I have been researching the murder of my triple-great-uncle, John Andrew Becker. He was from St. Louis and was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago when he was killed there in 1917.

I found a short article that is (I think) about this murder in the St. Lousi Westliche Post, a daily German-language paper.

Would anyone be willing to translate it for me?

--Josh

Schmalstich

Hello,
I'm researching my maternal line, which includes Heinrich (aka Henry) Schmalstich. He immigrated to the US in 1852 at age 12, and settled first in Newark, NJ, and then Brooklyn, NY. He was supposedly a hunchback, so was not involved in the US civil war.

The only area of Germany I've found this name is Hanover. I believe he and his mother, Sophia Schmalstich, left via Bremen, but I'm not sure. His mother remarried soon after arriving in the US, so I'm wondering if she had family/friends in Newark, NJ?

His father's name was also Heinrich Schmalstich. I've found a family with this name in NJ, but they are distant cousins. Anyone have anything on them in Germany?

Any ideas on how to proceed in Germany?
Thanks.
Kristen Drake

I have some stories written by another relative and she states his middle name as Iner but another relative states that it is Ingwar. I have been trying to find out how Ingwar would be pronounced. I was wondering if when it is spoken it would sound like "Iner" and that would be the reason it shows up like that on the census.

I am hoping that someone who speaks german would know.

Thank you

Becky

Where did the Germans live?

There were at least two neighborhoods in which one was likely to find German immigrants in the 19th century, and my German ancestors lived in both of them at different times. One area was known as Cabbage Town, which, if I have it correctly, was the area running several blocks north of Washington Avenue, and extending in several blocks in each direction from Northern Boulevard (now Henry Johnson Boulevard). There are two Lutheran Churches that I am aware of in that vicinity, but I do not know how old they are: St. John's and St. Paul's. Another neighborhood was around Southern Boulevard and Delaware Avenue. I didn't notice in your post if you were familiar with these areas. If you are, I could give you some landmarks. I do not know the name of the church in that area, but I would be interested to know, in case someone reading this can enlighten me, since it is where my ancestors would have attended while living there.

I believe that most of the Irish Immigrants in Albany lived in what were two separate and distinct neighborhoods - North Albany and the North End. My Irish immigrants migrated in the second half of the 19th century from Van Woert Street, which I believe would have been the North End, to Hall Place, which is now considered Arbor Hill, but at the time I believe was considered North Albany. If anyone can offer clarification, I'd appreciate it. I have ancestors who were married in St, Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, which still stands there, but it is abandoned. I believe that the church that stands there now was built in the latter part of the 19th century, but there was a St. Joseph's somewhere in the area in the 1850's, perhaps on the same grounds.

I think I have them on the SS Main landing at Baltimore on 4 November 1889.

I would like to locate them in Germany, but I don’t even know which port the left, or even if it is in Germany.

Any guidance will be appreciated.
On the mat frame of the photo it has the name & address of the studio, as well as a small Swatzstika embossed on it. The lady in the photo died in 1932. Does anyone know why this Swatzstika is there? We have several other photos from this studio, and this is the first one to show this, and I am curious as to why its there. Could the studio owner have been German? Or is there some other reason its there? Any help greatly appreciated, Thanks, Frederica

I would like someone that has, or is very familiar with German accents, to show me how to pronounce a surname.

The time period is the mid-1700's. If a person in that time period in the U.S.A. heard a person from Germany say his name, and wrote it down as Johannes Kank, and in another source, wrote it down as Johannes Kauk, how would the surname possibly have sounded coming from someone with a German accent in the mid-1700's?

I'm trying to determine if it sounded somewhat like "konk"?

Can you help with our search for WW2 Children stolen by the Nazis?

Were you sent as a child from Germany at the end of the war to Australia, Canada, USA or New Zealand? Are you now in your sixties or seventies?

During WW2, the Nazis stole thousands of ‘aryan looking’ children from countries they were occupying as part of their Lebensborn ‘germanisation’ programme, and placed them with German families. At the end of the war, UNRRA (the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) traced many of these children and housed them in re-settlement camps in Germany while they tried to locate their original families.

Tragically, most of the children stolen by the Nazis from Russia, Hungarian Ukraine and the Baltic border regions were prevented by a US government decision from returning to their original birth families because of Cold War politics. Instead, they were resettled in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA between approximately 1946 and 1948.

A British TV company is searching for any of these individuals, who are probably now in their sixties, for a documentary film. If you think you can help with our research, please contact Researcher Jo Bartlett by email: joanneji@yahoo.co.uk
Schmalstich

Hello,
I'm researching my maternal line, which includes Heinrich (aka Henry) Schmalstich.

