Re. John Leworthy, I believe he could be my Great-Grandfather. John Leworthy was married to Annie Leworthy. They had nine children: Laura Hop, July 1, 1878; Edith Mabel March 21, 1879; Tracy Frederick March 25, 1881, Reginald Thomas August 27, 1882; Frances Augustine July 19, 1885; Florence Monica (my Grandmother), August 9, 1886; Evangeline Mary May 5, 1889; Dorothy Frances November 8, 1891; Ethel Agatha April 28, 1894. I have not been successful in any attempts to search out where John Leworthy came from, or where he married Annie _____?

Hello Joan

Thank you for your message - my research has led me to the Barnstable Leworthy's - it would appear that my John Leworthy (born in Bedminster) was married to Harriet (born in Glastonbury in 1821. Stephen is checking out the Welsh John Leworthy - it would look as though we are all connected in some way as the Barnstable Leworthy's were mariners on ships from Barnstable to Bristol and moving then into the Welsh Valleys. There were several Johns - John married to Margaret - John married to Sarah - John married to Elizabeth. I'm looking forward to seeing how we all fit together.

Regards
Di

"My" John Leworthy living in Swansea in 1851, was born in Castle Hill, Devon around 1829. I assume that is the Castle Hill by the side of the A361 near the village of Filleigh - about seven miles from Barnstable. He was still unmarried in 1851 aged 22 years and was listed as a shoe maker.

Dear DI

All the information I got was in the note I posted on the 14th of December. My aunt was interested back in the 30's and 40's but shedidn't dare ask her mother-in-law who played the matriachal - almost Victorian - role towards her young daughter in law.

I know that Hilda Leworthy had a son called Cyril by a first marriage (hastily arranged) with a gent called Cowden. I know that Cyril grew up with his Grandparents but is now dead. This "brought up by Grandparents" was pretty common with early and unexpected births. He must have some family information which he may have passed on to his own family. I don't know yet whether this "Cyril" had the surname of Cowden or Leworthy. I know that the rediscovered Swansea family of mine had contact with him through the years. But further information will have to wait until I have met and spoken to my long lost cousins and aunt.

The parents of my Hilda Leworthy were Sarah Anne Leworthy ( née Hennessy - a seamstress from County Cork) and ... Leworthy. There were five other children. Sarah Anne's husband (Leworthy) died young so she remarried and had another child, Ellen Jane. I don't know Sara Anne's last surname.

There is much more scandal - but this is not relevant to the Leworthy connection!

Steven

Dear Di and Joan

In a few days the census for 1901 becomes available on-line. This will solve a few of my own questions and perhaps the Leworthy families around the west of england and wales as well. I will check for Leworthy families based in Swansea and will post a list of results. The people we are interested in would still be minors at home in 1901 and fathers and wives names will be available. Lets hope the new system works!

Hi Joan,
There are 3 James Scandrett in my family tree, but can't see any connection to Leworthy. However, if they were from County Moira in Ireland there may be a connection.
I am in New Zealand and my G.grandmother was Anne Scandrett b 1866, married Herbert Ralls in 1892.

Hi, just noted that you are looking for Sarah Scandrett. My grandparents were scandretts and from the area you are looking in. There is a chance that my grandparents Great Uncle was married to Mary scandrett from Dilwyn, this could be Sarah's sister. If you know please mail me
