Classification: Biography
Surnames: Currier, Muchamore, Down, Hutchins, Barber
The Isles of Shoals are a group of small islands and tidal ledges situated approximately 10 miles off the east coast of the United States, straddling the border of the states of New Hampshire and Maine. They include Star Island, Smuttynose Island, and Appledore (originally known as Hog Island). The town of Gosport, NH is located on Star Island.

>>>>>>>>>>>>Jeffrey Currier was the ancestor of the Isles of Shoals branch of the Currier family. The earliest mention found of him is dated March 1665/6, when Jeff: CURRYER was a subscriber to Mr. Moody's salary in Portsmouth, NH. On 15 Feb 1668/9, one acre of land on Great Island, Portsmouth (now New Castle, NH), was granted to him. On 18 Mar 1669, "Jefferey CURRIEHAIRE of Portsmouth in Piscataqua River, Fisherman," bought of Edward HOLLAND of the Isles of Shoals, Fisherman, a dwelling house on Hog Island on the Isles of Shoals. In 1671 Jeffrey CURRIER gave a deposition in court at Portsmouth and stated that he was about 36 years old, which would make his birth year 1635. From 1670 to 1699 or later he was a fisherman or "fishing master" on the islands and at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. He apparently had at least 3 sons: John, Richard, and Caleb. Good records were not kept on the islands until the 1720's, so although knowledge is lacking about Jeffrey Currier's immediate family, the following all appear to be the families of his descendants.

Listed as "the child of Samuell & Sary* CURRIER" is:
Samuell CURRIER born March ye 29, 1737.
(footnote for the above Samuell: "The church book records the baptism, 17 Apr. 1737, of "Samuel Son of Samuel CURRIER & of Abigail* his wife." (REGISTER, vol. 66, p. 153.). Samuel CURRIER lived on Hog Island, so that unfavorable weather might have delayed the baptism." [it's unclear whether the mother was named Sary or Abigail]).
(another footnote says that Sarah, wife of Ambrose DOWN[S] on the same page at http://books.google.com/books?id=IsMMAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA243, was probably Sarah MUCHMORE, b. Gosport, Rockingham, NH 10 Jan 1710, daughter of John MUCHMORE and Ann ____, and that she and Ambrose DOWN[S] had 8 children from 1729-1744. The footnote says she was probably the sister of John, Richard, and William MUCHMORE, was mentioned in her brother John's will, and "presuming this is true", she married (2) Geoffrey CURRIER in 1754.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>(returning to the records from the minister):

Note: The above records show 9 children of Jeffrey Currier and his wife Marcy or Mercy. This Jeffrey or Geoffrey Currier
was probably born about 1692 (estimated based upon the birth year of his first child). He was probably a grandson of the
earlier Jeffrey CURRIER (1635-1699) of the Isles of Shoals, and is theorized to be the son of John since his eldest son was
named John. He married Marcy or Mercy ___ about 1717.
Known children of Jeffrey & Marcy/Mercy:
1. John Currier born 3 Mar 1718 at Gosport, Rockingham Co., NH;
2. Jeffrey Currier born 19 July 1719 at Gosport, Rockingham Co., NH;
3. Sarah Currier born 10 Sep 1721 at Gosport, Rockingham Co., NH;
7. Samuel Currier christened 27 Oct 1728 at Rye, Rockingham Co., NH;
10. Joseph Currier baptized 1 Apr 1733 at Isles of Shoals, Rockingham Co., NH;
11. Mary Currier baptized 4 May 1735 at Isles of Shoals, Rockingham Co., NH;
12. Edward Currier baptized 25 Sep 1737 at Isles of Shoals, Rockingham Co., NH;
13. Amos Currier baptized 16 Dec 1739 at Isles of Shoals, Rockingham Co., NH;
14. Mercy Currier baptized 15 Apr 1744 at Isles of Shoals, Rockingham Co., NH.

>>>>Jeffrey & Mercy Currier apparently lived on the mainland between the years 1721-1733, and probably had four or five more children whose births or christening records have not been found. I have estimated that they had a total of 14 children.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>In the marriage entries at Isles of Shoals, it says:
"Geoffery Currier, widower, & Sarah Downe, widow, were married May 28th, 1754."
But the children baptized in 1756 (Samuel), 1759 (William), and 1765 (John) on Isles of Shoals to Geoffery/Jeffry Currier Junr. & Sarah his wife, do not appear to be the children of this Geoffery Currier, "widower" (b. ca. 1692) & Sarah Downe, "widow" (b. 1710). Rather, they are stated to be the children of Jeffrey Currier "junior": i.e. the Jeffrey born July 19, 1719 at Gosport to Jeffrey Currier & Marcy. Apparently Marcy/Mercy died before 1754, and the senior Jeffrey (b. ca. 1692) remarried to Sarah (Muchmore) Downe, who was born in 1710. She had eight children from her first marriage, but they had no more children together. Meanwhile Jeffrey "junior" had apparently moved to Boston for a while, because extracted marriage records for Boston, MA show a marriage of Jeffry CURRIER to Mary HUTCHINS, 9 Nov 1747 at Boston (marriage performed by the Rev. Samuel Cooper, see http://books.google.com/books?id=Iufi5eVXCGoC&pg=PA247). A daughter Mary, d/o Geoffry Currier, was christened at the Brattle Street Church in Boston on 20 Nov 1748 (see http://books.google.com/books?id=Iufi5eVXCGoC&pg=PA172). The mother Mary Hutchins Currier apparently died by 1752, because Jeffery CURRIER married Sarah BARBER 26 Mar 1752 at Boston (see "Massachusetts Marriages" database on Ancestry.com, and records of "The New North Church, Boston"). I am guessing that these were both the same Jeffrey CURRIER, namely the Jeffrey born in 1719 at Gosport. A baby, Sarah Currier, was christened at the Brattle Street Church in Boston 14 Jan 1753, listed as daughter of Sarah Currier (see http://books.google.com/books?id=Iufi5eVXCGoC&pg=PA174). Since Jeffrey Currier had married Sarah Barber 26 Mar 1752 in Boston, presumably she was the mother and Jeffrey was the father. It seems strange that both parents aren't listed, but perhaps Jeffrey was away on a sea voyage so only the mother brought the child for baptism. Some other baptismal records appear on the same page listing only a father's name, while some list both parents....therefore perhaps this particular pastor recorded only the names of parents who actually came to the baptism. Jeffrey & his wife Sarah Barber Currier apparently moved back to Isles of Shoals, where three more children were
born to them in 1756, 1759, and 1765. They probably moved back to the mainland after this. Essex [County] Massachusetts Probate Records, 1638-1840 (an Ancestry.com database) shows that Jeffry Currier, mariner, died intestate. His residence at death had been Newburyport, Essex Co., MA, and the probate was filed 3 May 1797.
