HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE??

This inscription appears around a knight riding a horse on my GG grandfathers headstone, Isaiah Lord, b 1822, and emigrated to the US from Lancashire. There are other surnames in the family plot also, so could be for another person, but he was the owner of the plot.

From what I have read on-line, there are only a handful of persons granted this title. Does anyone know where I could look to see if their is any validity to this emblem on the headstone?

My father had asked if I noticed the emblem of hammer and nails on the tombstone, inscribed for his occupation as a carpenter.

So I don't know if this would have any real significance for being inscribed.

Any thoughts or meaning of the phrase would be appreciated.

Elizabeth

Missing Markers: Who's Responsible?

Folks,

Hope someone can educate me on this issue!

I have a dozen or so family members in one of the older Catholic cemeteries in DC. All have markers, save one couple... one d 1907, the other 1926.

The location of the site was verified twice with the cemetery office, but the only thing found there is a flat monument for another family (with last name only). This monument is partially buried. The area around it is empty, though the cemetery map shows several names for that immediate area. I have poked around with a metal probe to see if I strike anything a few inches into the soil, but nothing has stopped the probe leading me to believe there are no sunken stones.

I have every reason to believe that a stone would have been purchased. The family was not destitute, owned property in the District, and the couple had sons and daughters who they still spent time with (in fact, one daughter and son in law with kids lived in the house with them at the time of both deaths). Also, the husband was a wounded Civil War vet (Union, regular Army, and was a career soldier, though wounded to the point that he could only be a guard at the AGO's office), and had an invalid pension, and wife had widows pension. (I have seen the windows pension file... no mention of a grave marker is made)

Asking the cemetery about the missing stone, I am told there are no records as to whether a stone originally sat there or not, and if I want to put one there, it's my dime.

Another cemetery in Baltimore also has no stone for a couple I feel fairly sure would have had a stone. I have asked them to investigate if a stone once sat there or not, but keep getting put off for an answer (though they keep telling me they can find out for me).

So, to make a long story short (to late now!), is the cemetery responsible for the markers? Or the family? Is it up to me to replace them? Or should the cemetery be replacing them?

Thanks!
Denny
Looking for gravesite of a G-G Grandmother and her daughter

I am looking for the gravesite of Amelia Catherine Anna (Ruder) Dechant and her daughter Elizabeth Dechant. Both died on July 18, 1878 in or around the small unincorporated community of Munjor, KS. Amelia died in Child birth and Elizabeth died later the same day. Amelia's husband was Johann Dechant. Johann owned a farm near the NW part of the town at that time. Johann later died on a farm South of Bazine, KS and is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, South of Bazine. However, Amelia is not buried there and there isn't any record of Amelia and Elizabeth being buried in St Francis Cemetery in Munjor, KS. If anyone could assist in finding this gravesite, it would definitely be appreciated. Thanks, Michael

Bertsch - Bronx - Woodlawn Question

I came across a photo of a grave for "Bertsch" at the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. It's so striking, I was curious about the family and have been able to find NO information at all. It's not listed at FindAGrave for Woodlawn even though it appears to be a large group and internet searches have turned up nothing. The best online photo I've found can be seen here:

http://www.pellegrinlowend.com/woodlawn.html

It's one of the last photos on the page.

Any help, ideas or information would be very much appreciated!

Howard Benevolent Society & Grant Question

I am in the process of beginning a preservation & restoration project for a rural pioneer cemetery that has been abandoned. It was not affiliated with any particular church to my knowledge.

One of the goals for this project is to research how the cemetery was originally organized. I found that the Howard Benevolent Society of Boston, MA owned the property & designated the area as a cemetery shortly following the first burial. I have begun my research on the society & have a fairly good start. I was wondering if anybody else has ever found ties between this organization & cemeteries.

Also, I have noticed on the various threads that there has been mention of obtaining grants for such projects. I have noted matching fund grants at our state historical society. I am looking for other options as well. When searching on-line, I noticed most grants for cemetery restoration were state specific. Does anybody have any ideas about where else I may search for information?

I would appreciate any information and help.

Best regards,
Wendy J.
Help to identify Gravestone Engraving

I'm trying to identify an engraving found on a headstone from 1878.

