Interested in corresponding with people reasearching any of these families. Bennethum, Laux, and Minnich were French Huguenots who had fled Germany in the 1600s. In fact, Laux is actually of Basque origin.

Several of these families (e.g., Schauer, Stupp, Lauck) were also 1709ers or NY Palatines who came to work a plantation in the Hudson River Valley for Queen Anne and then migrated to PA.

Danny R. Shearer and Shearer Family of Latrobe, PA

I am not sure if this is allowed or how this works, but I'm trying to find family info on my fathers side of the family.

I only knew my father for about a year back when I was about 10, (I am 27 now) and then he took off and I haven't seen or heard from him since. I met his father (my grandpa) once and I know he has a brother, who I believe was named Wally Shearer of WA state. My uncle (Wally) and my father both live in WA.. well, I'm not sure if they still do, but they at least did up until the mid-late 90's, I believe.

My father's name is Danny Rae Shearer and he was born on July 20th 1955 in Latrobe, PA. He was married for many years to a woman named Francisca Marie, but they divorced in the early 90's. He told me once that our family was Pennsylvania Dutch and that is where everyone lives, except for him and his brother. I have no idea if this is true and I have no idea how to even look into it. I can not find any information on this site or any others for my father, uncle or anyone else from his family. I would very much like to get in contact with him, my uncle or any other family members. I do not want anything from the family, other than to know more about it. Right now, I have nothing.. names, dates and photos would be wonderful! My husband and I want to start a family, and I want to be able to share this info with my children.

I can be reached here or at: Wicked_creatures@yahoo.com

Pennsylvania Morningstar Family

I am doing some research on the Morgenstern/Morningstar family. My 7th Great Grandfather was Johannes Morgenstern who sailed to America on the ship Mortonhouse. Does anyone know if the Md line and the Pa line are related by more than just the marriage of Anna Salome Morgenstern to Johann Philip Morgenstern? Does anyone know if the Pa line is of Jewish descent? Please email me with any info on this family at, weepingwillow311@aol.com
thank you in advance, Cindy

RUSSELL & BROSSMAN in Berks Co. PA

Recently I received the following information via a relation from a Russell genealogist, George Ely Russell. I was wondering if anyone has this Brossman connection in Berks Co. PA.

My 5th great grandmother is "Margaret" Anna Margaretha Brossman, also referred to as "Maria Margaret", and "Peggy", born Abt. 1734, probably in Berks Co, PA where some of her children were baptized. She married Abt. 1753 "Jacob Russell" Hans Jacob Rosell, baptized 3/16/1727-8 of Hefertschweil, immigrated 5/1/1743 from Obermettmenstetten to Berks Co. PA, the family later moved to near Keedysville,Washington Co.MD, where they had bought land in 1762.

Three of their children who were baptized in Berks Co:

(1.) "Jacob" John Jacob Jr Russell baptized 6/2/1754 by the Reverend H. W. Stoy at Trinity Tulpehocken Reformed Church, sponsors: Jacob Gasser, Maria Elizabeth Lesch (in present Jackson Twp, Lebanon Co. PA)

(2.) George Russell baptized 5/8/1757 at Stouchsburg Christ Lutheran Church sponsors: George Hollstein, Catherina Brossman (in present Marion Twp, Berks Co, PA). Bef.1790 George founded Russellville in Hopewell Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA.

(3.) Sarah Russell, also called Sallm(a), Maria Salome/Salley/Sally Rossel, baptized 6/7/1761 by Rev. H. W. Stoy at Trinity Tulpehocken Reformed Church, sponsors: Francis Brossman and wife Maria Salome

Other Berks Co. related information:
"At the auction sale at Tulpehocken of the estate of Henry Boyer on 13-14 April 1757, Jacob Rosel paid almost 2 pounds for a piece of barchet. Jacob Rosell’s name appeared on the list of taxables in Heidelberg Township, Berks County, for 1758. At Trinity Tulpehocken Reformed Church on 29 June 1760, Jacob Rossel and wife Margaret sponsored the baptism by the Rev. J. William Otterbein of John, son of Jacob Gassert. Rosell was naturalized at Tulpehocken on 11 April 1763."

I'm doing research on my 4th great grandfather Jacob Ried (Reed)--trying to link him to Hans Jacob Ridt / Reed senior and junior who arrived in Philadelphia, PA onboard the ship Samuel of London on 17 Aug 1733. Other families (Krebs Krops Crabbs / Bischoff) on this voyage from the Zweibrucken area will later marry into the Ried / Reed line.

Census data indicated my line settled in the Frederick County, Maryland area (1790), then moved to the Manheim Twp. area of PA. until moving back to Maryland in 1816.

Can anyone's research can shed light on my line? Thanks in advance.
Translation Assistance Needed from PA Dutch Family Bible

I am including a notation from the Sterbefalle or Deaths Listing from the Family Register of the family Bible of Nathan Haas and Esther Merkel of Berks County, PA. This seems to give the dates of death of Maria Anna Haas and Wilson Merkel Haas as listed at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&... These are 15 and 20 Dec 1851 respectively. The phrase "12 Monat" I think means twelfth month, and I think I see the word "gestorben" meaning died.

I need assistance in interpreting this. Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone know the ancestry of Nathan F. Haas of Berks County, PA?

I am interested in the ancestry of Nathan F. Haas who married Esther Merkel of Berks County, PA.

