Bennett- Thanks for the reply, and I think I see what you mean. I may owe you a bit of an apology, I think.

Looking back at my info in TMG, it shows family units connected in the tree view as well as family view. It just doesn't (quite properly I think) show a spouse in the person view and it's child and sibling windows. This goes to my recent posts about a marriage not being recorded when you simply add a spouse, and in retrospect I think this is the right way to record the "union".

Children DO NOT seem to be a problem in either TMG or Legacy, either. In Legacy, the views all appear normal.

I do however, have problems importing the Gedcom into php-gedview and TNG web programs. I'm not totally sure that it's anyone's program problem, but possibly not everyone in sync as to the Gedcom format fine points... but it's still currently a problem.

Ok-final comment (I promise). I now know more than I want about Gedcom files, and I take back the apology. Just because 3 out of 5 of my software prgs. (and FTM) seem to accept the gedcom, it's not in the correct format.

The LDS gedchk report I ran on my tree's gedcom shows 8 syntax errors and 219 cross-reference errors (missing FAMC and FAMS for individuals).

If you want the text file report, email me and I'll send it to you. I gave you the benefit of the doubt, but now I'm just annoyed that you suggested a workaround and implied that everything except the gedcom, PAF, and FTM were defective.

There is now a patch available for phpgedview which will fix Ancestry's bad gedcom coding by reprocessing your ancestry file and correcting the lack of FAMC and FAMS tags. See this link for more details.

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid...

Also, I've been in touch with admin at Ancestry about this, see their email response here:

"The developer here at Ancestry.com that created the GEDCOM download feature had tested its functionality with most of the popular software packages, but not with the ones that you use. He is now aware that improvements need to be made and he has assured me that they will be made. Unfortunately, it may be several months before a window with enough time for him to fix the problem will occur in his schedule. Thanks for mentioning the problem on the message board and thus bringing it to our attention."

Months??? The php script developed by the phpgedview developers is all of 25 lines long and took an afternoon to write?

Who are you, Bennett?

one of 305 users from Provo, Utah, USA

but internal company policy forbids them to use these boards for other than for their own research

too bad

that also killed off the useful feedback dialogue about errors on ancestry.co.uk

their ineffective public relations department claims a monopoly on external communication which is normal for any employer of more than one thousand people

suggets a certain confusion about the rebranding

Just to add to this thread ... Family Historian also has problems with the missing FAMC/FAMS tags. It loads the individuals and the families but can't quite make the full connection between them.

Looking forward to Ancestry following the GEDCOM spec properly ...

That link sorted my file out fine :-) Thanks!

The PHP needed just a bit of hacking to work on my local server, but now I have a workable GED file for Family Historian.