Germans from Russia

The principal line I am researching (Maas) were from Emmental, Bender, Bessarabia, Russia, near Krasna. Most of the German families stayed together in the same area. Some of these people went to Canada or the U.S.in 1913-1922; others went to Germany in approx 1941; a few went to South America. If any of the listed surnames are familiar or if your families came from that area of Russia, I would like to correspond and exchange information with you.
Edna

Karl Fischer / Carl Fisher - Germany to US: WI, NE

Seeking info on Karl Fischer / Carl Fisher.

Karl Fischer was probably born about 1852 in Frienwalde, Germany. His father may have been Johann / John Fischer, a baker. Karl may have had two brothers: Charles and James and / or six sisters.

At age 21, he was working as a farm hand for Zam Zam in Caledonia, Wisconsin, USA, and had changed the spelling of his name to Carl Fisher. I have found he may have left Germany to escape conscription into the German Army.

On Jan. 28, 1878, he was married to Bertha August Garska / Garske. They moved to Central City, Nebraska and bought land near the town of Archer. They planted trees which are still known as Fisher Grove. There they had four children: Anna Adalia, Rose Maria, William Anton, and Martha Helena.

In April 1885, they moved by covered wagon to south of Rushville, Sheridan County, Nebraska. There the following children were born: Henry, Carl, Benjamin, Elsie, Frank and Mabel.

Carl received his citizenship papers in April 1896. He died November 4, 1903 in a wagon team runaway.

I have not been able to confirm the date or location of his birh, or anything about his parents or siblings, etc. in Germany, or if any of his family came to the USA. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Help with translation for Confirmation Certificate from 1834

I have the original confirmation certificate of my great great grandfather. The name on the certificate is Wilhelm Ludwig Theodor Schultze. The only words that I can really decipher on it are his name, "Dom=Kirche", Berlin, 19 March 1834.

I believe that he was confirmed at the city cathedral of Berlin.

I will attempt to transcribe what is written in German, fraktur alphabet, (expect lots of mistakes):

CONFIRMATION=SCHEIN
Wilhelm Ludwig Theodor Schultze

s/? [cannot read handwriting ]

I have no idea of where he was born, though I assume it was in Northern Germany. Does this confirmation certificate hold any hint? Could anyone be confirmed at the Dom=Kirche or was it limited to a specific parish/area? Any information that could be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Wilhelm Ludwig Theodor Schultze was also known as Theodore Schultze after he immigrated to NY. He died in NYC sometime in 1862, though I haven't been able to find any evidence of his existance in census records etc.

Thank you!

Roberta Schultze

Ernest
My mother was Sylvia Belling. She was born on 14 Sep 1917, and was one of 8 children born to William Belling. William was himself on of 11 children, and was born in Cape Town around Dec 1886. His father was Richard Belling, born 31 May 1860 in Essen, Germany. Richard came to South Africa on the ship Uranus at the age of 17 with his parents and 3 brothers and one sister. They arrived in Cape Town on 6 Dec 1877.

The only "Dorothy" I can find in my family tree could not possibly be your mother, due to the age etc. So you must be decended from one of Richard's brothers (Carl, Otto or Franz).
Emil GROEGER/South Africa

I´m searching for Emil GROEGER (GRÖGER), my granduncle. He was born in the area of Allenstein (now Olsztyn) in formerly East Prussia around 1900. He was a craftsman and left Germany in the early 1930s for South Africa, then settling in Pretoria. He came back for a visit to Germany only once, right after 1945. What ever happened to him? When did he die? Did he have a family and descendants? Does anyone know? Thanks for report.

I have two German born women in my family tree who were named Fredericka. Both of these women used the name "Rachel" at times. They appear on various census records as either Fredericka or Rachel. Does anyone have an explanation. Were Frederickas nicknamed Rachel by the Germans for some reason?

ENGELLENNER MYSTERY - PLEASE HELP!

Greetings fellow Engellenners from Down Under. My name is Max Engellenner and I desperately need help to solve the puzzle of our Engellenner ancestry. Can you help? I can trace my family back to Bredstedt in Schleswig Holstein, year 1855. My great-great grandfather was Hans Christian. We believe he was born near Keil. He tragically died in a work-camp for the poor on 17 August, 1855 aged 23. He was a carpenter's apprentice from the Holstein region. The same year Hans died, his son Ernst Christian was born to Margaretha Hedwig Detlefsen in Bredstedt. He was an illegitimate, and we think, only child. We have no info about Ernst other than him arriving in Australia on the ship Grandee, via the port of New York on 4th March, 1877. Ernst was naturalised an Australian citizen in 1897. Our family is descended directly from Ernst. He died in 1927 and is buried at Coburg, Victoria in Australia. The things we would like to know are (1) the parents and siblings of Hans Christian, (2) the circumstances which left him in a workcamp for the poor at 23 years of age, (3) who raised his son Ernst, and where, (4) whether Ernst spent time in America before coming to Australia and if he has any relatives there. I have a comprehensive family tree for Australia and will gladly assist you with any info. Any info will be much appreciated.

