Napoleon's General Augustin de L'espinasse

I'm wondering if anyone knows any personal/family details of Napoleon's General, Augustin de Lespinasse, or can tell me where I might be able to find this information? My GGGG grandfather Francois Espinasse was the son of an Augustin de L'espinasse and I'm trying to find out if it is Augustin, Napoleon's General, or someone else of the same name. Francois' mother was Marie de la Grange and we think he was born around 1788-89.

I'm also interested to know if there's anywhere I can find records of French POWs in Scotland during the Napoleonic Wars as we believe that Francois Espinasse was imprisoned in Scotland during this time.

Any information or assistance would be appreciated.

Joseph LeFevre - bodyguard (or Guardsman) for Napoleon

My LeFevre family is:

Mr. Joseph LeFevre (Fabre, Lafavre, LeFebvre) and Mrs. Mary Ann.
Children:
Margaretta (Barbara?) born 1802 or 1809 near Strasbourg. According to our family bible is says born ‘Salby’ Strasbourg.
Charles Napoleon born about 1801 or 1806.
Caroline born 15 Dec 1817.

The family was Roman Catholic.

From written family stories we are told that:

1) Margaretta was a lady in waiting in the Queen of Frances’ court. We have ear rings that she supposedly wore at court.
2) That she is the niece of Marshal LeFevre of Napoleon time - although I do not believe this story as I can find no proof.
3) Caroline could see the clock on the Cathedral in Strasbourg from her bedroom window.
4) That their mother mainly spoke German having learned only a little French.
5) That their father, Joseph, has been described as a bodyguard of Napoleon’s or was a Guardsman in Napoleon’s army and was wounded in the Battle of Waterloo. He died sometime after Caroline was born.
6) They immigrated about 1827 but we have not found them on any ship. They settled in Pennsylvania near a defunct French community called Azylum.
7) Joseph was French and their mother Mary Ann was Germanic.
8) I have checked the birth records in Strasbourg and can not find any births for the 3 children.
9) There might have been a 4th sibling but we have no proof.
10) Mrs Mary Ann LeFevre remarried to a Mr. Cross before immigrating to the USA.

Some other families settled in this area of Pennsylvania who are also described as Napoleon’s bodyguards and some notes say they were present when Napoleon surrendered. These names include: John C. Bahl (married Helen Feuschwanger in 1815), Leiphan Peter, John Messersmith. Not sure if they served together or not.

We have not been able to find any further information.

I would appreciate any information anyone can find on Joseph LeFevre and his family.
van Emden, Napoleon's Army

I have an ancestor who was a dental surgeon in Napoleon's Army and I am trying to find some record of where he may have served. His name was Hartog van Emden which he changed to Hendryk van Emden, subsequently changing it again to Henri d'Emden. As he was born in 1793 he would have served in one or more of the later campaigns. He eventually moved to England where he was married.
Does anyone know where to find a list of those who served with Napoleon's Army?

Am searching for information on the French naval vessels Victoire and Dromadaire. These ships are known to have transported soldiers and colonists to Louisiana in 1718 and 1720. Would like to find information on the size of the ships, where built, armament, where else they served, etc. I've come up with nothing on the internet, but I know this info is out there at least on some old ships. Any ideas on where to look would be much appreciated.

