Hi Susan: In looking at Peter Minard Mastin's Family Tree. As you know, it doesn't list a mother or father. The reason I'm responding to your query is my question as to whether Peter Minard Mastin might be a brother of Catherine (Mastin) MacDonald. In the 1851 Census for Hallowell Twp, Prince Edward Co., Ont., Catherine is married to Daniel MacDonald and Catherine lists her age as 55 yrs (b. 1796 in Canada). In the 1861 Census Catherine is living with son Robert and Sarah (Harris) MacDonald (Daniel must have died between 1851 and 1861 Census). Catherine lists her age as 67 yrs
(b 1794 in Upper Canada). In the 1871 Census Catherine is living with son Robert and Sarah (Harris) MacDonald and lists her age as 78 yrs (b. 1793 in U.S.) . She also listed her origin as German. Catherine died between 1871 and 1881 Census. Due to her listing her birth place as U.S. in 1871 Census I am wondering if she is a sister of Peter Minard Mastin. I should add that her marriage to Daniel was about 1813/1814 as their first born was in 1815 in Hallowell). I have been unable to find their marriage or actual death dates, but as they say, "hope springs eternal"!

For your info: in 1740 the Ulster County Militia, New York in the Revolution lists Enlisted Men in the First Regiment as:
Cornelius C. Masten, Daniel Masten, Hendrick Masten, Johannis C. Masten, Johannis E. Masten, Daniel Mastin.

In the 1740 Ulster Co. Militia, New York Enlisted Men in the Third Regiment are: John C. Masten, Joseph Masten, Robert Masten.

I truly believe that Catherine Mastin was born in ? Co. or Ulster Co., New York along with some of the men who came to Prince Edward Co. in the late 1700's or early 1800's. She probably came with her father. Who are her parents????

I've spent hours pouring over any baptismal, marriage, and other records I can find = and I feel like I am no closer to figuring out this today then I was weeks ago. Not sure if this helps but I have a
Bernard Masten that was born sometime between 1799 and 1804 based on his age given in the 1861 Census of Hillier Township, PE County, Ontario and the 1851 Census of PE County. I presume that this is the same Bernard Masten listed as married to Electa Knapp (1806-1894) in the webpage of the "Kanadianmasten" by Lynda Anne Mastin Payne. I also found that Electa Mastin was listed as 45 years old in the 1851 Census of PE County (p. 10).

Here's another bit of information

Eleanor married Minard Mastin, son of Jonathan Mastin and Mary LEAVENS, on 1 Nov 1836 in Marysburgh Twp., PE Co., Ontario, Canada. Minard was born 1801 in Canada. He died in PE Co., Ontario, Canada.
They had the following children:
Eliza Mastin was born 1841 in West Lake, Hallowell Twp, PE Co., Ontario, Canada.
Guy Henry Mastin was born 5 Jun 1839 and died 1916.
Gilbert E. MASTIN was born 1847 and died 1922.
Catherine A. MASTIN was born 1844 in West Lake, Hallowell Twp, PE Co., Ontario, Canada.

I know how you feel,,That wall gets pretty high. I think we have to look back farther - to the mid 1700's For the father of these "young" ones ! But info in those times were not well kept. , perhaps Peter, Cornelius, Jonathon, Amos, John, Ezekiel and Aaron,,, were all brothers. Every
bro, had 10 or 12 children, so multiply that ,by seven,,
,,, No wonder it's hard to locate our lost ancestor. One day we'll have a big"surprise" and it will be there. I hope !

I was thinking of ordering the wills I can get from Ulster County - figuring that they will at least name all the children. What does anyone thing? There's more than what I am allowed to order (they place a limit) - is anyone willing to try to split up the list and costs? This way when we get the wills we can all share the information. I can easily scan the information I get and send it around. Let me know what you think and if you think it is worth it - if so, I'll post the info I have.

I agree, though, it is so hard. So many kids, grandkids...I've been filling in lots of pieces and my file keeps getting bigger and bigger. Also so many names that are the same.

But you're right - they had to have parents. Its just who? And where is the information? Most of the Mastens had a significant amount of land, so they had to have wills? And they all attended churches, so there has to be baptismal records.

I have a ton of information printed out - at this point, I am going to spend time trying to sort it and see if I can add notes to the ever expanding family free. As soon as I have done that, I'll post the file - perhaps someone would like to take a look at it and comment. Let me know. And thanks for keeping in touch.

I live north of Calgary Alberta. and I'm over 80 years old. So do not travel well, any more . If you have knowledge of where to get the American info, it would be a great asset.

Possible breakthrough - email me directly if you wish, but here it is.

I found a Barent Masten who is listed as living in Beekman, Dutchess County, NY in 1800 (NY Gen. Records). He is also listed in the 1790 Federal Census for the same location as having 1 free white male >16, 3 free white males <16, and 2 females (incl. wife) and under the name Bernard.

The Baptismal record of Caughnawaga Reformed Church (1758-1899) lists a Barent Mastin as married to Hester McGraw. The name of the child is not provided, but he/she was baptized Jan. 3, 1792. The church is located in the present-day town of Fonda, NY.

I also find that a Barent Martin (b. est. 1749-1778, d. est. 1803-1863) as married to Hester McGraw. They had a daughter Susan B. Martin, born in 1800 in Florida Township, Montgomery County, NY. Susan is said to have died on 17 May 1870 in Rose Hall, ON, Canada. Susan had a sister, Mary. (OneWorldTree on Ancestry.com). Susan married
Martin Richard Pettingell (b.21 Dec 1791 in Florida, Montgomery, NY; died: 24 Sep 1861 in Rose Hall, [ON, Canada).

I am going to research the locations and will post this shortly.
