Rich, I tried sending 3 photos and it didn't go through. Could you send me an email address to send them to?

I have 4 photos of the monument - not the battlefield because I was interested in the names. Also, I googled the battlefield before I wrote to you and found a wealth of photos available that might be more of what you want. I'm happy to share my pictures if you want them, however.
Pat

Rich, This totally took me by surprise since it's been so long ago that I posted the note. I'll have to go back into my photo files and find it.

Is there someone there you are researching or is it just the old fort? It was a very interesting place. Not easy to get to in winter but quite fascinating when you can go.

I'll see what I can find in my photo files.

Pat

In 1870 the companies posted at Ft Bridger were: 'D' 2nd Cavalry and E, H, & K 7th Infantry. At mid year they were replaced by F & G 13th Infantry. Look at U.S. Returns from Regular Army Infantry Regiments for the 13th Infantry. The 7th Infantry for that period are not on-line yet (roll 82 of the microfilm series). I don't know the status of the 2nd Cavalry returns.

Andrew Anderson WA Pioneer, Indian and Civil War veteran

Hi,
I am looking details for Andrew Anderson, born about 1828 in Norway and lived in Walla Walla Washington from mid 1850s. Actually I first found Andrew from 1860 census for Fort Walla Walla (the 9th Infantry Regiment Company B), where he most probably served during Indian Wars. According to Andrew's obit Andrew went to east (1861?) for the northern cause when the Civil War had started and returned to Walla Walla after the war and remained there since as a blacksmith.

I would appreciate any additional information of Andrew and especially if someone can do a lookup for Andrew's possible entry in U.S. Army Register of Enlistments 1798-1914, which to my knowledge should include information of both Indian War and Civil War soldiers. Thank you!

Best regards,
Juha

Hi, This letter was provided by me some time ago to multiple cousins. It was saved through the years by Margaret Sager Faris. It was a clipping from one of the Corydon, Iowa newspapers -- Promise City never had a newspaper. The original source was a letter from Elizabeth Sager that was sent to Ohio after which it was sent throughout the family. C. A. Sager had it later placed in the Corydon newspaper as he liked to get his name in print. When the clipping got so it was almost unreadable, the only way Margaret could preserve the words was to have her neighbor type it out (this was before photocopies). However, the neighbor was not a very good typist. That is where the misspellings come from -- not Elizabeth.

Re: 2nd Seminole War - Friendly Indian Troops

Some of my ancestors were named Ayres, and moved from South Carolina to Georgia and then into Florida as their reservation was overtaken by settlers. They were members of the Catawba Indian tribe, which your relative may have been also. They, too, were considered "friendly Indians", and fought bravely in support of the American cause both before, during and after the American Revolution. An excellent book concerning this tribe is "The Indians's New World" by James H. Merrell: http://www.amazon.com/Indians-New-World-Catawbas-Neighbors/d... . There are also a lot of older books, which are no longer under copyright, and which may be downloaded for free, at www.archive.org . Here is the link to books on the Catawba Tribe, which I suspect your ancestor was a member of, since the Catawbas were present in Florida during that period, along with the Cherokees: http://archive.org/search.php?query=Catawba%20Indians%20AND%...

Here is a link to a webpage which gives information about the unit your ancestor was a part of: http://www.southernhistory.us/flamilind.htm . It is hard to say if they were all Indians, since many, and especially the Catawbas, used English names for many years. He isn't shown on the roster, but could be listed under his Indian name instead.

Kentucky mounted volunteers in 1794 lists Abraham Long fighting in Wayne's Campaign. I am looking for any information about this man. Any insight on how to search or where to search would be great. I have three records for Abraham Long serving in the Kentucky Mounted Volunteers, in Whitaker's Battalion Mounted Volunteers, as well as listing Wayne's campaign.

How can I find the total military records for Abraham Long? The main goal is to find a document that names his parents. I have family letters stating that Abraham's father fought in the American Revolution in Virginia. I'm so close to solving this mystery is killing me! Anyway I'd love to prove the family letters true and any help will be greatly appreciated.

My g-uncle re-enlisted in the army after the civil war. He recieved a civil war penison. There was no mention of his later service in his penison records. I know that he was at
Fort Bridger in 1870, but have no idea of regiment he served with. I cannot find him in the 1880 census, but I know he was discharged arount 1888. Unfortunatley, his name
was John A Smith.