My Grandfather was in the French Army Reserves and was also a legionnaire during the Indochina period. His rank and name was Adjudant Va Sang Lo. My dad tells me he was in charge of a battalion in Laos. My grandfather was later assassinated during his tours to gain French support in Laos. I was just hoping if anyone had any information on where I could get more info or if it is even possible to get any about my grandfather. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am searching for information on Jean Boutte' who came to the fort at MObile, Ala as a member of the French ARmy, but he was deported from the port of MObile to France to retreive his discharge papers which Jean Boutte had lost on Madeline Street in Paris, France and this happened in the 1750's - 1760's circa. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much
Also, Andre Claude Boutte, of Bourseville, France came to the fort at MObile, Ala, 1730's 1740's circa with the French Army and he served as the blacksmith, because he was called Andre Claude Boutte dit La Lime, which means file. Andre Claude Boutte was discharged from the French Army at Mobile, Ala. during the years of the late 1750's and he was married to Marie Josephe Bodin dit Miragouin, who was the daughter of Nicholas Bodin dit Miragoiun and his wife, Francoie Paille, and he was the father of Francois Cezar, Phillipe, Joseph Antoine, Loius Hilaire, and Jean Baptiste Boutte's. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much,
kitty

Finding Napoleonic Army records

How can I find out if someone served in Napoleon's Army? His name was Marten Geret Smit born in Ditzum, which was in East Friesland, Netherlands, then. It is now in Germany, about 10 miles from the border. Anyway, Marten was born Aug. 28, 1770 and was married to Jeanne(tte) Moreau, who was born and lived her life also in Holland. Marten supposedly was a captain in Napoleon's Army. Any suggestions would be welcome.

By a twist of fate, I came across our family name as part of Napolean's Imperial Consular in 1796 - 1801. He was a Senior Adjutant (brigade head), but I cannot find his first name in order to connect him to our family. Could someone point me in the right direction? We were nobles in Abauj, Hungary & Udvarhely, Transylvania.

He was in Vietnam during the French occupation and did a lot to help out the vietnamese colonists before pulling out. I am not sure if this is his name or not, so if anyone knows about any French soldier or Captain in vietnam during that time frame please contact me.
French Army in Spain in 1820-1824

I have an ancestor Joseph Louis Traizet, who was a Sergeant in the French Army, listed as 1st Company of the 1st Battalion of the Infantry Regiment of the army of France in 1824. He was born in Marseilles, France, but married and raised his family in Pasaia which is a village in the Basque territory of Spain. The only military-based record I have of him is the description I listed above which shows up in his marriage certificate in September of 1824 in Spain.

I was wondering if there were records somewhere to track his military career in France and what he was doing in Spain in 1824.

Thanks in advance!
Fred

Hi everyone. I have now updated my Father's web site dedicated to a great soldier and his friends the French Legionnaires.

I am still searching for my Grandfather. He was with St. Cyr Academy as Captain...and a photo of his is suppose to appear in Menton, France year 1912. Any suggestions?

My Father, he served in the Sahara Regions in 1907-1912, as an Spahis (Knights of the Dessert in English), Chasseur d'Afrique and Hussar in the First World War. I cant still get any information from France's Government either a photo of his unit in the Sahara or in the First World War.

Yes, I have written to St. Cyr for Grandfather (no answer).
Yes, I have tried Menton, Geneology Dept.
Yes, I have tried First World War sites....
Any other ideas?
If you care to look in the web site dedicated to Father, you can read his military "livret". I would be very grateful to you if any other ideas.

www.ruffieu.com (has been updated).

Celine
Dear Teresa,

Sorry I didn't answer earlier but I've been busy.

You mention a Louis in some of your e-mail. I have to look in the book I have -NAPOLEON AT ST.HELENA- The Journals of General Bertrand January -May 1821.

It contains information on the Bertrand family. It's an out of print book I located and purchased. I don;t know if your near a library. If so, possibly you could check to see if they have inter library connections. Possibly the National Library in Washington, D.C. has a copy of this book deciphered and annotated by PAUL FLEURIOT dd LANGLE. If not I'll type out information you would like to have and send it to you.

You have certainly travelled. So have we and learned a lot. I wish I had started genealogy before I started my trips.

My husband was thankful I didn't have the interest when he was serving in the army durning World War II. He was stationed in Leige, Belgium where my relatives we located for a while. He said I would have had made him crazy searching for relatives. My great-grandmother was born in that country.
It was her sister that married a Bertrand. They lived in Belgium.

