My great grandparents emigrated from Bohemia. I think near Prague. They settled in Detroit and owned a dry goods store in 1900. I'm looking for other family connections. Don't know when, but think around 1875.

Searching for a connection: Michael Chupek

My father died in 1976 and was born in 1916. I am one of his four children. My grandmother Anna died in 1984 in Pennsylvania. I don't know a lot about my background since they were both taken so young.

I miss both of them terribly and am looking for any information that will bring me peace.

My great grandfather, I believe was Josef/Joesph Chupek who was born in Czechoslovakia. I believe he came over to the USA in 1921 with his young son, my grandfather: Michael Joseph Chupek, Sr.

Any info would be appreciated.

Slovanska Lipa Society; Early Bohemians in Detroit 1850's

My ancestors Anton and Agnes Cinader were in the Detroit area by 1860 as I find them in the census in Detroit; they immigrated in 1853-4 from Bohemia.
Anton Zinader married Agnes Cusna 2/7/1855 in Detroit, according to early Michigan Marriages.
They were both born in Bohemia and immigrated to the US in 1854. Anton was born in 1818; Agnes in 1829. Anton died in 1902; Agnes in 1903, in Detroit. His occupation was listed as tailor in 1860 and 1870; by 1880 they were living in Greenfield Township, Wayne, Michigan, farming. Prior to their deaths, they lived on Sydney Ave. in Detroit; they can be found in the Detroit city directories. They are buried in Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit. I have pictures of their headstones.
Am looking for any of their descendents; have info and would like to share.
children
1. Martin Cinader b 1848 in Bohemia found in 1910 Los Angelas Census as Mortin Cinider; railroad engineer; ? married to Mary Helebrant in 1900 in Chicago, had two children, Alice and Arthur. ?Mary remarried Charles Vaught about 1905 and is found in the Chicago census with him and her two Children.

2. Catherine b 1855 in Bohemia (Kate): was listed as a tayloress in 1870 census. I cannot find her after the 1870 census: ?married, or deceased? (died 1891 in Detroit, domestic, Michigan death records)

3. John Snyder b 1861 in Michigan. changed name to Snyder at some point, after 1891 (my g grandf)married Julia Crookedacre (Krummenacker, daughter of Nicholas and Barbara (Hoper, Hopper) Krummenacker, also living and farming in Greenfield Twp in 1870 to 1880). Nicholas was born in Alsace in 1847. Barbara born in Michigan. Also Anton and Agnes are found in the 1870 Detroit census as Antony Schneider, John married Julia Kronemaker (Cromonocker, Krummenacker) about 1891 in Detroit; children were Elsie, Lillian, Walter, John, Mamie, Melvin.

4. Mary b 1860 in Michigan m Alexander Ptolemy of Wentworth Ontario, Canada, children were Clara, George and Hugh)

5. Rosa or Ellen "Nellie" in the Chicago censuses: b 1863 in Detroit, m John Waldie (lived in Chicago) who had these children: George, Charles, Arthur, Mable (Wolfe) and Esther (Economos); John and sons were Chicago city firefighters.
It appears the only descendent was from Charles, son Milton Waldie b. about 1912.

6. Agnes b 1870 in Michigan ? unable to find later

7. Mitchell (Michael) b 1857 in Detroit married Elizabeth Bellaby: Laura m William Diesing, Charlotte m. George Breitmeyer, Agnes m. Rudolph Nemecek, Grace m. Clarence Breitmeyer, Milo m Kathlene (?), William m Arlene Wentworth.

8. Charles b in Detroit married Amelia Hartwig; I have his descendents also.

I visited Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit last summer to find the graves of Anton and Agnes Cinader - husband and wife who I was surprised to find were not buried side by side but within this larger area; I was informed that the graves in this area had been owed by the Slovenska Lipa Society - from what I have been able to learn it was a society formed to preserve the immigrants way of life. The Cinadr's or Cinaders immigrated to Michigan around 1854, during the first wave of Bohemians and it appears a number of families were farming in Greenfield township during the 1860 -1880's. Can anyone provide more information about this society and if it still is present today?
Am looking for any descendents for are researching these lines or any descendents of early Bohemians to Detroit/Wayne county area who might be familiar with the Slovenska Lipa Society or its modern counterpart.

need help with translation from Slovak to English

Am following leads on my Grandparents, both born in Austria-Hungarian Empire...they claimed to be from Dobra Voda, Czech. Both came to America in 1900-1901. Anton Tomasovics and Julia Lukacovic married in New York 1903. While going through my grandmother's "treasures" I found a picture of her brother (he never came to America). I know it is her brother because his name is written on the back, however that is the only thing I can read...the back is completely filled with writing. Can anyone help me with this translation?

Correct spelling of surname and origin of surname

Still looking up family history for our tree, and having a heck of a time because apparently someone within records can't spell correctly. I am trying to find out first the correct spelling of my great grandmothers maiden name, and also am trying to find our her death information (also would like to find her husbands as well).

Her married name is Reckholder, but her maiden is hopefully one of these three: Ralbowski, Rabolfsky, or Ralbufski. Must be an American thing to not pay attention to detail! :^)

Just for extra information for you guys to help me (if you'd like to!) Her first name is Agnes and his is Joseph. On the 1920 census you'll notice that they had 9 children, which Hugo died of TB when he was in his 20's I believe, but I can't find any death data on Joseph, Hugo, Theresa, or Mamie (Mary in 1930 census).

