My Austrian grandfather, Ferdinand Herschmann, sailed to Peru around 1885-1890 and settled in Arequipa. Where can I research passenger lists to confirm the date he arrived? (I want to know if he came with my grandmother, Virginia Tutta, or met her in Arequipa when she was visiting her sister, Clotilde Heldt, who had moved there with her photographer husband, a possible relation to Arequipa photographer Carlos Heldt) Are the passenger lists indexed? Are there City Directories in Arequipa for this time period?

Is anyone able to steer me in the direction to find a listing for this ship & passenger list. It departed 11/10/1865 Glasgow to Port Chalmers NZ 6 Jan 1866. I have spent a couple of days visiting all possible NZ shipping links with no luck. The only thing I have is the 1869 debtors list which identifies 2 possible names that I seek Margaret & Williamina Mcdonald but gives no ages/relationship or anything.
ta vic

I'm looking for any Carruthers who came to New Brunswick any time between 1829 and 1834. I found a note that said many Scots came to New Brunswick in 1832 on either the ship "Isabella" or "Dickes". I have searched high and low for a passenger list for either ship and cannot find anything.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

I am trying to obtain sourced/verified information on any of the surnames below - primarily records prior to 1850. I already have most BMD and census records, including photographs of most of the gravesites.

Many thanks
Laurie
I am looking for information on a Williamina (maiden name presently unknown, born about 1888), born in Scotland, who married Elmer Jesse McBain (born Dec. 5, 1882, in Michigan according to Census Records and WWI draft registration). By 1910, Elmer and Williamina lived in Weston, Marshall, South Dakota, and had their first daughter, Gladis (Gladys), so they may have married in either Michigan or South Dakota. They remained in Michigan and had more children (Henry E., Mary H., Robert R., Allen, and Richard Keith, my maternal grandfather). The family later moved to Renton, Washington. Williamina died in the mid-1940s, possibly of a heart attack or stroke and Elmer re-married in 1946.

I am looking for information on my ancestors that come from Paisley Scotland in 1682 on the Caledonia. First, I've seen 2 different spellings. The other spelling is, Caladonia. Can anyone tell me which is correct? Also, I know that William Hoge was on the ship. Did he have a wife with him at the time. He later married Barbara Hume. She was a girl at the time and was on the ship with her parents, (Sir) James Hume b.1639 and his wife Marjorie. I have seen different surnames names for Marjorie (Johnson?) middle name Scott. Is there a birth date for Marjorie. Both Marjorie and James died on the ship. Is there more information as to what the problems were on ship and how they died. Any info would be very helpful.

I believe that Alexander's brother had something to do with the ship too... but I don't know the brother's name yet.

All I know about the ship and Alexander are:

"The ship Bernall was 314 Tons and arrived in Nelson on the 10th of June 1846. Chief Officer was Alexander Mowat."

"Alxander was born at Wick Scotland.
Emigrants to the West Indies/Jamaica

At some point in the 1700's (or earlier), my ancestors left Scotland for Jamaica. Their last name was spelled in several ways: Muschet, Muschett, Mushet. They could have left as early as 1655 as criminals, POW or indentured servants, or between 1745-46 after the failure of the Jacobite Rebellion. Regardless, ships records were not kept during this period, so I am hoping to find some family legend or letters or other kinds of records which could give me a clue as to when they left. It is also possible that they originally meant to go to Canada or the American colonies, and migrated from there to the West Indies. Any clues would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

     Looking for relatives

Helen Whyte Bow entered the United States, date unknown, probably about 1898 to 1901 , later followed by John Fitzgerald. Both Helen and John were from Scotland. They married June 10, Newark, New Jersey, 1901. They later returned to Scotland and lived there until their deaths. Did either have relatives in New Jersey? I do not know which port they sailed from or which port they entered. I have not been able to find either person on ship's lists. Helen (born 1876/77,
John born 1881 according to the 1891 Scotland Census. John listed himself as 25 on the marriage certificate which seems inaccurate .I would be interested in locating any relatives of Helen's or of John's. Helen and John are my grandparents .I can be reached at cprairielily@shaw.ca

I am quite new to researching passenger lists and don't know where to begin with this. My ancestor arrived from Scotland in 1909 and settled in Canada. He was living in Toronto in 1911 and indicated on his census form that he had arrived from Scotland in 1909.