The symbol appears to be a standard two point compass with three interlocked rings between the points. The compass is similar to the logo for the Masons but there is no ruler or G. The rings are similar to the logo for the Oddfellows but there are no letters inside.

Has anyone recognize the symbol or know where I might be able to learn what it represents?

Thanks
Has anybody ever heard of this?

OK fellow students & genealogy enthusiast. I went to a local public Cemetery District today to find out who I would talk to regarding transcribing their grave site information to the California Genealogy website http://cagenweb.com/. Well, I now know why the Cemetery District has not been transcribed before. The woman in their office got in my face, shook her ink pen in my face, and told me "the District will not allow any transcription to the internet!" She spent the next 10 minutes scolding me while I tried to explain it was NOT something I was getting paid for or something I wanted to increase her work load. I was very glad to make as graceful an exit from her office as possible.

She also told me only "family members" are allowed to take pictures of the grave sites otherwise I could be sued since the stones belong to the families! Wow, ask a simple question ("Who should I talk to about this") & get chewed out & threatened.

My question is; can I really get sued for taking a picture of a grave site & posting it to the internet? It’s not like I’m getting paid to do this project it’s volunteer work for an all volunteer website. Many cemeteries around the country have already been transcribed, with & without photos, and are listed on the internet.

I have been doing genealogy for years and have often been helped by people who live geographically closer to my ancestors than I do. As many of you know there are websites dedicated to genealogist who volunteer to do research in their area for people who live to far away to do it their self. I volunteer on a number of them. I wanted to give something back by providing greater access to the information in my county. Now I’m worried about being sued for taking a picture of a grave site.
UNION CEMETERY, BETHELEHEM, PA - transcription Sarah McHose MAST

Does anyone know of a transcription for the UNION CEMETERY in Bethelhem, PA - located on E. Church St, at the end of High street. Am trying to find inscription from tombstone of Sarah (MC HOSE) MAST(1776-1854). Her grave is located in the Moravian section near the UNION CEMETERY gate. It is very obvious because it is only unique, upright stone in this section. I have pictures but the inscription has almost completely vanished. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Gravestones with "In Memory of"

I feel that I should know this, but was it/is it the habit of bereaved families to have a gravestone created for a loved one, have it placed in a cemetery with no body, to simply act as a memorial to that person and to serve as a place to go to in order to honor or "talk to" that person. I am not referring to a soldier or a missing person or something along those lines.

I have found a gravestone dating to about 1850 that I believe may be for a family member, but it is states away from where the individual died, was erected about a decade after the person is said to have died, but family members were living in the area where it was erected at about the time it was erected.

Arkansas, Emanuel A. Rarey, d. 24 Sep 1892 near Little Rock, AR

Emanuel A. Rarey, d. 24 Sep 1892 near Little Rock, AR. This is all I have to go on. This is how it was written in my gr grandmother's obituary in which she died in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana 1902. Emanuel A. Rarey was my gr grandfather; b. 1858, Indiana; the son of Daniel Rarey; married Alice Randall 12 Aug 1880, Howard County, Indiana. The records indicate that my gr aunt Dora V. Rarey was born in Arkansas, 15 May 1892. At the time of his death there were seven children to this marriage, all under the age of eleven. They were poor, so probably no headstone. My gr grandmother and all of her children travelled alone back north after Emanuel's death to her hometown of Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana. I'm hoping to find a death notice, a death certificate, or a death record.
Jefferson Co., OH and OK cemetery records

While looking up cemetery records for Jefferson Co., OH on rootsweb.com, I found that the persons listed in this database for OH were not buried in OH, but OK, VA, TX, and MS. Why is that? I went to rootsweb.com to ask this question and they referred me to another link which actually brought me around in circles until I finally ended up here, including the help link. So I figured I'd leave a message on this message board and maybe I'll get an intelligent answer?

TERM IN CEMETARY RECORD

I'm trying to find the meaning of the term "dual assimilation" in a cemetary record as follows:
"Ruth was born 23 Jan 1921and buried 24 Jan 1921.Her burial rcordb says: COD dual assimilation. Roy was born 23 Jan 1921 and buried 24 Jan 1921 and COD dual assimilation. Both of these. babies were interred in a single lot."
It's obvious that this is a set of twins who died at birth and were buried together. Does "dual assimilation just mean they died at the same time?