My 2ggfather was named Frederick Williams. He came directly from Germany and I am pretty sure his name wouldn't have been Williams there. Does anyone have any ideas aside from Wilhelm or Willms? Frederick was born 18 Jan 1824 in Schortens, Jever, Oldenburg, Germany. He emigrated to the USA about 1848. He met Karoline Clara Mast on the ship from Germany and they married 12 Oct 1848 in St. Louis, Missouri. I think they might have landed in New Orleans and taken a steamer up the Mississippi finally ending up in Hancock County, Illinois. They had 10 children, who I have all the information on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Joan

Even though there are somany way to spell this VERY uncommon name, I search every where. We are stuck on Daniel. I was hoping to ask if that book of yours only contains the South African decendants, or may contain some of ours. Please write back soon. Daniel Praetorius was the brother of George Otto. And George married henriette Lahman in 1864 a year after they moved to the US from a port in Germany. We are mainy searching for Daniel.

I'm especially interested in any information on Friedrich or Anton Monsch. Friedrich was a German revolutionary in the Offenburg area right around 1845. This got him into trouble and he left, becoming a refugee in Gerstheim, then in Strassberg, France in 1849. His brother, Anton, was my gr. gr. gr. grandfather, and it was said that he had also gone to France (possibly around this same time period), then came to the USA. Any information at all on the Monsch family would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Melody

Frederick Fach in southern Ontario, Canada

My gggrandfather and gggrandmother Frederick and Mary Fach came from Germany to the Dunnville, Ontario area about 1880 and had children Christina Lucinda, Christian and Julia born starting 1875. Frederick died and was buried in some unknown location in Ontario, before Mary and the children moved to Gratiot County, Michigan in the late 1800/early1900s. She and the children may have lived in the Berlin/Kitchener area before moving to Michigan. I have searched Sarnia, Walsingham and Berlin/Kitchener cemetaries, but have not found him yet. The Berlin area has a large German population from immigration in the 1880s. Berlin was renamed Kitchener during WWII. I am looking for Frederick's final resting place in Ontario, and what port of entry/migration route the German ancestors typically took to reach southern Ontario. I look forward to share information if we have things in common. Thanks George g.bailey@attbi.com.

I have just started researching my mother's side of the family. I can't seem to find any information on my grandmother. Her maiden name was Kathrina D. (Dorthea, I think) Heuer. She was born in Germany (city unknown) and immigrated to America (not sure which year). She married my grandfather, Hans George Sierk. I'm not sure if they were married in Germany or if they were married in U.S. (Illinois). They settled in McClean County, Illinois and later moved to Kosciusko County, Indiana. 8 children were born in Illinois. 1 (Ernest) was deceased as an infant (cause unknown). My mother is Elsie (Sierk) Long, born in 1903 and still living. Doesn't know much about her mother's past in Germany, only that she spoke of Meldorff, Germany. The Hans G. Sierk family is listed on the McClean County 1920 census. Mother says a brother of Kathrina Heuer, Peter Heuer, settled in or around Burwell, Nebraska, but I don't have any dates on him. I would appreciate any information or help.

Descendants of August Kroeger of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

I am trying to find the descendants of my grandfathers brother August Kroeger who was born ABT 1876 the first son of Klaus Kroeger and Katharina Delp. Klaus Kroeger died about 1883 and Katharina Delp married Dietrich Robcke or Robecke and they had several more children. My grandfathers name was Johannes Kroeger(1879-1942)married Luise Henne(1876-1965). August Kroeger married and had a son and daughter. I can only assume that this family line is still in Germany, but I do not know for sure. Is there anyone who can help me?

NOTE: Johannes Kroeger was a muscician on steamships and during WWI was stranded in America. His family joined him in 1924. Johannes Kroeger's oldest son, my father Herbert Emil John Kroeger who was born in Bremerhafen, Germany is alive and well at the age of 90 years.

IGerman Meeks?

My great grandmother was Katherine Meek. My Dad used to tell us that she spoke German, and that originally the name was spelled Muk with an umlat over the "u" and when ancestors of that name migrated to the US the spelling changed. Has anyone ever seen a spelling like that in German Surnames? We have traced back to a David Meek born in Pennsylvania, but seem to be stuck there.1794-1855.

Greetings,
I would appreciate anyone who has any information on the possible relatedness between the names 'Colin' or 'Collin' and the name "Nicholas." I would like to know if it is something like a Highland Gaelic or Lowland Scots diminutive form of Nicholas. I am told that is is most likely a variatiion of such. Also, I would like to know if in Highland, Lowland or Old German there was any connection between 'Michael' and 'Nikolaus'.

We are trying to track down which line some very elusive kin arrive here in the South from. They are either Scottish or Germanic, at this point who knows maybe both. We are finding several different and unique possible spellings and what we think are variations of family names.

Thank you for your help and information in our search.
Dara

Dara A.