Can anyone please tell me the names of the ports that ships arriving from Scotland commonly used? He may be in Wentworth Co., Ontario, in the 1851 census.

Any help locating when he arrived in Canada would be appreciated.

Searching for Joan Armstrong who emigrated to the USA sometime between 1881 and 1889. Last evidence I have of her is on the 1881 census in Scotland when she was working as a housemaid in a hotel in Edinburgh. I have discovered that she met and married a man from Sweden, Carl Alfred Larsson Ahlqist in America. The information I have states that the marriage took place in Chicago on 16/9/1890, but so far I have been unable to find any evidence of her emigrating to the USA. Can anyone help?

Thank you

I just found (after looking for several years) a record of the arrival in New York of the family of my great great grandfather James Smith. They were aboard the "British Ship Arkwright" captain James Birnie, which sailed from Aberdeen to New York, arriving on 4 May 1835.

I would be interested if anyone knows when the ship left Aberdeen that year?

Peter Smith

Am looking for a McMullen family sailing from Scotland to Nova Scotia, Canada. Would have been 3 or 4 brothers. Eli, Robert and James McMullen (possibly William, also). Information I have is James was born 1758 in Scotland and married 1781 in North Carolina. Family verbal history has them coming to America, via Nova Scotia, but no dates. If anyone has a book of passenger lists, I would appreciate any effort to locate them.
Thanks,
Patsy

Ship's List - Passengers from US to Scotland 1830's - Alex. CAMPBELL

I have some evidence that mt ggg-Grandfather Alex. Campbell returned to Scotland from the US (probably NC) between 1835 and 1841. All the ship's lists I have found only list the passengers coming from the old country. Are there lists showing US passengers returning to Scotland? Any evidence of an Alexander Campbell returning to Scotland?

Dear Scotland's ship's manifest,

Do you have a listening for a Robert, Grace, Mary, Jean McKenzie on a ship's manifest? I believe the ship left Glasgow to N.Y. arriving Dec of 1887 into Castle Garden, N.Y.City?

According to my Aunt Jeanie Gray McKenzie intent to immigrate certificate it states they left Glasgow and arrived in NYC. She was born in Cumbernauld Scotland in 1886 and Aunt Mary would of been born in 1885. My grandparents would of been 32 and 30 years old. on arrival in NYC.

Thank you for any help in this long search. Dorothea

Ship/Snow named Thane of Fife arrived in PA in 1741

My direct male ancestor Adam Kerchner (aka Kirchner or Kircher in some records in PA) arrived on the ship/snow Thane of Fife in 1741. He later settled in the area that is now the border of Lehigh and Berks Co PA. He spoke German and was of the German Reformed faith. He was considered a "Palatine" by the English authorities. But most all germanic immigrants in the 1700's were usually labeled that in colonial PA by the English registrars even if they came from other German areas such as Baden or Wuerttemberg. I have placed online in a webpage the other "freights/passengers" on the same ship which brought my ancestor to PA in 1741. There are also links on the page to more of what I know about Adam Kerchner from colonial Pennsylvania records. See the below link:

Sailing Snow/Ship named the Thane of Fife out of Aberdeen, Scotland Voyage in 1741 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. William Weems, Master Embarked Palatine "passengers/freights" in Amsterdam, Holland.
http://www.kerchner.com/thane-of-fife.htm

Often neighbors or friends traveled together. Anyone who knows the home village of ancestry in Europe of any of the "freight/passengers" on this ship, please contact me. I have only been able to trace about two so far after years of searching. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Charles Kerchner
Emmaus PA
http://www.kerchner.com/kerchner.htm
James Stewart immigrated from Scotland in 1848 or 1849. He was born in St. Andrews on 23Oct1826, and was supposedly educated at Edinburgh in the vocation of nurseryman. He moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he was the first Superintendent of the Elmwood Cemetery, founded in Memphis in 1852. I would appreciate any tips on how to find passenger lists, etc. from Scotland to ports in Canada or New York in 1848 or 1849.

