Go to the Legion's web site and check with them. It is your best bet.
"Reserve" in France do not have the same connotation than in the US… Everyone was in "reserve" after conscription as long as one was “serviceable” according to age and assignment or Service etc.. Some wanting to climb up the ladder could volunteer for “active periods” of 20-30 days per year!
As an “Adjudant” (master sergeant or W/O ) he could not command a battalion!
Ajudant were (still are) some kind of administrative NCO sitting next to a Captain commanding a battalion/battery/company.
In the battle field an “adjudant” could also be in charge of one or two "sections" them self made up of a number of infantry squads. etc
