John Ash/Pretty Boy Floyd - Family legend vs facts

Legends passed down through the family relate that John Ash (b. 1878 Young Co TX; lived in Washita Co. OK; Eddy Co, NM; Childress Co, TX; Potter Co, TX)was part of the group that ran with Pretty Boy Floyd. I have been unable to find any trace of the Ash family before 1870 in MO. It is possible that Sadie Ash who ran a refuge for outlaws in KC, Missouri might be related since John's father was m. in MO. An elderly relative claimed that a photo that was in New Holland Magazine had a photo of John Ash with other gang members. How does one separate the fact from fiction?

I have the attached picture of an execution by hanging of George Black by Sheriff Charles A Yund, Albany County, Wyoming. Yund was my great grandfather. I have his account of the capture of this gentlemen and the investigation of the murder for which he was convicted. If you are interested in this information for your family tree, please let me know. My searches for Mr. Blacks family members have not been able to go farther than his wife, who died a month later in Laramie. Thank you!

Sam and Thomas Edward "Black Jack" Ketchum gang

If you are kin to the Thomas Edward "Black Jack" Ketchum family line, or if you are interested, in general, about the history of outlawry in the late 1800s in the American Southwest, a new book by Jeff Burton has been published by Palomino Books that is excellent. Jeff wrote the definitive book about the Ketchum gang in the 1960s and has continued to research and expand his expertise about the gang for 40 years. His latest book, THE DEADLIEST OUTLAWS, is definitely not a rewrite of the first book. It is a detailed history of the gang, and all of the various members of the gang. The book is over 500 pages in length. It tracks their entire outlaw history in great detail including their movements around the southwest, and the when, where, how of all of their crimes. Everything is backed up with literally hundreds of specific references to newspaper articles, court records, historical excerpts by contemporary writers of the time, and other sources. There are more than 50 photographs in the book. I find it an amazingly detailed and factual look into the life of the gang, and a pretty good history of 1800s law enforcement, and Southwestern life in general.

The book was published in England because the author, Jeff Burton, is a member of The English Westerners’ Society (formerly, The English Corral of the Westerners) whose charter describes it as a non-profit making, educational organization of those whose special interest is a preservation of the historical, ethnological and cultural background and evolution of the American West. It issues publications and holds meetings; and exists to promote and assist similar activities connected with the study of the American frontier. Jeff has made many trips to the U.S. over the years to research the Ketchum outlaw gang.

Several well known outlaws who rode with other gangs (the Wild Bunch etc.) rode on occasion with the Black Jack Ketchum gang, and all of these connections are spelled out and documented in the book.

Only 100 initial copies were published, due to the costs of publishing such a relatively large book for a fairly small number of academicians, historians, libraries and genealogists interested in the detailed information contained in the book.

I am the great grandson of Sam Ketchum, but I have no financial interest in the book. I am simply relaying the information. You can purchase a copy by contacting

Jeffrey Burton
Palomino Books
58 Albert Street
Gosport
Hampshire PO124TY
England

For information about the gang, see:
http://www.hal-pc.org/~berrys

I'm looking for info on my great, great grandfather. His name was: John Marion Custer - Born in Marion County, Alabama in 1864. I have been told that he was an outlaw for a while who hid out for about 10 or 20 years. He ended up in Texas. I have been unable to find any info, but I have a record of him in Texas and I actually have a picture of John and his wife taken in San Antonio, Tx dated 1948 when he was around 84 yrs. old.

Any help will be greatly apreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

Murder in Walla Walla

I am trying to find information on a murder, escape, and child abduction that took place in Walla Walla, Washington. The murder happened on Jan 1, 1861 on the Wiskey or Hog Eye Creek putting into the Touchet River, the victim was Isreal D. Davis the accused Alonzo J. Beebe. Alonzo was arrested and placed in the jail in the city of Walla Walla, around the end of March or begining of April he escaped. He and his family, father Philo, Brothers Hiram and George all dissapeared taking Laura daughter of Alonzo by Mary Cantrall whom he never married with them. She was 6 years old at the time. Mary did go through the court system in an attempted to get her daughter back. Where would I find information on this event? Were there newspapers in the area? I would like to know if Alonzo was ever caught and returned to Walla Walla to face trail.
I'm looking for a family named KEMP that was killed after the civil war by a group of men... carpetbaggers, jayhawkers, deserters, gangs, or whatever/whoever.

