Hello again,

I have continued to try to untangle the Rogers of Farmborough/Clutton. My g.grandfather was George Rogers born about 1848 and he married Martha Gage, Farmborough 1878. Bath bmd shows George Rogers born Clutton 1848 and mother`s maiden name Chalenger. In the 1851 census the family are living in Clutton - George Rogers 33, spouse Frances 34, daughter Emma 10, son William 8, daughter Mary 5, son George 2. But where was George Rogers junior between 1851 and 1878? The 1881 census shows George junior working as a labourer. Others in his household are spouse Martha, daughter Ann age 2 and lodger Sarah Rogers 64. Ten years earlier we find Sarah, widow, as head of household with sons James 32 and George 23. Sarah`s maiden name was Lakey but cannot find birth registration of son George.

In the meantime the 1871 census shows George senior living in Monmouthshire Wales, working as a coal miner, members of his household being spouse Frances 53, daughter Emma 30 and son Henry 13. Ten years later daughter Emma is still living with George and Frances, and the record also shows a daughter Jane Williams 29 - husband in America. Next door Henry is now married and living with wife and son. In 1891 the household is now just George senior and spouse Frances. He is now 73 working as a coal miner and only has one arm. This sounds an interesting family but is George senior my g.g.grandfather or are George junior`s origins with another family.

James Rogers married Sarah Lakey 1835. There is no record of the birth of a son called George to them but apparently he lived with them as a son. Were they relatives he went to live with when his father went to Wales to live?

I am still puzzling over this.

Surnames: Purnell
Hello

I was wondering if anyone has come across a Martha Purnell.
She was born 1796 in Farmborough. Married James Pickford.
I am trying to locate parents for her.

Thanks for your time.
Michelle

Have you tried any of the following sites?

http://www.highlittletonhistory.org.uk/church.html
http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?o...
http://www.geocities.com/heartland/lane/8397/Clutton.htm

There's also Ian Sage's site which gives all known sites with transcriptions online: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ian.sage/pr_index.htm

For Timsbury, contact the Online Parish Clerk (OPC) for Timsbury, Godfrey Ellis whose address you'll find on the Somerset OPC site: http://wsom-opc.org.uk

Hope that helps

I don't have a Martha PURNELL amongst my PURNELLs

I have checked baptisms and a Martha Purnell was baptised at Farmborough All Saints 31st January 1802. Parents are James and Mary. However there is a 5 to 6 year difference with the birth date quoted by mljackson66,

Sorry about the broken links.

I see you've been given the correct one for Ian's site and I've updated it in my bookmarks.

Yahoo pulled the plug on all Geocities pages which I'd forgotten about. There is a version of the heartland site on the Wayback Machine, but it doesn't appear to be complete. I've mailed the lady whose site it is to find out the new address for it.

I didn't do the transcripts. I only gave the links to them.

Baptisms didn't always take place when a child was a baby. It should also be remembered that birth dates weren't routinely given at that time, only the baptismal date. The actual date (or an age) might be given if there were several children from the same family baptised at the same time or if the child was older than the norm. However, the incumbent wasn't obliged to include that information. This means there can be apparent anomalies.

The advice when dealing with transcripts is that, as errors can creep in, it's always best to check the original source. This can be done by hiring the relevant film for a nominal fee from the nearest LDS FHC which can be found on the familysearch site together with the relevant film number.