Mt. Carmel and Odd Fellows Cemetery

First question: Is there a person in Mt. Carmel who can be contacted regarding Mt. Carmel Cemetery? I visited there last week, was walking around for almost 2 hours and didn't see a single living soul. Not even a grounds keeper.

Second: I know that the Odd Fellows were somehow involved with my great grandfather, prior to his death. When he was put into the hospital, it mentions them as the party responsible for admission. Even though his wife and other family were living. His death certificate says Mt. Carmel as burial but I cannot find any headstone or records to prove this. Does anyone have Odd Fellow Cemetery records to do a look up for me?

Cornelius Williams - died Sept. 23, 1923.
Wife: Lizzie (Carl) Williams - died c. 1926
Getting Close to ANSWERS!!

I was wondering if someone in the Owen County area or who knows where Moxley, KY area is could perhaps take a picture of my great-great-great grandfather Henry Carter who is buried in Carter Cemeter off Twin Creek Road, about one mile from Twin Creek-Moxley Road intersection. That's the directions in the Eternal Rest cemetery books from Owen Co that someone emailed me. Henry Carter's burial plot is Cemetery #185 and was born sometime in 1788 and died in 1859. His wife Lizzie (Elizabeth or Betsy for nicknames) Webster/Carter was born in 1809 and died somewhere between 1880-1809. I am hoping someone who is close can take a picture for me and confirm their gravesites are there. Im not sure where Elizabeth is located but perhaps she is close to Henry Carter. Other records from churches they might have attended would be wonderful or military/marriage records for Henry Carter. I did find out Henry Carter enrolled in the military in 1818 according to his pension. Please someone provide me with gravestone pictures and any church/land records.

Thanks for your help

-Robert

I have tried findagrave.com and searched other places and I cannot find my Great Grandparents.

My grandfater was James Costa (added "Bertuca" later) and he died around 1927-29. No one knows when he was born.

My grandmother was Angelina (or Angeline) and she was born around 1895. I was told she died sometime in the 1960's. She was re-married to James, her first husband was Anthony Cuda (can't find him either) and he died around 1915.

I was told all 3 were both buried in PA, they lived in Turtle Creek PA. I have tried searching everywhere, if anyone can help, it would be very helpful.

Thanks
Hello
I am researching some air men who flew with the 401st BG.
I found some death rosters on ancestry , but I have a question about it.

As I understand the first code ( number ) on the death roster is the name of permanent interment site.

I adopted 3 graves at Margraten Cemetery and saw that all those rosters start with 4601, that would mean Margraten, Netherlands.

But could any one ex plane me how I can find the cemetery when I have a code number ?
Is there a list with numbers and corresponding cemeteries ?

If so , I would be very happy if anyone could show it to me, it would mean that I can find the grave sites of the men who I am researching.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it

Andy

Need to find my Great-Grandfathers Grave

Hello,

I have a problem. My Grandfather took me when I was little to his Father's grave. I remember it very well. I passed that information on to my Mother and Aunt, and they have went to the graveyard. No grave was marked with his name. They then went to the City Hall, and they looked in the grave yard's records. No record of him being buried there. They have asked thier cousins on thier Father's side, and they say that he may be buried elsewhere. They are having the newspapers in the county searched for an obit, and are talking to the funeral home to see if they may still have the records.

How should we proceed if these lines of investigation fail? I have no more ideas on what to do after that...Could someone please help?

Is this a pioneer grave?

I would appreciate opinions. There are two mounds of yucca plants next to each other setting about 70 yards behind an old farmhouse in an unkept field. I am wondering if there could be pioneer graves under these yuccas. I can find no grave markers. The mounds of yucca plants are raised slightly above the surrounding land and the soil seems to have more gravel than the surrounding soil. The owner of the property said I could have some of the yucca plants and while I was digging up a few I began to wonder why someone would have planted them back there.