A possible birthday for Nathan is 18 Nov 1817 as listed in the Hilffrich Pastoral Records of Lehigh County. Morton Montgomery's 1909 Biographical Annals of Berks County (Lechner Family Page 1297) lists him as being from Mertztown PA.

Information on the marriage of Nathan and Esther is contained on the Trauungen (Marriages) column on the Family Register pages in the Haas family Bible. It says in translation: "On 14th September 1844 Nathan Haas was married to Ester Merkel by Pastor Helfrich". This is possibly the same person or a relative of the Hilffrich mentioned above.

Information on the children of Nathan Haas and Esther Merkel is contained on the Geburten (Births) column on the Family Register pages in the Haas family Bible. This family with surviving children 3 thru 6 is listed as being in Oley Twp. in the 1870 census. Children listed are:
1. Maria Anna Haas born 2/14/1846
2. Wilhelm Merkel Haas born 1/29/1849
3. Loiuise Emmeleine Haas born 1/14/1852
4. Hanna Catharine Haas born 5/20/1856
5. Fanny Susanna Haas born 4/21/1859
6. Lenore Florent Haas born 9/27/1864

CHILDREN:
1. and 2. Maria and Wilhelm
The Sterbefälle (Deaths) column on the Family Register pages indicates that Maria and Wilhelm died in 1851.

3. Louisa E. Hass (Loiuise Emmeleine Haas)
Birth: 14 Jan 1852 Place: Oley, Berks Cnty, Pennsylvania
Death: 2 Apr 1929 Burial: Bally Menn Cemetery, Berks Cnty, Pennsylvania
Spouse: John W. Stauffer

4. Henry Z. Moser of Bechtelsville was married to Hannah M. Haas of Oley on September 26th 1874 by Rev. L. Groh.

5. WALLACE L. LECHNER married FANNIE M. HAAS on 24 AUG 1878 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Wallace and Fannie had 3 children Samuel, Hannah, and Charles.

6. George Washington Moser married Eleanora Florinda Haas on 23 July 1881.

Note: The following is at rootsweb at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~paberks/cemetery/OleyCemeterySpangs...
Haas, Esther H. 28 Sep 1820 - 4 Apr 1904 Spouse: Nathan F. Haas
Haas, Nathan F. 18 Nov 1817 - 10 Jun 1893 Spouse: Esther H.

I have a copy of the Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Sign or Fraktur (I am not sure exactly what it would be called), it is a drawing made in 1828 of Davis Smith born 1808 listing all of his children with birth dates, marriage dates, and death dates. It also lists his parents as Connard and Sariah Smith. It has pictures and symbols on it, like rattlesnakes and circles with points on it. Is there a way to research this to show were he came from or would the symbols be common in certain families and be able to link to other Smith's that way? Davis Smith was living in Washington County PA. Also on the same headstone of a descendent of Connard Smith is the name of Otto Purson, died in the 1940's, I could not find that name or would that have a meaning of something else.

David P.
Want maiden name of Sarah, who married Jonathan Landis of Rockland Twp, Berks County, PA in the early 1850s

I am interested in knowing the maiden name of Sarah, who married Jonathan Landis as described below.

The 1860 census of Rockland Township Berks County, PA shows this family:

Jonathan Landis, 29, a day laborer
Sarah, 35
Ellen, 6
Elmira, 4
Sarah, 2

Jonathan apparently died sometime before 1870 (as there are no additional children, probably within a few years of 1860). The 1870 census for Oley Township shows this family living in Friedensburg:

Sarah, 49
Ellen A., 17
Elmira, 14
Sarah, 12

(Note that Ellen Landis married Henry Drumheller of Earl Township, Berks County, PA. Other married names are Elmira Yost and Sarah Plush.

Jonathan's parents appear to be Charles (Carl) Landis and Sarah Truckenmiller, who appear on p. 1279 of the 1909 Morton Montgomery History of Berks County. In 1850, this family appears in the Rockland Township census:

Charles, 46, a weaver
Sarah, 43
Jonathan, 19
Charles, 13
William, 9
Reuben, 6
Daniel, 2
Magdalena Drymiller, 80

SNYDER/LONG

Well, I have finally found Wm. Stover Snyder. I am in the process of trying to find his son, Wm.Stover Snyder Jr. Wm. Stover Snyder Jr.'s mother was Amelia (Long) Snyder. I believe Wm. Stover Snyder lived in Chambersburg, PA. or in Carlisle, PA. I know that they were married during WW1, because of the picture I have. On Wm. Stover Snyder's death certificate it shows his son provided the information for the Death Certficate. That was in 1947. It also gave an address of 1900 No. 13th St. Philadelphia, PA. I don't have very much to go on. Wm. and Amelia's son was born 1927 (?) Does anyone have a link with Amelia Long/Snyder or her son Wm. Stover Snyder Jr. Their son was my mothers cousin. Amelia and Wm. Stover Snyder Jr. will be the last link I need for my family line. Would appreciate the information. Marla

I Am looking for the connection between the Hoffmans and Deiblers of Lykens Valley, Dauphin Co. Pa. I am the 4G Grandson of Capt. Albright Deibler. My 3G Grandfather
Christian Hoffman married Sasannah Deibler, daughter of
Albright Deibler. Some records suggest that her sister
Catherine married John Hoffman, Christian's Brother.
There is also some evidence that the Deibler sisters had
two brothers Mathias and Daniel. I suspect that Mathias
may have be named after his Grandfather. One of the brothers may have had a son named Mathias. Do these records
have any of these names?.
