Just discovered that a second cousin 4X removed was taken to Gratiot Street Military Prison.

We have a number of people both in my family and my husband's who were POWs during the WBTS, but stumbled upon some additional information on Edmond today that I'm hoping you can help with.

Remarks: To be imprisoned at hard labor for the term of ten years at such place as the Comdg. Gen. may direct. The proceedings, findings and sentence in the case of Edmond B. Sweat, a prisoner of war are approved. The prisoner shall be sent under guard and delivered to the Comdg. Officer at Alton, Ill., with a copy of this Order No. 83, Hdqrs., N. Dept., Cincinnati, Ohio, Nov. 24, 1864, July 21, 1865, Transfd. to St. Louis, Mo. (Gratiot St. Military Prison) Spec. Order No. 150, dated June 21, 1865.

Whatever could he have done to warrant 10 years at hard labor? What happened to him after the war? Is there somewhere where I could get copies of the proceedings that sent him to Alton & Gratiot? Could he have died at Gratiot?

Great big fat mystery that I'm wanting to solve.

Thanks!

Lisa
