Irish Family Naming patterns for children???

I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask, but here goes anyway...
I have Irish Brothers Thomas & William, who both had big families in the early 1800's (11 each). The one thing I notice is they both have a son named James. It looks like William used family names when naming his children, not so much on Thomas' side. So I'm wondering if it a good bet that their father's name was James?
