Amanda,
What, exactly happens at the 50% point? Have you let it sit in the Not Responding condition for a while? Perhaps it is working but you are seeing the "not responding" on the top line of
Family Tree Maker
?

I'm not sure what you mean by "the 50% point", but I've let the program sit as long as 10 minutes with no response from the entire application. When I click anywhere on the form when it's in this condition, the screen greys out and the title bar changes to Not Responding. Once it gets to that point it never comes back (well, by "never" I mean at most 10 minutes).

Default browser: Firefox 3.0.10, but also happens when IE 8 is the default browser.
I had been compacting the file after each hang, but stopped when it became apparent that it wasn't helping. The last time I compacted the file was yesterday afternoon (I've only worked in it today for about 20 minutes).

Amanda,
Did your problem start with MSIE Version 8?
Does MSIE and Firefox work about the same?
I have found MSIE 8 to be very slow. But I keep it set as Default for
Family Tree Maker
, but use Firefox. But, I am on Firefox 3.5, Beta 4.

It may have started with IE8 - the problem started within the last week, and I updated to IE8 around that time. How do I set my FTM browser to FireFox? I don't think I've changed that, so it may be using IE as the default (even though FireFox is my default for everything else).♠

Amanda,
To set Firefox as your Default Browser:
1 - Open Firefox.
2 - At the top of the Firefox Window, click on the Tools Menu and select Options
3 - Select the Advanced panel, then click the General tab, and then click Check Now.
4 - Select Yes to set Firefox as your default browser.

Ah. I've already done that and it doesn't fix the problem. Firefox has been my default browser for the last couple of years.

Amanda,
As I understand it,
Family Tree Maker
uses some of the MSIE application features for it's online features. That is why I keep MSIE as my Default
Browser
. I am using MSIE 8 but haven't had a Not Responding issue with 18.0.0.307.

Could the .NET 3.5 SP1 update be affecting this? I believe there were a lot of changes made to that service pack.
