister’s family may have the answer ( Margaret ).

Thanks for the suggestions but it was from the death certificate that we actually got Florence's address and the death was registered by a J Harvey Cuthbert, occupier, West Ham Mental Hospital, Ilford so that was no help!

Regarding the death of her husband Benjamin H Vaughan, I don't think the death registered in 1922 was him, as his second name was Henry but there was also a Benjamin Hobson Vaughan shown as living in West Ham on the 1911 census and Florence's death certificate states 'wife of Benjamin Vaughan' (not widow) with his occupation as 'occupation unknown'. This would indicate to me that he was still alive at the time of her death in 1929 but, as he was a merchant seaman, he was probably away at sea which is why they would have no details.

Also, thank you for the marriage info but we do have their marriage certificate.

The one thing that does intrique me is where have you found a twin sister for Benjamin called Margaret? In all my hunting I haven't even been able to definitely find him on the birth registers or the census records, let alone with a twin sister! If you could let me know where you found this I would be very grateful.