Enough for now. Let me hear from you again and we'll see what I can do for your.

Bert

Thomas Lasley (spelling?) in French Army at Brest

Hello,
I am hoping someone may be able to help. I have worked on my family's genealogy quite hard the past 3 years. My GG grandfather was supposedly Thomas Lasley (Laslie, Lastley, many similar spellings possible). His son, James Preston Lasley, was married in Posey Co., IN in 1855. Family oral history says that Thomas was from France and that he served in the French Army at Brest. Thomas supposedly born ca 1801 so I guess this service would have been in 1820s? He came to America in 1830s or 1840s possibly. A web page at:
http://www.greglasley.net/lasley.html
has pretty much all I know under the Lasley name. Lasley by any spelling does not seem to be a French name that I can find. I have been upagainst a brick wall trying to find Thomas Lasley anywhere...he does not seem to exist. Any help would be appreciated. Is there any way to search names in teh French Army in the early 1800s?

Thank you
Greg Lasley

Apparently, after the siege of Astorga in 1810 a letter was sent by a Colonel of Napoleons Irish Legion to the French Minister of War. This letter amoungst other things praises Lt J Perry of the Legion for his actions at Astorga. As a direct result Perry won the Legion of Honour. I heard this document is archived at the Chateau D Vinc. but they will not send it to me via post. Does anyone have a copy of the letter and would they please send me a copy of it?

His wife’s name was Magdalena (FRIDLIN) BRUNNER.
French military deserters

My great great grandfather Joseph Suladie (possibly Souladie) born August 30, 1827 in France deserted the French military around 1850 or before and came to the U.S., possibly with a brother. The family story is that he served a 7 year period and then had to serve another 7 years. Conditions were difficult and he deserted the military and came to Kentucky. During WWII, a great uncle serving in France saw a near-100 yr. old warrant for Joseph's arrest for desertion still in effect but information about where he saw it has been lost. I have not been able to find the department in which he was born or any other information about this family. Where would I look to find records on those who deserted? Any help would be appreciated.

My American cousin will be going to France in May, hoping to retrace some of the steps of his service in WWII.

He remembers spending a night, in 1944, in Paris, in a prison that was being run by U.S. military personnel. He had entered seeking medical attention, and wound up spending time among German prisoners. He believes the prison was known as "Bastille Nord" or "Bastille du Nord."

Does anyone have information on where this prison actually stood in Paris? Thank you.

Samuel was one of my ancestors who was taken prisoner by the LIVENTURE, a privateer of 12 guns Nov 20 1797. They were landed at L'Orient and marched across France to Charlville-Mezieres, near Reims. He wrote a diary, which we have, of his experiences but omitted to mention which ship he was on. Nor did he say when they were returned to England.
I have looked at naval records, both English and French and cannot find any mention of an engagement. In the body of the diary he mentions being in a prison with men of the AMAZON, NYMPH and HUZZAR. The spelling of the last two may be incorrect as I can find no record other than NYMPHE and HUSSAR.
I would be interested in any suggestions to track this down.

I have, after knowing this story for sometime, decided to try to find out how our family could possibly be connected to the General Bertrand so often mentioned on this list. The story is the same - an ancestor was a genearal in Bonaparte's Army with the name Bertrand. My grandfather was named Noel Bertrand DAVIS and his father's home where he was raised was called, "The Bertrand's". My grandfather's paternal family came to Tasmania, Australia in 1842 from Middlesex, England and his mother was an Alice Edith POPE. Any information regarding how to best approach this would be greatly appreciated.

French Navy Treasurer

My patriarch, Joseph Martin Anne ROUBAUD, was born in Marseille, FR in 1793. He immigrated to the US in 1813. He said his father, Joseph ROUBAUD, was once Treasurer of the Navy. Does anyone know of a way to find out if any person with the name of ROUBAUD held such a post in the late 1700's in France?
