Searching for slaveowner of Levias'

I am searching for the slave owner of the Levias family in Mississippi. I am stuck at an ancestor of mine by the name of Nelson Levias. He and his wife Missouri Samuel (maiden name) lived most of their lives and died in Newton County, Texas.

The 1870 and 1880 census says that they were born in Mississippi. They were neighbors with a George Farr who was also from Mississippi so I'm thinking that possibly they all came from the same place. Since Newton County Texas is on the Southeastern border of Texas which is closer to Louisiana, I'm guessing that maybe the counties in Mississippi where he came from could have been Wilkinson County, Adams County, or Harrison County.

I'm not quite certain how to go about finding the slaveowner so any help would be greatly appreciated especially since we are planning to have a family reunion! It seems the older people are really interested in knowing this information.

John Coleman: Could this be the same person?

I am doing research for the Coleman and Dixon family from Mississippi.

The person I am concentrating on is my great grandfather, John Coleman. I have located him on the several census records. I found him on the 1880 census and he is listed with his wife Frances and 4 of his children.

Here is the 1880 census info

John Coleman
Home in 1880: Crumps, Yazoo, Mississippi
Age: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851
Birthplace: Mississippi
Relation to Head of Household: Self (Head)
Spouse's Name: Frances
Father's birthplace: Mississippi
Mother's birthplace: Virginia
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: Farmer
Marital Status: Married
Race: Mulatto
Gender: Male
Cannot read/write:

Blind:

Deaf and dumb:

Otherwise disabled:

Idiotic or insane:

View image
Household Members:
Name Age
John Coleman 29
Frances Coleman 20
Willie Coleman 5
Mary F. Coleman 4
Benjamine A. Coleman 2
Jacob Coleman 2M

I looked further back to the 1870 census. I found a young man named John Coleman who is about 18 years old at the time and he looks like he is with his mother and bothers, sisters, and possibly a niece. Here is the 1870 census info:

John Coleman
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1852
Age in 1870: 18
Birthplace: Mississippi
Home in 1870: Vicksburg, Warren, Mississippi
Race: Mulatto
Gender: Male
Value of real estate: View image
Post Office: Vicksburg
Household Members:
Name Age
Juda Coleman 50
John Coleman 18
Mary Coleman 16
Silas Coleman 14
Jane Coleman 20
S J Coleman 1

Is it possible that the John Coleman who is on the 1870 census can be the same John Coleman on the 1880 census. I want to be sure that this is my great grandfather before I add it to my family tree.
Seems Wm. is my ggr grandfather and little 6yr old Eddie will be my gr grandfather.

I also have an obituary for a Gaddis Walton(1894-1962),youngest son of Bill & Ida Walton, wife-Laura Walton.
In a great aunt's obit there is mention of one uncle Wren Walton and one aunt Lydia Fields of Memphis TN, inferring a brother & sister of Rev Edward Walton.

My grandfather's (Edward D Walton Jr) parents are Rev.Edward D Walton Sr and Beatrice Walton. They had ten children. I believe everybody was born in Bolton MS. Then they came to Chicago. I only knew of four-Granddaddy, Uncle Ivory, Auntie Josie And Aunt Ida. It was my understanding that the others were already deceased before 1963. And as of 2002, these last four are now also deceased.

Josephine Walton Rubin had two daughters, Geraldine and Doris Jean, both deceased. Ivory Walton had two sons, Ivory Jr and Arthur, both deceased. Arthur had two sons, Darrell and Lamonte Walton, who may be out there somewhere. And Edward Walton Jr had three daughters, Yohauntas(deceased), Josephine "Jo"(deceased), and my mother, Jeanette, age 76.

If there are any other long-lost cousins out there and you can add to our family tree, please don't hesitate to contact me at psblkwll@yahoo.com.

I was looking for info on the Gants in MS and came across your message through a Google search. My grandmother's name is Alice Gant and she died in 1952 in Shaw, MS which is in Bolivar County. I know that the Gants were landowners during '30s, '40's and '50's. I saw that you referenced "Alice," it could be the same Alice which I doubt, but could be her daughter. Email me back if you want to discuss further.

Marcus

Gov Zebulon Vance

I have received some new information and I'd like to know if there's anyone who has knowledge about the slave holdings of this family. My grgrandmother Lucy Vance had a son by what family says her x-shaveholder. Her son's name was Ed Vance born, according to 1910 Mississippi census March 1880. I believe this is probably a guesstimate. Ed was half white and he stated he was 17 in 1910. This is when he showed up in Lucy Vance's household in Ms, with 3 sister's already there..Genie(who I have heritage questions about), Annie and my grandma Adell Vance. Lucy lived in Shaws Creek/Johnston Sc but between 1870 and 1900 she relocated to Monroe Ms. In 1930 she gave her true birthplace as SC. All other census information after 1870 said birthplace Ms up until 1900 and the name was spelled VANC. In collaborating with some new found cousins the name of Gov. Zebulon Vance and his wife Harriet Hightower Vance had been thought to be the father of Lucy's brother Elbert Vance and maybe other siblings. Because I knew what Ed Vance looked like from a picture, I'm sure there was someone white who had a liason with my grgrandma Lucy whether it was wanted or not. Families always keep secrets, but after thinking about it being related to someone in a political venue may be something that needed hiding..until now. So I am asking for help in untangling this mystery, Are there any papers out there that would tell about his personal holdings. Gov. Vance was a pretty wealthy lawyer/senator and Governor.

Hello Maryqcontrary. Mississippi has the Chancery Clerk's office which sometimes has plantation indexes and deed information for these places. (at least the one in Wilkinson Co. does). I would suggest that if you can make your way to Lowndes Co. it would be worth you time to research this with the Chancery Clerk's office. I was able to find an unlisted plantation in Wilkinson Co. where my great-great grandmother was interned. This planatation is never mentioned in an historical context at all. Well, happy hunting Mary! The Chancery Clerk information can be located by googling it or visiting USGENWEB.ORG.

I have a relative that I'm assuming was a slave to one of the Billup families in the area. From what I found by doing a search on Google for Billups Plantation in this county, I came up with some information from an unusual source. This is what I found:

Billups Gate Plantation founded by Thomas Carleton Billups 1852. He owned the following plantations:
1. The Billups Mims Place
2. The Billups Whitfield Place
3. The Billups Tuttle Place
4. The Billups Hearon Place

I hope this helps. If you find any information regarding the slaves of the Billups family in this area, it would be of most interest to me.

Thank you,

I just spoken with my mother to see if either of those names rung a bell and she tells me yes. She remembers Johnny & that she remember Louise having a birth mark on her face (one side of face lighter than the other as with the eyes). She also wanted me to give a few names to see if you can make any connection/one remembers from your research: Anise, Carrieda, Mamie Lee, Robert, Teola are a few of the children of Willie (a.k.a. Wilson Jr) & Emma Gillespie.

This is what I have on Ausbins Gillespie:
From the 1900 Chickasaw MS census it shows Wilson Gillespie & Palestine (Wise) Gillespie as the parents with the following children:
Robert Lee (died young)
Urby (Hervie in other census)
Orsby (Ausbins in other census)
Wilson (my grandfather-a.k.a Willie)
From 1900 through the late 1920's the more siblings were born and they lived in several counties of MS before each child moved on: Alex, Walter, Bessie, Johnny, Annie, Amanda, Albert & Addie B. The counties/towns of MS were - Bolivar, Tunica, Egypt & Chickasaw was the home county of this family.

Please keep in touch by email @ afisher.1@hotmail.com