Confederate Cemetery in Punta Gorda, Belize

There is a small cemetery across the street from the public Hospital in Punta Gorda Town, Toledo District, Belize (formerly British Honduras) that is said to be the final resting spot of Confederate sympathizers who left the US after the Civil War. There are three unmarked graves and four graves that include inscriptions. The names and dates are:
Louise Alix Watrous, b. 21 Aug 1847, d. 10 Jul 1936
William P. Johnston, b. 4 Oct 1817, d. 25 Jun 1878
Pierre Perret, b. 30 Jul 1818, d. 27 Jul 1872
Norbert Sidney Perret, died 28 May 1935

Her tombstone inscription indicates that Louise Watrous was born in St. Charles Parish, LA.

I hope this helps someone.

Tony Jordan
Huntsville, AL

Recently we visited a cemetery where some of my ancestors and their relatives are buried. The stones date from the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's. Through neglect, many of the stones are covered with moss or lichens making the inscriptions difficult, and in some cases impossible to read or photograph.

Is there a recommend method for cleaning them?
Thank you.

I have a general question on cemeteries. I often see single letter square stones often on part of a larger plot and wonder what they usually mean. I always thought they were the first letter of the first name of a baby that had died, but someone told me it could be for a child of any age. Someone also told me those were for stillborn births.

how to plot or map out a cemetery

I am volunteering to transcribe our old cemetery for our church. I have completed the transcription, but know the disrepair of many of the old stones from the 1800's. I realize that there are many that are already gone and many more soon to follow. Our cemetery was never mapped or plotted out and I am wondering what suggestions anyone can give on the appropriate way of doing this...short of purchasing actual mapping software. I want to make sure that the headstones that are there now can be accounted for for future generations.

Looking for other places than EGreenwich Library

I have contacted the Public Library in East Greenwich, Rhode Island in hopes I could find some burial records about a Charlotte Keach, buried at Historical Cemetery #38 - she died March 13, 1849 and her gravestone says, "wife of George." Since Charlotte Keach's headstone is very close to Almira BRIGGS Keach's gravestone I believe that this Charlotte was one of my anscestors. There are many George Keach's and I really need to find out what Charlotte Keach's maiden name was! Can anyone suggest any other places to look for burial records in Rhode Island (East Greenwich) for the year 1849?

The librarian at the Greenwich Library could not find any other documents, other than the one I told her that I had, Bruce Campbell MscGunnigle's book, "East Greenwich, Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Inscriptions."

I am searching for a burial place somewhere in Virginia for James Caldwell Belvin. Born 1865-I don't know when he died. The family story tells of him coming to Maryland in 1885, Beaver Dam, Md. and marring my grandmother Mary Anne McDermott. He probably left Maryland sometime around the turn of the century. I think he returned to Virginia and re-married someone else. I am the daughter of his youngest son, Harry Bernard Belvin.

Suicide is not a pleasant subject. Can anyone shed any light on the customs of the 1857/58's in how such a death would be handled and dealt with in those days. Further, where would the person (In this case a young mother) have been buried? Inside the cemetery - or outside? Would there be a record of her death? Headstone? Her husband was a well known Preacher with the Reformation Church.

I know I have a lot of questions, Or, if you can direct me that would be wonderful.

Thank you so very much for any help!
On the tombstone of a relative, John KLINE b 26 Jun 1868 and d 12 Jan 1897 buried in WV, there is the following poem:

The roses may fade,
The lilies die.
But flowers immortal
bloom on high.

I did a Google search and found that it appears frequently on tombstones but I have not been able to find a source reference for the poem.
Reviving old Cemetery

The Honey Creek Cemetery in Rochester Township, Racine Cty, Wisconsin is not church owned. The Earle Family legally deeded the land to the COMMMUNITY of Honey Creek in 1881. As such the cemetery has been under the care of Earle family members and several volunteers. Sadly Mr Earle has now passed on. One of the volunteers contacted people with relatives in the cemetery and held a meeting. Elections were held for officers with future meetings upcoming. I'm one of those officers. We have a ton of questions and really don't know which way to go. We do not have any money, but we do know when a lady in Florida passes, the cemetery will come into a GREAT deal of money. The board and officers were formed to make sure the future money will not be eaten up by IRS, etc., but left for the cemetery. If anyone has any suggestions, we are open to all and anything. I can be contacted directly at geno4search@yahoo.com. Thank you very much. C. Rogers Vice President, Honey Creek Community Cemetery.