Is anyone aware of a list of people who fell victim to these types of groups after the war? The killing could have taken place in IL, MO, KY... generally that area.

There is a huge KEMP population on the western coast of the middle of IL, but it seems to me they would be too far north. Any thoughts on that?

I've searched census info and tried to find KEMP families in 1860 and compare them to KEMP families that weren't around in 1870, but am having no success because of the huge number of KEMPS! And of course, there's the possibility that KEMP could be KEMPF, CAMP, etc. The only clue I have concerning the ages of these KEMPs is by the lone surviving family member who was 7 years of age at the time. Anyone have other ideas on how to find this family?

Thanks,
Barbara
brakeshot@comcast.net
Daniel Troutman (Oct 23, 1817-Nov 14 1880) of Pennsylvania was murdered by the "Romberger boys". I would like to know who exactly the Romberger boys were, and why they murdered him. Apparently I'm related to the Rombergers, but he wasn't.

Roy Sample of Casper, Wyoming and Denver, Colorado

Looking for information on Roy Sample, mentioned in my grandmothers notes on her family:

"Roy Sample was killed. He was shot, I believe. He was quite a wealthy man. He had several theatres in Casper, Wyoming. I really never knew about his death.
Roy Sample and his wife, Maria, never had children. He too was medium build and short; not dark like his father and fair complexion."

Roy Sample may have had gang connections. He was killed in his twenties. Grandma last saw him in Denver while she was in nursing school.

Roy was the son of William Atlas Sample and his second wife. He (Roy) was born perhaps around 1870-1880. I have not been able to find census records to verify the ages of William's children. William had three children with his first wife: Julia, Rena, and Walter. He had four children with his second wife: Eva, Leah, May and Roy.

I have hit a total dead end on this line.... just try searching for "Sample" in any genealogy forum and you'll understand why... it brings up samples of genealogies!

Thanks for any help!

Thomas MULLIGAN, b.1892 Ireland, cowboy outlaw?

I heard today from a distant relative the story of our lost relative, Thomas Mulligan, who was born in Bellanacurra, Killasser Parish, County Mayo, Ireland in August 1892. Thomas came to Montana with his brother John about the 1910s. Eventually John settled and married in Oakland, CA, but Thomas continued on his way, possibly working as a rancher or cowboy, and may have ended up in Arizona or New Mexico. We have a photo of Thomas all decked out in Western gear - chaps, hat, you name it, circa 1925.

Apparently a bank wrote to Thomas' niece, Rita Hassna, about thirty years ago to tell her of an abandoned bank account in Thomas' name. It only had a hundred or so dollars in it. (Rita just passed away last month, sadly.) Rita's son thinks it is the Bank of Arizona, but it could be the bank of Phoenix or the Bank of New Mexico - it was a place of southwestern origin.

Apparently there is a legend surrounding Thomas that he supplied guns or horses to Pancho Villa, and his disappearance hints at an untimely end. How would I go about looking into this odd new legend?

Thanks for your help!
Susan Daily

I have researched the Ketchum genealogy for 30+ years, but I'm now changing my research focus to the outlaw aspect of Sam and Tom Ketchum. Sam was my ggrandfather. (I have their genealogy back to Edward Ketchum b1765). I would appreciate any sources for accurate information about their crimes (newspaper articles, books, public records, etc. Especially oldtimer's stories)

Charles Knox Polk Wells- Missouri Outlaw died in prison

I found Polk Wells out of Buchanan Co., Missouri on my family tree I am sorry to say. He was the son of a Confederate Officer named Berryman Wells. He married young to Nora Wilson and when he could not make a living, went into back robbing and no telling how much more. There was a book written about him by Nora's second husband that was anything but flattering. Polk was a real low life. When he died in Federal Prison in Iowa, 27 bullets were removed from his body. I know there was a child by him born to Nora but no name, sex or date has ever been found. The child died before age of 2. I really would like to find out where the child was buried.
Just found the "Marlow Gang" on a family tree. Seems as though they were 5 brothers accused of horse stealing. Amob caputured they and hung 3 of them, the other two went to jail and escaped. they later becauce Texas marshalls and eventually settled in Montrose, Colorad. The John Wayne movie "Sons of Katie Elder" was bought but by the time they got through making it, little was left of the original story.