This is so long after your original query that you may well have already solved this matter for yourself. However, it sounds to me as if your ancestor was serving in the 1st or 2nd Oregon Mounted Volunteers. The 1st was raised to fight in the Yakima War in Washington Territory. When hostilities also broke out with several tribes in the Rogue River Valley in southern Oregon, the 2nd Regiment was raised. There is an old book called "Early Indian Wars of Oregon," by Frances Victor Fuller, which was based on extensive research in the records of the Adjutant General in the Oregon State Archives. The book includes as appendices all the original muster rolls of companies that the author could find (a few were missed or no longer extant). It has been years since I looked at this source, but I do not recall that these muster rolls are indexed, so it is probably a matter of plowing through them page by page to find the right company and individual. The book has been reprinted, but since the original copyright expired, it is also freely available online from Google Books.

Hi, unfortunately I don't have photos of him or any of my family - except for my parents. There are probably family members of Francis M. Durvin still living in the Richmond, VA area - I will try to contact them - but I live in CA and have not had any communication with them. I was able to get his 'Final Statement' from the National Archives - this contains about 8 pages of information on his personal affects and belongings - and a statement that his body was turned over to his brother for burial in Virgina. There was also a notation that his peritonitis had been contracted in the line of duty. I would like to find out more - there are medical records of the period for Ft. Sidney also in the Archives and perhaps in Nebraska - I just haven't been able to get copies as yet. I do have a photo of his headstone (from find-a-grave). If I get any other information (including a photo) I would be happy to provide it to you.

His Company was stationed Fort Apache; AT during his enlistment. The 10th didn't move Montana until April 1892. When your gfather traveled to fort is was probably by train. As for further research, I would request his service record from the National Archives.

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pr...

As a Keyer for the Buffalo Soldier, I have learned so about these brave men and that that are the truly America unsung heroes.

Let me know if I can help you further, Don

I just discovered that a relative of mine Francis M. Durvin(he was the son of my great, great granduncle), enlisted in the 21st Infantry, Company C on 12/31/1884 and died of peritonitis on 12/11/1889 at Fort Sidney in Nebraska. His body was returned to Richmond, VA for burial at Oakwood Cemetery. I would like to know more about my ancestor and how he came to die of peritonitis? Does anyone have any information on the 21st Infantry during this period (1884-1889)? Any way to get more information on his death? I would appreciate any information.

i need pictures of a mural on the wall of the museum at Ft Robinson in NW Nebraska. I am told it shows cavalry troops and scouts during the 1870s Indian wars. My grand uncle Fred M. "Lone Star" HANS was a scout at age 15 and also participated at Wounded Knee. I have his diary. Supposedly the mural shows a young scout so i would sincerely appreciate one or more wide angles as well as a closeup and full length of the young scout. Maybe the museum curator would have a copy or knowledge of the original photo.

Sincerely grateful for your assistance

please reply to

dadbrown(underscore)99(at)yahoo.com

Dan Brown

Does anyone know if it is worthwhile to order service record for an ancestor who served in Indian Wars?

I find my Eldridge MORGAN on index.....he served in 1817-8 Seminole War and later in Cherokee War. All I have is info on his company or regiment. I am courious if he may have rec'd any land due to this service or if there is more info that could be gleaned from service record(s)??? If he rec'd land, where would I begin to look for this info?

Eldridge was in Henry Co. GA at the time he was listed for both terms of service.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Last word is difficult but could be "a post" ??? The other definitely reads "service(s) at Fort Dodge, Kansas." Below is info concerning Ft. Dodge found on the net.........hope you have your answers by now.

Fort Dodge, Kansas is located approximately 5 miles East of Dodge City, Kansas, on Highway 400. Fort Dodge was built in 1865. The first buildings were sod and adobe, and lumber arrived and the first wooden buildings were errected in. in 1866. Fort Dodge was only used as a fort for 17 years. In January 1890, Fort Dodge was deeded to the State of Kansas for use as the Kansas State Soldiers Home. The Kansas Veterans' Cemetery was opened in 2002.

I'm trying to track down info on my gggrandfather. He fought in the Black Hawk War, volunteering from White County, Ill.
I have located 2 land warrants he was given for his service and his name on the Illinois database. He was in the 3rd Regiment, 2nd Brigade, Captain William Thomas' company.

The family moved to Missouri in the 1850's and he died between 1870-1880. His widow's obit says she was drawing his pension but after a long wait National Archives has been unable to find any records for it.

I am stumped as to where to look next. Missouri doesnt have either of them on their pensioners list. I was hoping the widow's app file might give me his date of death, where he is buried, etc. Of course the greatest hope was perhaps some info on his parents names, etc.

