My GGgrandparents were Jeremiah W. Myers 1809-1894 born near Baltimore, MD and Mary Ann Harper 1817-1904 born VA. His father was Phillip b 1763 MD. Jeremiah's brothers were John m Sarah Pearson, Thomas m Harriet Harden, and Phillip Wilkes Jr [born Faurquier Co, VA or New Market, MD 1805] m Joanna Spacy. All moved to the Barnesville, Belmont Co, OH area and Jeremiah later owned a farm in Chesterhill. I am looking for more info on them and their ancestors. Their children married Norman, Male, Mayle, Stonaker, Lett, Dickinson, Norris, etc. These are mixed race families.

Native American/English families: Ellis, Mathews, Turner, Carter, Palmer

Hi,
We have uncovered info. that several of our allied families are of mixed race.
JABEZ STEPHEN ELLIS was b. 1830 Saratoga, New York. His mother, SARAH, was b. England 1790 and was kidnapped during an Indian raid. She had Jabez and sister ANN ELLIS TOMLINSON in 1828.
The family is next found in Grant, Wisconsin in 1850. I suspect they were of Oneida heritage, and may have relocated with others from the tribe in Wisconsin. Ann and her brother returned to New York throughout the years to visit family.
These families are all related to Ellis and may also be of mixed race: Mathews, Carter, Turner, Palmer, Tomlinson.
Does anyone have any of these?
Thanks
Julie S.

I have 3 Matthews/MATHIS sisters, born 1825 - 1835,in Ga., that married Native American men. First names of these sisters unknown, names of husbands unknown, dates & places of marriages also unknown. The last place these girls show is 1840 Cass Co.GA, with father WM.MATTHEWS and siblings. These girls had brothers William H.(born1818,Ga. wifes name Susan Russell) and John R.(born 1821,GA. wifes name Margaret Black)These girls were wrongfully disowned by the father for the marriages. Possible names for these girls could be,ANN,MARY,MARTHA,ISABEL,RACHEL,JANE,ALICE or VIRGINIA, as the brothers named daughters these. Any info on the above sisters will be greatly appreciated, as we are having a very hard time finding anything on them. Help! Thanks

Some of my ancestors are Black Norwegians. They are a group of people who came to America obviously from Norway, but they had strikingly dark skin and peculiar facial features unlike anyone from the caucazoid race. They appear to be native americans. In fact, they were not served drinks in bars in wisconsin because every bartender believed them to be native americans. Has anyone else heard of the black norwegians?

Nancy was my slave gg-grandmother of African/Indian descent (Creek or Seminole tribe). Born Nov. 1824 in So Carolina. Was moved to farm in Macon, GA until about age 38, then relocated to Lake City, FL until her death (no verif. of the date). Looking for info on her family in So Carolina, i.e. exactly which tribe, and her parents names. Her husband was Asa Richard, born 1817. She is listed on Georgia 1850 slave schedule as "Nancy Richard" so she had to have married Asa before leaving SC. She gave birth to my ggrandfather, Thomas Sherman in 1846. Any info appreciated. Mary Ann Brown)g.g.g.grandfather: Isaac Boydston (m. Rhoda Taylor in Pike Co. and Nancy Waldon in Pickaway Co.), and possibly g.g.g.g grandfather: Joseph Boydston. Very little information is known about our Boydston family. I've been told that the settled in Ohio in the late 1700's/early 1800's from Virginia possibly. Some of the areas in Ohio are Scioto, Pike, Ross and Pickaway Counties.
Native-American Hiles or Nelson's? PA-MI-WI-ND, 1898-1921

One or both of my maternal genetic grandparents were Native American, to some degree, based on family lore and physical evidence.

We have what seems to be my mother's original, pre-adoption, 1921 WI Birth Registration that lists her mother as Dorothy HILES born circa 1902 MI, and her father as Russel NELSON born circa 1898 PA.

Her mother named my mother Dorothy Muriel Hiles so she had some sentiment toward her.

The Birth Reg lists Dorothy HILES as Telephone Operator in Green Bay WI, and Russel NELSON as Linotype Operator in Ft. Yates ND.

I have searched US Census and cannot identify them for any locales or periods listed. And have looked at state and Native American census where available online. Have seen Native American Nelson listings and heard of Native American Hiles - so I know YOU are out there.

Need more information - got some? Email welcome. Thanks, Thos. tomcat@midcoast.com

"Mulatto/tri-racial (Euro-American Indian-African) JACKSONS from Covington and surrounding counties in Southeast Alabama, Northwest Florida and Richland County, Ohio, (1830s to present).

