Nancy, there was the 1848 Baden revolt to overthrow the Duke which was crushed by Prussian troops. That, along with poor weather and crop failures for several years, and over population led not only to immigration but aslo caused the State and communities to "export" the poor and unwanted citizens. My ancestors from the Scherzheim / Lichtenau area of Baden were part of that large movement.

Many came to Ohio via the Hudson River and the Erie Canal and tended to settle in a community of their own.