Any suggestions where I might check next? I'm a bit lost.

Charles R Warner( wife Pauline Ellerman) from London Ohio was according to my father's stories, a soldier in the Indian Wars. Hair raising stories were told about battles and attacks on the fort.

I found a Census record of 1880 in South Carolina that lists a son Charles born in Wyoming, 1872, which leads me to a Wyoming connection.

Any way to verify service in the Indian Wars? Height --5'9'', dark eyes, black hair, dark complexion, occupation --farmer, resided in Polk Co.. Married Clarenda H. Kibbey on 6 Sep 1854.

I have just confirmed family tradition that my GGGF Dr Frederick W C Beavan was in the US Army at the time of the Black Hawk War of 1832. I found his enlistment 29 June 1832 in New York 2nd Inf.F. (what does the F stand for? - Foot?) Using Google I have learnt that apparently 2nd Inf. didn't actually fight in the War but was there. According to the record I found, he deserted in December 1832 and I know he ended up in Canada.

What I would like to find out is what they were doing for those 6 months. Our tradition is that he was living on a reservation - would they have been guards of the tribe?

Any suggestions of where to contact next would be appreciated. I live in Australia.

Lyn

Hello, I am researching a family in Greene County Georgia where a couple of the brothers have seems to disappear and there are no records for them. Recently I found online a muster roll of a Militia Regiment in Greene County Georgia that was sent to Columbus Georgia about 1836 I believe which would have been the start of the Second Creek War. In this muster rolls two of these brothers names are mentioned. One of these brothers survived as I have found in in the 1840 through 1860 Censuses. The Other brother mentioned, I have found no record at all which leads me to believe that he died between 1836 and 1840 and could have quit possibly been killed during stationing in Columbus Georgia. What records would be available for me to research this brother and find out what happened to him if any. He would have been young, I estimate he was born about 1810 ss he would have only been around 26 at the time and I have found no marriage record for him in Greene or surrounding counties. The other brother that did survived married in Greene County in 1838. Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, I was referring to Utah's Black Hawk War (1865–72) which is the name of the estimated 150 battles, skirmishes, raids, and killings between Mormon settlers and members of the Ute, Paiute and Navajo tribes, led by a local Ute chief, Antonga Black Hawk.

At the time of my posting I didn't know the difference or even when the first Black hawk war was.

Interesting. Your ancestor enlisted in the militia in 1855 and served in a war which took place in 1832.

Your dates and geography are not right for the Black Hawk War. The BHW was in 1832, primarily in Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. Maybe he was in the BHW, then moved to Utah?

African Americans in the Indian Wars

I'm having a difficult time identifying a tintype photographic image of a man known as "Uncle George" by family members. He is said to be "Indian Scout" or "Indian Fighter". We know not where the photo was taken, when, nor by whom. No identifying marks or information appear on the photo. He could be a relative of the RANDOLPH family (Millwood, Clarke County VA) or of the HEBRON family (Laurel, Howard County, MD.) He is seated on a horse-drawn wagon, dressed in baggy trousers, and a dark long sleeve coat. He is complete with top hat (Abe Lincoln style) that has a large feather protruding from the outside hatband. Would anyone have possible leads on how/where information might be obtained on AA in the Indian Wars. So far my research efforts have borne no fruit.

Atlas of the Sioux Wars - second edition - available online

Atlas of the Sioux Wars, second edition.

Part 1:
http://cgsc.leavenworth.army.mil/carl/download/csipubs/sioux...

Part 2:
http://cgsc.leavenworth.army.mil/carl/download/csipubs/sioux...

Abstract: This atlas represents a modest effort to examine the Army's campaigns against the Sioux, one of the great Indian tribes of the American West. The three Sioux wars covered in this atlas offer a variety of historical case studies for the student of low-intensity conflict. The difficulties of using volunteer forces to quell a rebellion of suppressed peoples are investigated in the 1862 campaign in Minnesota. The 1866-68 Sioux War in Wyoming and Montana is the story of securing a fixed route of travel through hostile territory with limited resources. The final conflict, that of 1876, encompasses one of the largest and most ambitious search-and-destroy missions in the history of Indian warfare. This atlas will be especially useful to those soldiers who wish to study the Sioux campaigns on the actual sites by using the Staff Ride methodology. For them, this work may serve as an educational reference as they begin their study, provide a handy companion on the battlefield, and serve as a helpful reminder as they integrate their insights from the classroom with those of the battlefield.

Author: Collins, Charles D.