Barny & Elizabeth Nation Riley Cemetery information

Barny Riley born 1824 in Ohio and Elizabeth Nation Riley born 1832 probably Indiana but may have been recorded Illinois aer missing. Need help finding where these g-grandparents are laid to rest. We are at a standstill! We know this family left Linn Co. Iowa for Linn Co. Missouri around 1877. They are shown as living in Linn Co. MO on the 1880 census report. Then we've lost them. We have a photo that puts them in the Vernon Co. MO area possibly in pre 1890, but there is no date to confirm and we haven't received any feedback regarding the photographer. Their daughter however, Mary Ann Riley married Albert Mason Smith, and their first born daughter was born in 1898. Since Albert Smith was a long-time resident of Vernon Co. we speculate that they may probably have met there in Vernon Co. and married. They lvied in Nevada until they died and are buried at Newton Park in Nevada along with their daughters. Newton Park records say the parents of Mary Ann are said to be from Ireland, but we know that is an error. We haven't been able to find Barny & Elizabeth on record as being buried in Vernon Co. or Linn Co. Mo. So where are they, we wonder? They seemed to have gravitated to Linn Counties, so we thought we would search Linn Co. Kansas which is straight across the line from Vernon Co. Mo. but don't see them on record there either. They also had a daughter Ellen Riley who married John Elwood Smith. They are buried at or around Leavenworth, Kansas. Could Barny and Elizabeth be there? If there is anyone out there who spies their names on any cemetery records, we would love to hear about it. Thanks to anyone wanting to help.
Help Identifying Symbol

My g-grandfather's gravestone displays a symbol that looks like a shield with perhaps light emanating in the middle and something that looks like arrows. To the left of the shield is a "C" and to the right "A". He was an englishman who immigrated to U.S. in his fifties in 1906. He died in 1927. His son's grave displays the typical masonic symbol. Is this shieldlike thing masonic? Been searching and have found nothing yet. Any help appreciated.

Question on making a cemetery list. Please help me ;-)
Dear friends,

I intend to create/put available a list on the web with all the British people who have been buried at St James Cemetery, a British colonial cemetery in Porto, Portugal, Europe.

Should I forward Ancestry.com a plain text file, or just advise them of a URL where that list could be available ?

Further, I also want to take photos of tombstones inscriptions. Where can I find advice on doing that ?

Is it preferable to create a stand alone website with the tombstone photos ??

sorry to bug you with this questions, but anyway thanks a lot for any advice.

regards
Carlos Moreira
Porto, Portugal

Strange Poliadh Obelisk

In the cemetery where a lot of my relatives are buried there is an large Obelisk. It has the following inscription on it:

S + P
F. Malenki
CZL GN41ZSP
1882-1927

Rodzina Wroblewski

It looks like somebody named Malenki who died and a member of the local Polish Falcons. The family mentioned below that is mine. My family never was wealthy so why would they pay for a grave stone for someone else? I do not know if the Malenki was a priest or something like that. What does the S + P mean? This is by far the biggest monument that my family has. What is the deal? Any ideas?

I found this on my grandfather's marker. I know the "sua moglie" is "her husband" but I am totally stumped by the "R.D." It seems as if it must be an abbreviation of Italian words, but would appreciate any help with figuring this out.

reference to cemetary

I am really new at this. I googled a family members name and a line of military service information came up as well as date of birth/death, spouse, etc... I clicked on the reference number that showed the military information came from source no. 98 which listed the cemetary where the family member is buried as well as "canvessed by Debbra Szymanski, 22Jan, 2005". I want to know if I can access the source and how? I have been searching for my grandfathers military information, and I would like to know where Debbra Szymanski got this information? I cannont imagine that the cemetary alone has it? Please help me if you can?

hi all, i have an ancestor who is buried at the old north church and i'm wondering how i can get any burial records they may have for him. i've contacted the church directly a few years ago and they said they have the original record but since it's so fragile they can't photocopy it for me. would a copy made prior to this time be available somewhere else? anyone have any ideas? thanks very much! nikki