We are researching mulatto families in Covington County, Alabama. We have a special interest in the Pea Ridge Community of the Conecuh River Township in Covington and Conecuh Counties, Alabama. These areas had a large percentage of mulatto slaves prior to the Civil War. After slavery, these people settled together and married.

We descend from the “Jackson” surname. Many of our descendants lived in Covington and nearby counties before the Civil War. After the Civil War most “Jackson’s” continued to live in Covington well into the late 1930’s. Our search also extends to Escambia and Oskaloosa counties in Florida, where many residents from Covington traveled in search of employment, while others went to Missippi and Mansfield, Ohio.

We would love to correspond with others that are researching mulatto families from these areas with the surnames below.

Thank you in advance for your invaluable help with our family quest.

Sharon

Surname list:

JACKSON
Beasley
Blount
Bradley
Briggs
Brooks
Cameron
Culliver
Daniels
Dees
Feagin
Hart
Henderson
Hewlett
Lewis
Marshall
McBryde
Robinson
Vaughn
Wilson
Wood

Black-Indians info

I am looking to see if there is any information that I can find on Black-Indians from South Carolina. My grandfather's surname was Owens; his father's or grandfather's surname was Marcus. I was told that they were from Florence County, SC, and that my grandfather's people were black-Indians. They were described as dark-skinned, black people who had so-called "good" hair. Would this describe some black-Indians accurately? I myself am from Marion County, South Carolina.

ELLIS FAMILY NY TO WISCONSIN: INDIAN ROOTS

Good day,
I am researching my gggrandfather, JABEZ STEPHEN ELLIS, b. ca. 1826 Saratoga, NY, who settled in the GRANT WISCONSIN area and married Susannah Carter in 1867. His obit says he was "half-Indian, but raised English." A family legend says that his mother, Sarah, was born in England and kidnapped during an Indian raid after arriving in the US. She bore children by her captor and was later released, when she married an ELLIS who raised the children as his. I have researched many ELLIS lines with little luck. I am wondering about Sarah's maiden name, the ELLIS father's first name, the tribe that Jabez is descended from, etc. If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would greatly appreciate any info.
Thank you

I am posting this message on the message board, as I don't have an email account for list use.

How conclusive is the DNA research method?

My paternal line is "Black Dutch," the origin of which is a mystery, but the line stems from PA mid to late 1700's into TN early 1800's...
Can these DNA researchers explain what is meant by "Black Dutch" in my family line (Indian, German, Sephardim, etc...)?

SMITH & SAUNDERS of Northeastern Kentucky

Attempting to find all information possible on my paternal tri-racial heritage. My father's mother's people all had origins in Fleming and Nicholas Counties in Kentucky. His mother's side were named SMITH and SAUNDERS.

My grandmother's (FLORA ELLIOTT SMITH YOUNG) mother was named ANNA BELL SAUNDERS (1872-1949). She's also been referred to in records as "ANNIE BELL." She was born in Sherburne, Kentucky to OLIVER ("Pappy Oliver"; d. 9/6/1910) and CATHERINE ("Mammy Kate"; d. 8/29/1901) SAUNDERS.

Anna's siblings included:

ROY, who married a woman named "NINA". I have no info on whether or not they had children.

ELLIOTT, who was unmarried, with no children. He served in the military, although I don't know where or when. My presumption is the Spanish-American War. He settled in Nogales, Arizona, where he died in the 1960's.

MARY LIZA, who married JOHN McBEE. They had three children: ROBERT McBEE (d. 1984 in KY); ELIZABETH (who married WILLIAM DUDLEY, and the names of their children are not known); and HATTIE (who married a man by the last name of GREENE; whether or not they had children is not known.

LUCINDA, who married a man by the last name of POTTS. I do not know if they had children, but presume that they did.

Grandma's father's side were the SMITH's. I don't know anything about my great-grandfather's side of the family. All I know about him is that his name was ANDREW JACKSON SMITH, and he was born 10/25/1860 in Nicholas County, Kentucky. His occupation was horse-breeder. He died 8/5/1946 in Sherburne, Kentucky, and is probably buried in the "Colored" cemetery there called "GILEAD." I'd like to know if my great-grandfather had any siblings and, if so, would like to make contact with their offsping.

I currently have a photo of ANNA BELL and ANDREW on my genealogy webpage. (Please allow ample time for loading.) More photos will be coming soon, including some of my grandmother's siblings and her Uncle Roy. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