Hello CLANTON Family. Considering that I am a direct descendent of Abbigail "Abby" (Clanton) Holt who is my 7th great-grandmother on my mother's mother's side.

Nathaniel Holt was married to Abbigail/Abigail/Abby/Abba Clanton and had the following Children:
Drury Holt b. December 29, `759 in Albemarle Parish, Virginia
Elizabeth Rogers, d. February 16, 1835
John Holt
Nancy Holt
Molly Holt
Lucy Holt
Elizabeth Holt
b. November 21, 1767

I come out of Nathaniel Holt and Abby Clanton's son Drury Holt and his wife Elizabeth Rogers... who is said to be related to the great Will Rogers and Tiana Rogers, wife of the renound Sam Houston.

Abbigail/Abigail/Abby/Abba Clanton is related somehow to the Clanton Gang. Henry Clanton is either her direct kin or was the brother of her direct kin.

I'll update this as I find out more. I lost some files when the PC crashed...
Sam Bass Gang And John Riley Flowers

John Riley Flowers 1863 AR-1916 TX, told family members that he was the original "Kid Jackson" of the Bass gang. While research shows he probably was NOT Frank Jackson, John DID serve time in Rusk Pen, Cherokee Co., TX from ca 1896 -ca 1905 for something. I am still trying to find out what it was.
In Denton Co., TX (Sam Bass H.Q.), there was a Flowers family. The widow Mary (Unknown) [Harris] Flowers, widow of Wyatt Flowers of Franklin Co., AR (who had a treason charge leveled against him in Fort Smith AR, but never served any time as far as I can tell). They did have a son named John Flowers born around the same time frame as John Riley Flowers, but I need further proof that their John is my John Flowers.
John Riley Flowers is listed on both the 1900 Comanche Co., TX Federal Census (with his family with a note in margin of "In Penitentiary"), birthplace AR x 3, and on the 1900 Cherokee Co., TX census, incarcerated, but listing his birthplace as OH x 3. Interesting, huh?
All the family knows is that our John Riley Flowers had a sister named Kate (Wyatt Flowers aso had a daughter named Catharine whom they called Katie, but had several other children who would be full siblings to John, as well as several half-siblings to John).
John Riley Flowers also told the family that when he was going to marry Mary Ann Cowden, daughter of James Cowden and Matilda Henry of Benton & Washington Cos., TX., that his mama sat him down, told him he was born a BUSTLE/BUSSEL and that he had a choice of names.

Newcomb/ "Black Jane/ Tom Newcomb

I'm looking for my G Grandfather:J.W.(John) (John William) Newcomb. On one census he said he was born in Kansas; on another he said Missouri. Someone else said Alabama. The story is " a Newcomb brother killed a Federal officer(or soldier) & 3 Newcomb brothers fled home, my G Grandfather being 16 years old. One brother supposedly lived in Indian Territory, "got in trouble with the law & couldn't go out of Indian Territory". He was supposedly married to a Cherokee? woman named "Black Jane". I know that there are about 40 Newcombs on the Dawes Roll. But I haven't gone to, or written the archives to look them up. My G Grandfather's Father's name may of been Will Newcomb. Also I have looked for info. about a Tom Newcomb in South Dakota, shot & killed Custer's chief scout. A historian said it was a stand-up shootout in the door of a dug-out. My G Grandfather was born in 1833(supposedly!). Thanks!

