Descendants of Pugh Price

Generation No. 1

1. PUGH1 Price (JOHNA, JOHNB, JOHNC, THOMASD)1 was born Abt. 1700 in Henrico Co., VA, and died Abt. 1775 in Prince Edward Co., VA. He married (1) SARAH THORNTON Abt. 1721 in Henrico Co., VA. She was born 1707, and died 1730. He married (2) TABITHA BARROWS2 Abt. 1733 in Henrico Co., VA. She was born 1714, and died 1749. He married (3) JERUSHA PENICK3 21 Sep 1750 in Amelia Co., VA, daughter of WILLIAM PENICK and JUDITH PATE. She was born 1731, and died 1783 in Prince Edward Co., VA.

Notes for Pugh PRICE:
Seeking info on Pugh Price who resided in Prince Edward Co. 1747-75;wife, Jerusha (PENICK); son James Price who resided in Prince Edward Co. 1747-1812; and Elizabeth (Ransom) Price, wife of James, who moved to Chariton Co. Missouri about 1832.

************

Pugh Price Sr. and his three wives had 17 children who lived to legal age. Pugh, son of John III and Jane Pugh Price, married Sarah Thornton circa 1724, they had four children William, Sarah, Mary and Jane. He married Tabitha Barrow circa 1733. The children from this marriage were Pugh II, Michael, Phebe, and Tabitha. The first and second marriages were in Henrico County. The third marriage was to Jerusha PENICK, daughter of William PENICK, on September 21, 1750. Penick lived near Dowdy's Corner in Amelia County. There were eight children from this marriage; all after Pugh was 60 years old, Charles, John, Daniel, Josiah, James, Frances, Judith and Pugh Williamson.

The home that Pugh Price established with Jerusha was about two miles northwest of Hampden Sydney. At this time Prince Edward County had not been formed.

William Price, the oldest son of Pugh Sr., married Mary Morton and was prominent in the formation of Prince Edward County. Pugh II was granted land by his father and built a home known as Locust Grove. Pugh II moved to Kentucky circa 1789. The Price land holdings in the 1700stotaled several thousand acres and were located between Hampden Sydney and Tuggle including the Hard Times tract. Most of the family moved either west or south before 1830. Pugh Williamson, the youngest son of Pugh Sr. moved to Missouri. His son, General Sterling Price was educated at Hampden Sydney College, became the governor of Missoui in 1852 and was commissioned Major General in the Confederate Army in 1862. Charles and William Price's families remained in Prince Edward County.

Charles circa 1754, the eldest son of Pugh and Jerusha PENICK, married Ann Haskins, daughter of Benjamin Haskins in 1778. Their son, Benjamin Haskins Price, was the grandfather of Rev. Benjamin Luther Price, author of "John Price, the Emigrant, Jamestown Colony, 1720 with some of his descendants." John, Charles II, William and Ann were children of Charles' second marriage to Elizabeth Fowlkes. John, after his father's death, built a house known as Fort Hill circa 1815. This house still remains in the county having been fully restored by W.E. Jamerson. William also built a house on his part of the property, but sometime before the Civil War, it was dismantled and moved to Cocks Crossing just east of Prospect. It was still standing until 2005 when a new house was built on the same location.

Charles II moved to Stafford County in 1779 and married Elizabeth Fulcher in that year. He became a wheelwright and blacksmith during his time in Stafford County, possibly at the Falmouth Iron Works inFauquier County. The children were Thomas Jefferson, James W., Martha, Sintha, Emily, Lucy, Elizabeth, Charles S. and Ebenezer. Before 1814 the family moved to Buckingham County still following the wheelwright and blacksmithing trades. All the sons were taught the trade. Charles II was mustered into the Army from Buckingham County and served six months in the War of 1812. He and Elizabeth both applied and received Bounty Land in Missouri for his service in this war. It appears that this land was claimed and sold. Charles II and Elizabeth moved to Prince Edward County to be with their son, Thomas. Charles died in 1851 and Elizabeth sometime after 1860.

