Suggestion for finding Law Enforcement Personnel

One way is to contact the Department directly. Ask for the Media Spokesperson's Office. Then ask if they keep yearbooks. A lot of Departments do. There is usually someone in that bureau that keeps an archive pretty much up to date.

You may also want to contact the Training Academy for the particular police department. They also have some records and usually VERY interesting archival photo's of graduating classes. San Francisco Police Department, for example lines their walls with vintage academy class graduates.

Good luck with your research!

Rebecca :)

Letter to Gov Runnels

My great grandfather, A.J. Haralson, wrote the following letter to Texas Gov. Hardin Richard Runnels in 1859:

January the 4th, 1859

Honorable, and
Dear Sir,

You perceive from this that after I was appointed Agent for the State of Mississippi in the Case of the Regisition [Extradition?] for Stuckey, I went and used all the means in my power to have him arrested and I regret to say to you that I met with unreasonable resistance. I regret to have to inform you that the officers in that county, instead of trying to arrest him, sent him word that I was after him and in less than 3 hours he had an armed force around his house and, even worse than that, 3 of the party rode up to me and demanded the warrant and had I of been by myself I was informed they intended to have killed me. He swears that he will kill any man that attempts to arrest him and his clan swears to protect him under all circumstances. You now see how the matter stands. All I ask is a chance.

I don’t wish to sacrifise my life nor any other person’s without a show. If you will proclaim him an outlaw to me and invest me with authority to keep all armed persons at a reasonable distance that I may think necessary, I will take him or he shal quit this state. I have said all that I deem it necessary to say on the subject. If Your Honor is not satisfyde with the evidence before you, I can refer you to men whose word can’t be doubted. Your Honor will I hope cause the necessary instructions to be forwarded to me immediately. I have the honor to remain with high respect your most humble servant.

Does anyone know who Stuckey is? What kind of "Agent" is this and who would have appointed him? Is there documentation somewhere for this appointment?

My great grandfather kept a very low profile and there is little known about him except that he was born in NC and his father was born in VA.

B. F. Marshall was 1st sheriff of Murphys CA in early 1850's, then second sheriff of Calaveras County. We have the appointment papers for both positions. Family lore says Ben was a Deputy US Marshall before coming to California. He also served in the US Army in the Mexican War.

Anyone out there have any definitive information and history of his service in the Mexican War or confirm his service as a Deputy US Marshall?

Ben originates from Louisville, KY and could be related to Charles Marshall, Aide-d-Camp to GEN Robert E. Lee. General Lee's farewell address to the Army of the Potomoc was penned by Charles Marshall (then COL Confederate Army) and later found in his personal affects in Louisville.

Officer rosters, IL, past 40-50 years

Does anyone have any idea, or possibly a web site connection, on how to access department rosters over the years? I have several relatives that were law officers, and I am trying to find the years they were active, and for what areas, as well as other officers that may have worked with them. I am looking for a site or address that could help in the state of Illinois, that would encompass the last 40 or 50 years. Thanks.

In my research of the Long Creek Cemetery, Sunnyvale, Dallas county, Texas for the 150th anniversary, I have found 3 City of Dallas Police Officers. All would have served about 1910 to 1930: John Will Allen, Cornealius Franklin Isbell and Samuel Franklin Lovell. I am seeking information on any others buried at Long Creek Cemetery and information on how/where to search for information on these 3. Their correct services dates(what I have is from census information) and any information on their service records and possible awards.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been asked to research the families of those buried at Long Creek Cemetery, Dallas County, Texas for their 150 anniversary. I have started a listing at. http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=longcreek

If you have any information on the families buried there please contact me. Visit the page and see if you can offer additions or correction to the information. Any information or possible sources are welcome. Information for unmarked graves is very important.

The Long Creek Cemetery Association website is : http://www.longcreekcemetery.com/

To receive our quarterly newsletter email your postal address to longcreekcemetery@hotmail.com
Deposition of William H. Woodcock, police officer, Marysville, CA 1857

Excerpted from the California Legislative record for 1858

Exhibit No. 7

Wm. H. WOODCOCK, of Marysville, being duly sworn before the Committee, deposes:

About the middle of last July, I arrested, in my capacity as Police officer, at Marysville, a man convict [sic] of grand larceny at Coloma, by the name of Edward PHELPS, alias Dick TURPIN, who I knew had escaped from Marin State Prison. I confined him in the station-house for about a week or ten days, and could have arrested him before had I thought it was necessary. On the day of his arrest I wrote to Gen. ESTELL, directing the letter to "Gen. ESTELL, Lessee State Prison, State of California," stating the fact of his arrest, description, &c. Not receiving any answer to same, I wrote to some of my acquaintances at San Francisco, who informed me that I would not be paid the expense of keeping and returning said prisoner, and I released him. Since that time I have seen several other escaped convicts, but I could not pay the expense of returning them from my own resources.

W. H. WOODCOCK

Sworn and subscribed before me, at Sacramento, Feb. 18th, 1857. Geo. H. ROGERS, Chairman

Lawmen who chased Butch Cassidy

My family has a story (as many families do)that my Great-Grandfather was a lawman who help chase Butch Cassidy. He died at an early age so it has been hard to find out much about him. He lived in Utah near where Butch grew up so don't don't if story just came out of that or if there is some truth to it. I also have a pic of him on a horse looking as if he could have been a lawman. Anyway, should I look under Pinkertons or the railroads or both?
Appreciate any advise as I've never tried this kind of research.
Thanks
Renee

Am looking for information on Patrick Deane/Deen, who was a judge in the United States and who went to jail for unknown crimes, no earlier than 1908 but could be as late as 1978.

Very vague, but I don't know much about him other than that, except that he was born in Co. Kerry, Ireland, probably in Lixnaw, any time between 1888 and 1908. His father, Jeremiah, was born near Anascaul, Co. Kerry, Ireland in1868, and his mother was about 18 when they married; unfortunately, I don't yet have specifics.

Am not really expecting anything, but maybe some crime buff out there may have heard of him.

Sam Sapp - High Sheriff, Georgia

Hello,
I am searching for a Sam Sapp. I'm sorry, I have no dates for him at all really. All I know is that he was married to my great grandmother, Sophronia Bussell Sapp from Irwin County Georgia, b. late 1860s to early 1870s d. 1928 in Clermont, Florida. When I found Sophronia in the Irwin Co. 1900 census, she had 4 children but no man there. My family says that Sam abandoned the family, although I don't know when. I do know that their youngest son was born in 1899 in Irwin County and their oldest was born in the 1880s. On person has said that Sam Sapp was High Sheriff (I'm not sure what that term means "high") in Georgia and went to Florida where my grandfather and family was then and settled. My grandfather never spoke of his father so we have no other information on him. Anyone with any information, please email me or reply here. Thank you! -Tonya