Also, if you look at the 1930 census with the Reckholder name you'll notice now that Agnes is a widow while her daughters are all working. Instead of her home country being Hungary it's now Czechoslovakia (see as Austria is crossed out, probably just a basic mistake). Is Czechoslovakia considered part of Hungary is that what's going on? Anyhow, all your help is GREATLY appreciated on this matter!

-Gregg Black

Czech Surnames

To All,
Is there anyone out there who has any information or alternative spellings for the following surnames: PLACHY and GARLOTHY. I am a genealogist but have done all my research on my husbands german roots. I know practically nothing about these names. They are my paternal grandparents both of whom immigrated in early life probably in the early 1900's or as late as 1920. They are both decesased. the ramaining children know nothing about the family history. My grandfather's name was WILLIAM (BELA) PLACHY and my grandmothers name was IRENE GALOTHY. Her father's name was Frank Garlothy. Frank was married twice, once to MARY FAUX(FOX) and once to MARY KMETZ.. The Garlothy's lived in Windber Somerset Co Pa. and at one time the Plachy's lived in Mine 40 Somerset Co Pa. One of my grandparents was from Lucenec and one from Nitra but I don't know which is which. All remaining family members have no more information on them. I belive that WIlliam was born in the late 1890's . If there is anyone out there that can help me at all with this information please contact me. My father who was the middle child of 6 was born in 1925 so I am assuming they married in the late 1910's or early 1920's. I know that they were married in Cambria Co. Pa. I no longer live in PA, and rarely get back. Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Sincerely,
Phyllis Oyler

Looking for MRAZEK and NOVAK lived near IGLAU (Birnbaumhof)

>Hello from Austria,
>
>
>
>I´m looking for any information about MRAZEK and NOVAK. The only thing
>I know is that the NOVAK Family was living in Birnbaumhof near Iglau.
>They had a “Wirtshaus” there. The MRAZEK line came from the area around
>Znaim or Znaim directly.
>
>
>
>Maybe someone of you can show me the right way for searching.
>
>
>
>
>
>Greetings
>
>
>
>Dieter Eichinger
>
>
>
>office@ahnensuche.net
>
>www.ahnensuche.net <http://www.ahnensuche.net/>
I have been researching my Zahradka ancestors. My g-grandfather, Frantisek (Frank) Zahradka was born in Kladno, Bohemia in 1865. He came to the USA in 1893. He lived in Illinois and was a coal miner. He was a gifted musician and had a family band from about 1912-1920 in Pana, IL. His parents were Vaclav Zahradka and Barbora Jounglova. She was from Zbecno, he was from near Prelic. I am looking for any other Zahradkas who might be related.
Kacir, Gurek - Slovakia to IL to MI

Am looking for these families from Pana, Christian County. Jacob Kacir (probably not the true spelling) and Anna Gurek
(Grovcik and other spellings) came to Illinois from Slovakia (Anna maybe from Austria) prior to 1894. They had John b. 1894,
Jacob, b. 1895, Joseph, b. 1897, Anna, b. 1898, and Francis, b. 1900. After Jacob's death right after 1900, Francis was sent
to live and be raised by his maternal grandmother and Anna married Albert Lapsansky (later changed to Lapshan). Anna and
Albert had Stephen, Agnes, Mary and Albert. Ironically, when Albert died, young Albert was also sent to live and be raised by
his maternal grandmother. Mary was a midwife.
Some of the children moved to the Detroit, MI, area as adults. Steve and Albert Lapsansky changed the spelling to Lapshan.
Francis married Marie Pollak in Detroit October 1924.
Does any of this ring a bell with someone? Would love to exchange any info I've gleaned with "lost" family members. Patt

My ggf Josef Foral came to the US in 1881. His parents were Mathew and Mary Foral. Town unknown. I have located Forals in Brno around 1800 in the LDA ancestral file. In the ionline phone directory I located Foral/Foralovas in Brno and Prague. I've sent letters to them and have recieved responses telling that Forals live in Babice, Rosice and Pribram. Since the Czech Rep records are only in the archives there, I'm trying to reduce the scope of my efforts. Any suggestions? Josef Foral married Marguerite Steffel, her sister Dora married Joseph Skarda and Mary Katherine married Joseph Krumpos. I have some records that the Steffels were from Vienna.

Mlejnek/Mleynek/Mlynek

I have Mlejnek's in my family tree. They are not in my direct line. Mary Mlynek (as it is spelled in one document) married Charles Chaloupka in Guthrie County Iowa October 16, 1872.

Mary's parents, Waclav Mlejnek and Helena Mlejnek settled in Guthrie County, Richland Township, IA. Waclav was born in Bohemia (not sure where specifically) 9/13/1830 and died in Guthrie County, IA 9/8/1897. Helena also was born in Bohemia on 11/26/1833 and died in Guthrie County, IA 9/24/1893.

Hope this helps. My website is not completely updated, but you can view information about Mary's family at www.geocities.com/nchalou.

Nicole