Thomas Jefferson, son of Charles II, bought 242 acres from the Hill Estate near Elam in 18. He married Armeady Hubbard, the daughter of Benjamin Hubbard in 1826 amnd they had ten children: Thomas Jr., Joel, George, William a., John P., James, Charles R., Martha, Bellezara, and Alexander P. He married (2) Almedia Warriner ca 1866 and married (3) ca 1885 Queen V. Dickerson. The Civil War took a severe toll on this family. The fact that times were very difficult is evidenced by the deeds showing that the Thomas J. Price farm was sold three times on Prince Edward County Couthouse steps between 1873 and 1889. It was kept in the family only by personal bonds of his three sons, Charles R., William A. and Alexander P. Price. Much of the Price properties were lost through bankruptcy and forced sales during the reconstruction years. William A. retained and farmed a portion then passed it to his son Robert Lee.

Alexander P. married Alice Baker Irving on March 14, 1872. Their children were: Elijah, Myrtle, Hattie, Peyton, Annie Pearl, Rosa, John, Grover, Margie, Willie Claude, and Mammie. The whole family moved to Newport News, Virginia around 1900. George unmarried moved to Lunenburg Co., Joel moved to Oklahoma. Thomas J. Jr., William A., John P. and Charles R. remained in the county.

Notes for JOHN Price, OF FORT HILL PLANTATION:
Fort Hill Plantation

The original land which Fort Hill Plantation resides on was part of an original tract of 20,000+ acres owned by Samuel Wallace in 1754 deeded 618 acres to Robert B yrd (Bird). The heirs or Robert Byrd (Bird) Williamson and Philemon Byrd (Bird) then deeded a section to Pugh Price in 1763.

Pugh Price added other acreage from the Wallace tract. This new tract was sequestered by Pugh Price to Charles Price in 1777. Charles, in turn, deeded his land to his sons John, Charles and William Price, with John eventually having th elone possessioin and built what is now Fort Hill Plantation.

John Price, upon his death, left his land to his wife Nancy, who added to the tract of land, dividing it up getween her two sons, Richard W. Price and Charles A. Price, with Charles receiving the house. Charles' wife's (Fannie Priscilla Wilsoh) family added acreage on the north and south. Although the Prices sold some acreage to their children, the heirs sold the land to Frank Kreig, who owned the house from approximately 1904 to 1913, with Bessie Glaze purchasing it in 1913.

The Fort Hill home was passed down through the Glaze family until Bill and Ellen Jamerson purchased the home in 1974 and restored it. David and Mary Kay Gates (sons David Heath, Patrick and Matthew) purchased the restored home in 1996 and are presently residing in the home.

The Georgian home is presently situated on 288+ acres, featuring a ballast brick set in Flemish bond; the only one of its kind in the county with the exception of those found on the nearby Hampden-Sydney College campus. Fort Hill's inner lining of brick was kilned on the property, with the outer brick purchased in England, coming to America as ballast on sailing vessels crossing the Atlantic. The three stories of the original house contain six large rooms with the original pine floors, in addition to the English basement. The original two story servants' quarters and kitchen are [presently renovated into a guest cottage with the original smoke house sitll remaing.

Iron Cross Dedication for Richard Price

The Appomattox United Daughters of the Confederacy presented the Iron Cross of Honor to Corporal Richard C. Price, on Saturday November 11, 2006 at the Madisonville Presbyterian Church, Madisonville, Virginia. Corporal Price was in the 1st Virginia Infantry, Co. C. Corporal Price served the Confederacy from January 1863 until July 1865.

He was born in rural Charlotte County, Virginia on September 7, 1837 to Nathaniel Daniel Price and Mecca Harvey Price. After the war Richard returned to the Charlotte County and married Euthretia Early of Bedford, Virginia. Richard and Euthretia had four children - William H. Price, Charles Early Price, and twin girls, Estelle Price and Susie Price. Richard Price attended the 50th Reunion at Gettysburg. Mr. Price died in March 1925. Mr. Price is the Great Grandfather of Appomattox Chapter President, Carol Adams Williams.

The Iron Cross of Honor is a Confederate grave marker patterned after the Southern Cross of Honor Medal. The marker is in the shape of a cross and is black in color. On the front of the marker are the dates 1861-1865, which represents the beginning and the end of the war. Also on the front are the words "DEO VINDICI" which is Latin for "Vindicated by God". On the back are the letters CSA, meaning Confederate States of America, along with the battle flag. This marker is a way to give the families of the deceased soldiers of the Confederacy in the War Between the States, a medal to honor their service in the war. Every visitor to the grave will remember this Confederate hero was honored by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Members of the Appomattox Courthouse Rangers and Appomattox Children of the Confederacy also participated in the program.