Blacksmith Connection

Quote from Jonathan Paul's site at http://jonathanpaul.org/mccuaig2.htm on Donald McCuaig:

"Many of the older registers, such as this one from Kildalton, are severely damaged and are virtually unreadable...... An example was this (from) a torn smeared fragment at the bottom of one page from 1762 which reads:
...ch 17 Dond M'Cuaig smith in ..... .... two male children in bapt..... .... the other Donal... Translation: March 17, 1762, Donald McCuaig, a BLACKSMITH in Kildalton (Islay), baptized two sons (twins?), Donald and (name unknown)...........From that small written shard, we deduce that the father was a BLACKSMITH in Kildalton on Islay.....We can further deduce Donald's mother was Margaret McArthur from the birth record of a younger brother of Donald's.
"John McCuag and Margaret McArthor in Glenastin had a child baptized called John" This record also gives us a clue to the exact whereabouts of the family. 'Glenastin' may be a variant of the present day Glenegedale, one of the principle villages of Kildalton. We can presume that the family lived in the village where the father operated his BLACKSMITH BUSINESS."

Why is this important to the family?

Because of the "Expelled for Killing the King's Deer" story and the BLACKSMITH connection. This family legend has probably been amplified over the years since, according to Islay researcher Sue Visser, "at the time of their emigration, forced or otherwise, Islay (hence the deer too) was owned by Daniel Campbell of Shawfield, not the King. It is unlikely that they went hunting on the mainland."

Then again the connection between these two stories/accounts may have little, if any, significance to actual family history, but I thought it was interesting enough to pass along to other family researchers.

Agnes Abercrombie with son John to New York

Need passenger information on this ancestor family: James Abercrombie, b 9 Dec 1860, Kilsyth and shows up as 4 months old on the 1861 Census. He probably arrived in the US between 1876 and 1887. He worked as coal miner in New York and then sent for his wife and child, Agnes (Porteous) Abercrombie, b 1 Jul 1860, and small son John, born abt 1876. My dad says the boy was about 4 years old when he and his mom came, but I don't have actual facts on that. I have tried Ellis Island, passenger list lookups and helpful friends. Can someone please find this family for me? I'm stuck! Thanks so much, Thelma

Expelled for Killing the King's Deer

Excerpt from letter from my father, H.Savely McQuagge, to Allene McQuagge Carl dated May 15, 1979:
"All I know about the early McQuagges was related to me by my Father's oldest sister, Annie McQuagge Blue. She says that most of her information came from her father Murdock Gillis McQuagge and his youngest brother Norman Daniel McQuagge (sons of Norman McQuagge of Euchee Valley in Walton County, Florida, himself a son of Duncan McQuagge/McQuaig).....According to Aunt Annie, three McQuagge boys came over from Scotland on a prison ship and landed in the Carolinas....According to Uncle Daniel, they were expelled from Scotland for killing the King's deer. They were gunsmiths by trade and the King's guards would take their guns but that did not stop them as they went home and made more so they were finally expelled and sent on a prison ship to the New World......"

I have been unable to find any ship or immigration record of my family's arrival "to the New World", but I do know that they came to Florida from the Carolinas.

Any assistance would be appreciated very much.

I'm trying to find out about my ggg grandfather, John Macaulay HAMILTON (when and how he and his family arrived in Hamilton, Ontario). I believe there is information in the following database:

Database: Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s

This would be under his name, as entered above.
If anyone with access is willing to take a look, I would appreciate finding what is there. I believe the year of travel was 1848, but I am not sure about the boat, starting place, destination, etc.

Thanks.