I saw your posting about outlaws. My gfather, Joseph Monroe Baker (born Lampasas 1892), was a cousin of Pink Higgins. I am trying to find out more about my gfather (son of Henry Baker and Callie Edwards) and thought that you may have more background info on Pink.

Also, I heard Cullen's name, but that's all. Could there be a connection here?

Thank you for your help!

On my father's side (Merritt) we have been told we are distant relatives to Bat. My father stated his grandmother, Thelma Masterson-Gregg was a cousin to Bat Masterson. Thelma was my grandmother's (Malita Jane Gregg) sister. I would like to know how I can confirm this. I have pictures, one with whom I believe may be Bat standing in front of numbered blocks, such as for a "booking" (arrest) photo (I do know he was arrested and charged at one time then found not guilty). I also have a post card sent to my great great grandmother believed to be signed by Bat. Please let me know what my resources would be for ACCURATE information only.
THANK YOU.

Texas Horse Dealer Shot c.(1880-1900)

Daddy says the Prewitts were a pretty mean lot. Grandpa had one brother named John. Dad says he had a pretty bad temper. The story goes that Grandpa and Uncle John were working in an oat field. They had their horses tethered some ways away. Some man (Daddy doesn't remember his name) who had had a run in with John turned Grandpa's horse loose - thinking it was John's. They happened to see him so Uncle John got on his horse and caught up with the man and told him "If I find Jim's horse, OK. But if I don't I'll kill you, you S.O.B."
That same evening, John was shot in an ambush - but not before he saw his assailant. He lived long enough to extract a promise from Grandpa to avenge his death. For two years after that Grandpa and this man waylaid each other, never taking more than potshots. The man was a horse trader and sneaked into town occasionally to do some horse dealing. Grandpa had a "lady friend" who informed him of the movements of this man. Once when he came into town Grandpa followed him out and waited until he made camp for the night, then called him out and killed him. Grandpa rode his horse to death getting back to town. Before he was missed a friend brought him a fresh horse before he got into town and they rode in together cool as could be. Most people suspected who had done the killing but it never came to trial and most people believed it was just reward.
1906 NM duel

Does anyone have any info on this:
Last Saturday at the hour mentioned, U. Francis Duff, superintendent of schools for Luna county and assistant principal of Deming Public School, stepped to the edge of the sidewalk at the postoffice corner and called to W.H. Dickey, principal of Deming Public Schools, who was driving west on Spruce street, “stop there”; Dickey at once stopped and as Duff was advancing on him with a pistol called, “see what that man is doing, stop him”, at the same time springing to the ground on the opposite side of his buggy and drawing a pistol. Instantly two reports that were so close together that, for a time many who heard them declared there was but one rung out, and Prof. Duff lay on the ground with a bullet would in the head a little to the left of the center of the forehead, and Prof. Dickey, shot in the left front side was running toward Henry Meyer’s Meat Market at the opposite corner of the square , as Dickey ran he looked back at Duff lying on the ground and exclaimed, “My God, he is dead. I didn’t mean to kill him.”
This is part of an article from the Deming Headlight of 3 May 1906.
Duff was married to Emma Simpson, sister to my husband's greatgrandmother, Fannie Simpson Crawford of Ohio.

I am researching the families of the The james Bros. and Billy the Kid. My father had always claimed a relationship to the james Bros. somehow through his grandfather who was a friend(this is true, we have documents) of Pat Garrett. I would like to see for myself the ancestry of these two families. If anyone can help me, I'd be greatly appreciative. Please email me directly at : Smile@endor.com

Thank you so very much in advance.

Al Spencer Gang

I am looking for information on the Al Spencer Gang of Oklahoma. I believe my grandfather, Charles "Charley" Toman was a member of the gang. I also believe my grandfather was involved with Spencer during the last hold up of the KATY Flyer in Oklahoma in 1923. I need to locate info concerning Spencer gang members. I also understand that my grandfather was involved in a bank robbery in Coffeyville Kansas in the 1920's, not the famous Dalton Gang robbery. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

With him are two of his witnessess, Brushy Bill Roberts, 90, center, who claims to have been a member of the James Gang, and Col. James R.
